Mammut Mt. Peak LTH Boot - Men's

April 20, 2011

In China, but the quality of these boots is still fantastic. I was very impressed with the quality of the interior and exterior leather and the stiching. Too bad they don't fit me.

Mammut Mt. Crest GTX Boot - Men's

February 2, 2010

Personally I found the GTX version to be a slightly smaller than the LTH version. With a mid-weight sock I went up half a size.

Scarpa SL M3 Backpacking Boot - Men's

January 31, 2010

Yes. These are substantial boots that can even accept crampons temporarily, one step below mountaineering boots.

Scarpa SL M3 Backpacking Boot - Men's

I find these boots the worst for making my feet sweat - with leather this thick, there is no more breathability than gore-tex.

According to the person at the chat desk, the Karakorum is more stiff than the glacier.

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Blue Insole

January 26, 2010

A good reply from Steve. I would add that the blue fit pretty narrow, particularily in the forefoot. For wider feet I'd go up a size category if your son's size is at the upper limit for the category. For example, I am a size 10.5, and find I'd need the F, not the E.

No, they are not. They are highly water resistant, provided you maintain the leather.

Try the Glacier EVO - it is a little taller.

La Sportiva Glacier EVO Mountaineering Boot - Men's

January 25, 2010

You shouldn't feel anything on top of your toes. Try sizing up, but they may be too low volume for your feet.

La Sportiva Karakorum Mountaineering Boot - Men's

January 25, 2010

No - dry-fast refers to the inner wicking material. Unless it has a gore-tex lining, it isn't waterproof. This boot is probably best described as highly-water resistant.

Mammut Mt. Crest Leather Backpacking Boot - Men's

November 4, 2009

Like all non-goretex boots, they will eventually wet out in wet conditions. Once wet, they will take a long time to dry unfortunately. But if treated properly, they should be fairly waterproof for a few days on wet trail.

Lowa Banff Pro Backpacking Boot - Men's

November 4, 2009

Very different in terms of fit. Lowas have a wide heel and a more narrow forefoot - they tend to fit more rectangular. Scarpa SL M3s have a narrower heel and mid-foot fit with more arch support, and a wider toe box comparatively (but still not particualrly wide, even in the wide size). The scarpas are much stiffer, and the leather thicker.

Vasque Summit GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

November 4, 2009

Depends - get your foot measured properly. If you are between a 10.5 and an 11, get the 11.

Review Title

Vasque Summit GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Vasque Summit GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 4, 2009

These are decent quality boots, with many great characteristics but some small but significant problems. The leather is of good quality, and should last a long time. These need a toe-cap, should be mandatory on these types of boots. These are poorly padded, and the edges of the tongue cut into my ankle bones even through thick socks. These provide good ankle support, but a lack of articulated cuff means they take a long time to break the ankle portion in, and rely upon the upper to flex in areas that are not ideal. They are not that heavy, and yet filter out stones and other underfoot objects very well. Excellent cushioning in the midsole, best I've ever felt in a mid to heavy weight backpacking boot. Heel cup not quite deep enough to cup heel well enough, too stiff, and the heel is a little wide too (less than Lowas), this may be problematic for some. It killed my heels after very short walks - it was almost as though the boot was pushing into the backs of my heels, something that would definitely become painful over longer walks and a deal-breaker for me. A higher volume fit, seem to fit a little longer and wider than true size - the medium fits like an EE compared to many other brands, and leaves lots of toe room. Order your street shoe size - I have a wider, low to medium volume foot, and and measure a 10.5. I ordered an 11 as I find I often need to go a 1/2 size up to accomodate thicker socks and insoles. A mistake, as they were a bit too long - about 2 thick fingers fit behind my ankle when my foot was jammed to the front - and a bit too much volume, even when wearing a good mid-weight and a liner sock while using superfeet orange insoles. Poor arch support, use aftermarket footbed if you need arch support. Overall i'd give them 3/5, and would recommend to Vasque that improvements would include a better heel cup with padding above to lock the heel without too much pressure from the instep, and a slightly lower volume upper in the medium width - that's why there is a wide fit!

These are decent quality boots, with many great characteristics. They are well padded, and provide reasonable ankle support. They are not that heavy, and yet filter out stones and other underfoot objects well. Love the toe-cap, should be on the Vasque Summit too. Heel cup JUST deep enough to hold heel well enough, however the heel is a little wide too (less than Lowas), may be problematic for some. A higher volume fit, seem to fit a little longer and wider than true size - the medium fits like an EE compared to many other brands, and leaves lots of toe room. Overall i'd give them 3.5/5, and would recommend to Vasque that improvements would include a slightly lower volume upper in the medium width - that's why there is a wide fit!
