Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

January 20, 2010

The MHW nitrous jacket is more fitted. However, I think the Patagonia Down Sweater is better made and slightly warmer. My nitrous has been leaking feathers all over the place since I got it 2 months ago.

Great fit for skinny people

Mountain Hardwear Nitrous Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Nitrous Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2009

I was looking for a warm insulation layer and narrowed it down to this and the Patagonia Down Sweater. The baffles on the Patagonia seem larger and it seems slightly warmer. But the reasons why I ended up getting the Nitrous were:

1. Fit. I'm 5'11", 145 lbs and this jacket fits much better than the Down sweater. I bought a small and for the same fit on the Patagonia I would need a XS but then the sleeves become too short. The cut is also longer on the Nitrous. However, don't expect to be able to wear more than a baselayer underneath. It'll become too tight. Or buy a size up.

2. More streamlined for layering. I bought this with the intention of wearing it under a shell. The Nitrous isn't as puffy as the Down Sweater and it fits alot nicer underneath my MH Hairpin jacket. With the Down Sweater you can feel it bunch up at the armpits.

3. Features. I ended up getting the Nitrous with the hood, which unfortunately can't be found on BC. It has a convenient chest pocket that the Down sweater does not have. Also compared to the non-hooded nitrous, there are zippers on the handwarmer pockets plus an internal pocket.

How does this compare to the Patagonia Merino Wool baselayers? Is it like a Wool 3 or 4? Or lighter?

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 23, 2009

Thanks for the response. I'm going to use it for outdoor photography -- so not much physical activity to generate heat -- and I want to be cozy in the cold pre dawn, sunset and nighttime hours at between 6,000 to 12,000 feet in the winter. At the same time, I'm sensitive about bulk. The Atom caught my attention because it fits very nicely under my shell and it's supposed to be warmer than primaloft. But will it be cozy enough in 10 degree weather plus wind chill?

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's

November 23, 2009

Love the styling and fit. But warmth wise, how does it compare to the Patagonia Down Sweater or the Nano when worn under a hardshell? I'm planning on using for temperatures between 10 and freezing.

Thanks!
