Not a backcountry skiing jacket

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 6, 2009

I agree with Ben. I have the 2 year old version, found it on clearance for $79. For the price it's a great jacket. I'm 6'0" 180Ibs 43 chest and have the XL. The jacket is really tight in the arms and shoulders while being huge in the belly. My biggest gripe about the jacket is the breathability, or lack thereof. Even in moderate cardio I get soaked. The former would be tolerable if the jacket kept you warm, but it doesn't. There is only room for a light base layer. If I was looking for a backcountry skiing jacket I’d look for something with pit zips and a hood. On the plus side the jacket has been relegated to bonfire and bar duty where it has preformed incredibly well, and still looks brand new after 2 years of shenanigans, MHW quality is second to none.

Resort Skiers need only apply

Black Diamond O2 Telemark Binding

Black Diamond O2 Telemark Binding

Rating for this product: 4 November 6, 2009

These are my favorite resort bindings; I've skied on the R8s, HH, and Targas previously. You can't beat the power and the smooth flex. The mid stiff cartridge is more than enough for the average knee dropper. If you want serious power, step up to the rid stiff cartridges. I'm currently running rid stiffs on my BD Machines and K2 Piste Pipes and wouldn't consider switching to a different binding. The only reason I gave them only 4 stars is because they are resort specific. I made the mistake of skinning with them and it will never happen again. If you are going to be doing any serious back country skiing do yourself a favor and spend a little more for the BD 01 bindings. Also, if you’re flying to a ski destination the cartridges have a nasty habit of loosening up on the flight.

Killer boots

Black Diamond Push Telemark Ski Boot - Men's

Black Diamond Push Telemark Ski Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2009

These boots are great. They’re a definite improvement over my old Garmont Synr G fits, much smoother bellows and a stiffer cuff. They can drive big skis and still tour nicely. I have to disagree with Noah, I have not had any cold feet in these boots, except for waiting to drop into sick lines in AK. I patrol in Mn and am outside 4 plus hours at a time in -10 F temperatures and have never had cold toes or used foot warmers.
