Asolo TPS 520
Asolo TPS 520 GV Boot - Men's
May 26, 2011
These boots rock. They fit like a glove after being broken in, but they feel great right out of the box in the first place. These really are the cadillac of backpacking boots. High quality leather, vibram sole, gore-tex insert, plus they look good. Can't beat that.

Great lightweight tent
The North Face Tadpole 23 Bx Tent: 2-Person 3-Season
May 25, 2011
Pretty much like everyone else is saying.... I love mine. Not the most bomber tent out there to be sure but a great lightweight tent for most applications.

Black Diamond Sabretooth Clip Crampons
April 6, 2011
These are semi-automatic crampons (no toe welt step in) as opposed to the "automatic" sabretooth pro step in. Automatic crampons work only with boots that have full heel and toe welts and as a result have less play and are more rigid. If you buy a mountaineering boot with full heel and toe welts, like the Scarpa Mont Blanc or the La Sportiva Nepal EVO, you'll have more options. The La Sportiva Trangos have no toe welts but are still great boots by all accounts. I think its really a matter of personal preference. If you are looking to do very steep, technical routes, you may want to lean in the direction of boots with both heel and toe welts along with fully automatic crampons. Otherwise, for most cascade peak summer climbs for example, i think the La sportiva Trango and some semi-auto crampons would be just fine.

Black Diamond Sabretooth Clip Crampons
April 6, 2011
Its kind of hard to say from the single photo but I would not count on it. I would just go for something like the BD contact strap crampons for that boot...

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Jacket - Men's
April 6, 2011
This is more of an athletic fit than the jackets Arcteryx makes for snowsports specifically, so you will not necessarily enjoy the same range of motion. Also, there is no powder-skirt. That being said, I snowboard in my Alpha SL Pullover sometimes, it does just fine with my R1 underneath.

Marmot Limelight 2-Person Tent w/ Footprint and Gear Loft
September 17, 2010
This is a pretty lightweight backpacking/camping tent, and it has a nice fly with a vestibule but its not necessarily a bomb-proof 4 season. That being said, I think what needs to be considered in cold weather is more the sleeping bag than the tent. A nice 15 degree down bag like a Marmot Sawtooth should keep you toasty in any tent, provided you bring a sleeping pad and the right clothing. This tent has a lot of ventilation without the fly on but its a nice tent either way and if you have all the aforementioned bases covered, this isn't a bad way to go.

Stohlquist Brik Personal Flotation Device
September 17, 2010
The impression I get is that touring PFDs are built for all day comfort, whereas whitewater PFDs, while maintaining relative comfort, are also focused much more on mobility and safety, meaning extra features that ensure the vest wont ride up, extra wide arm holes, etc. That being said, I don't see why this particular PFD wouldn't work for touring. I would take a whitewater specific PFD touring, but I might not take a touring specific PFD to the creek...

Mammut Laser Softshell Jacket - Men's
March 16, 2010
Anybody have any information that would render the Arc'teryx Venta SV jacket inferior to the Laser? or the other way around? Thanks.

Arc'teryx Alpha SL Pullover Jacket - Men's
February 10, 2010
I have used this jacket during the rainy season in Costa Rica where it is also very hot and very wet and I can stand behind it fully as a product. Given your size, i would probably go with the medium. I am 6'2 and 210 and i wear an XL. The L also fit but i like a little room for layering and just moving around. The full side zip will help you with pulling it on quickly and the pac-lite will keep you dry. As for the pants, I would look at just the Alpha SL pant from Arc'teryx. Also made of a pac-lite shell, the Alpha SL pants have ankle zippers and an elastic waist band that will make it very easy to pull them on over boots in a hurry. Together, both Alpha SL pieces make a very lightweight and breathable outfit that will keep you dry and happy.

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's
February 9, 2010
If a Med. Sidewinder fit length-wise then that is probably what i would try in this jacket. It is an athletic fit jacket.
For california? I believe that an LT would be more than enough. LT in the Arc naming scheme stands for Lightweight, whereas the SV stands for severe weather. An LT is generally a 3-layer gore-tex shell as opposed to the pro shell, although there are some pro shell LT jackets. I use an Alpha SL (super lightweight) pullover which is the pac-lite shell that has taken pretty much any abuse i can dish out.

Mad Rock Flash Climbing Shoe - Men's- 2009 DO NOT USE
February 6, 2010
If you want a good, all day fit, i would just order your normal size. If you are looking for more of a performance edge, maybe go .5 a size down. They are climbing shoes, so they will stretch, but they'll still be tight.

Arc'teryx Atom LT Hooded Insulated Jacket - Men's
February 2, 2010
I found that this jacket runs pretty true to size. I have two other Arcteryx jackets, both in XL, and they are a little on the baggy side, but the Atom LT fits pretty much perfect for me in XL.

Salomon XT Wings Trail Running Shoe - Men's
January 22, 2010
Joel, i would look at these Salomons for sure. IT has been my experience that they are a great all around shoe, for trail running or otherwise. I have actually tried some North Face trail running shoes and i didnt like the way the heel fit or the lacing system. Obviously you could feel differently, but i recommend these without a doubt.
