Terrible First Run

Brunton Vapor All-Fuel Stove

Brunton Vapor All-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 1 August 22, 2011

Even after reading a number of negative reviews about the Vapor, I decided to give it a try since I like the ability to easily switch between butane and liquid fuels.

The first time out, I was able to burn about 0.3 liters of white gas well before the stove cut out. At first, I thought I might have just lost pressure from the fuel bottle. However, after pumping and trying to re-light, I got very spotty performance from the stove, where it burned for a minute and then went out. Next, I thought that, perhaps, the jet had clogged (which would be surprising after just 0.3 liters of white gas), so I decided to clean it with the provided tool. Even after taking the stove apart to remove the jet to make sure that I was cleaning it properly, the stove failed to operate.

After all this, and a meal of very al dente pasta, I came to the conclusion that the fuel line itself must have clogged. Normally, I'd disassemble that as well to try to clean it out. However, given this is a brand new stove, and I was burning a pretty clean fuel, I've decided to send it back and shell out a bit more for something that's more reliable and favorably reviewed.

Its possible that I got a dud, and I'll admit that for the time the stove worked I was quite happy with it. The simmer control is excellent and it boiled a liter of water for me in around 5 minutes. However, cutting out completely on its first outing is, for me, unacceptable and left me with a cold dinner. I'm just glad this happened on an overnight rather than a more substantial trip.
