Never even used my rain pants

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Softshell Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2010

I was very pleasantly surprised with these pants. I took them on a 34 day NOLS Patagonia mountaineering course as my primary trekking pant. I brought along a pair of Marmot Precip rain pants to wear over them in case it started raining really hard, but I never even had to take them out. It ended up raining or snowing 29 of the 34 days I was in the field, and I remained dry throughout. The waterproof side zippers worked great, and the conduit material kept all water out even though they were softshells. I never expected these to be completely waterproof, but they functioned equally well as rain pants ans they did climbing pants. They were also extremely durable, holding up to bushwhacking, rock scrambling, and falling on ice. I did split the crotch seam somehow, but it was easily sewed back up.

For the price these pants are awesome: waterproof, durable, and comfortable.

Proven in the Patagonian Andes

Arc'teryx Theta AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 13, 2010

Just got back from a 34 day NOLS Patagonia mountaineering course with this jacket. It rained or snowed 29 of the 34 days we were out, and my layers underneath stayed dry throughout several storms and blizzards. The DWR coating wore off after a few days of constant rain, and the water stopped beading up, but I continued to stay dry. The fit was great and allowed room to fit over all my layers, and the drawcords and cut ensured that it would not be too loose without a helmet or layering.

The shell survived severe bushwhacking and falls onto mud, rock, and ice.The arms and shoulders are made of a more durable fabric than the chest and back, which helps protect against abrasion and tearing. The only downside is that the fabric on the chest seemed pretty vulnerable to friction wear. After being roped up for one day, one of the locking carabiners that attached me to the rope wore a few small holes through the front of the jacket. The inner liner seemed to delaminate where it contacted the carabiner, and then the gore-tex and outer layer were compromised. However, the holes were easily patched, and I avoided more problems by lifting the jacket above the harness in the front. I don't think Arc'teryx's warranty would cover something like that.

Overall, this is the best jacket I have ever owned. The quality of materials and attention to detail make sure you will stay dry even through the roughest conditions as I found out. The pockets gave me plenty of room for gear and the drawcords always kept everything snug. Highly recommended!

Is this helmet compatible with the tuneups speakers? I know there is a audio version but I was wondering if the earpads have pockets for headphones

Line Prophet 100 Ski

December 3, 2009

well the local mountains here in so.cal don't really get much powder, and I doubt I would use the Lines for that. Next year I am moving north for school and will mainly be skiing Tahoe or other similar areas. I don't do too much trees yet, and when I turn tight and fast, it is on groomers since my current skis don't even handle pow. I'm starting to lean for the 179s. Thanks for your help.

Line Prophet 100 Ski

December 3, 2009

I'm 5'6 140 lbs and a level 7-8 skier. I am looking for a pair of all mountain skis to supplement a pair of 160 cm 68mm carvers that are really only good on groomers.
I'm trying to decide between the prophet 90 and 100. I know the 100 is better for pow, but I'll probably be going 50/50 pow on average, and only bring out the carvers for pure groomer days. I'm not sure if I should go with the 90 or 100, and what length. I was thinking 172 or 179 for the 90, or 172 for the 100. Help would be greatly appreciated!

Marmot Exum Jacket - Men's

November 10, 2009

I'm 5'6, about 140lbs and wondering what size to get. I need this to fit over 3 layers including fleece, zip-t, shirt/baselayer without being too tight. I was leaning towards the medium. Do they run big at all?

The North Face Pumori Fleece Jacket - Men's

November 10, 2009

I'm taking a trip to patagonia soon and need a mid or expedition weight fleece that can be layered. I'm a bit over 5'6 about 140 lbs and was looking at either this or the Khumbu fleece. I am leaning towards the Pumori, but it needs to fit over 2 layers (zip-T and lighter baselayer) and under a Marmot hard shell. My sizing says I should be on the small end of medium, but do these run big?
