Great winter trail shoe...

The North Face Ultra 104 GTX XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

The North Face Ultra 104 GTX XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2009

Picked up a pair of these this summer, didn't wear them much since they are a bit hefty for a summer trail runner (more of a light hiking shoe) but figured they would be good for winter. Man am I glad I got these; the snow is finally falling in the Rockies, I finally got to take these out for a spin last week and they are awesome. About 50 miles of cross country ski trail running so far (some of our local XC areas allow foot/snowshoe traffic along side the ski trails) and they are just getting better. Running in near knee deep snow, with an early season crust down deep, these shoes are nice and hefty to protect my feet and ankles, and the Gore keeps my feet nice and dry (with a good set of gaiters). For anyone looking for a warm, solid winter trail running shoe (real winter running, not running on the sidewalk in winter) these are a great choice.

La Sportiva Crosslite Trail Running Shoe - Men's

November 29, 2009

Hey Mark,
I bought a pair of these last spring and wore them all summer on really rough trail, they held up quite well. I'm right in the Canadian Rockies, spent a lot of my summer running mountains that would normally be classified as scrambles, with lots of shale/scree, low angle climbing and easy 5th class, and sometimes quite a few miles to get to and from the scrambles, including stream crossings and lots of bushwacking. I have other pairs of shoes, but found that I always went for my crosslites every time I went for a technical run. They are super grippy, low profile and FAST. They held up better than I expected, considering all the scrambling, half a dozen 12+ hour days, and about 600 miles of rough trail. They still have a bit of life left in them, but I'm definitely ordering a new pair for next spring.

Great shoes, sad to see the company go...

END Stumptown 12oz Trail Running Shoe - Men's

END Stumptown 12oz Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2009

A couple of months ago I popped in to my local discount clearance center looking for cheap winter work boots. I was stunned when I noticed numerous pairs of END shoes on the shelves. Having never seen these in my neck of the woods (Calgary,Alberta), I looked for every pair that would fit. I ended up with 5 pairs in total, 3 pairs of the road shoes and 2 pairs of Stumptowns (10oz. and 12oz.) I have worn the 12oz. Stumptown for 2months of fall trail running now (about 300 miles) and have to say they are awesome. The uppers are very light with little material, when holding the shoe you can practically flatten the whole thing down to the sole. This light upper makes for a really nice fit without any noticeable rub spots. The soles are fairly flexible and grippy, with good padding especially in the forefoot, good if you're a forefoot/midfoot striker. The toebox is quite roomy, actually I found the whole shoe to be quite roomy (not so much wide, but lots of volume height-wise). I have a narrower foot and found that I had to replace the insole with a thicker one, but that solved it for me. So far they are holding up quite well, and I've put lots of treadmill miles on the road models and they are holding up well also. I would definitely recommend any of the END models to anyone looking for a light, fast feeling shoe that fits well. Get them now if you can find them since they won't be around for much longer. Sad to hear that END was phased out by Danner.

CW-X Pro Tight - Women's

November 23, 2009

there are 2 models that are specific to knee support, the Performx and the Stabilyx. The Performx is recommended for activities with linear movement, such as running/biking. The Stabilyx offers a bit more support for side-to-side motion. I guess it comes down to your primary use. Hope this helps.
