Great for climbing and XC skiing, kinda tight

Marmot Rockstar Softshell Pant - Men's

Marmot Rockstar Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 18, 2011

I think these pants are awesome. The material is thin, so these aren't for riding or winter climbing. I love them for cool weather spring/fall rock climbing and hiking, and for active winter sports like snowshoeing or XC skiing over a midweight baselayer bottom.

These do have a very athletic fit. They aren't the kind of pants you'll wear around in town, but they are really stretchy, comfortable, and offer great freedom of movement. I should mention that there isn't any stretch in the waistband. I usually wear a 32 waist and the mediums fit me well, but there isn't any extra room.

One other note: these do not handle thorn bushes well at all.

Black Diamond Bod Harness

December 18, 2011

Yes, you're doing it right. The tech spec on the BD website shows how to tie in with this harness. You just need to pass the rope through waist belt and the little loop and the lower portion.

Black Diamond Mission 75 Backpack - 4455-4699cu in

December 4, 2011

When I got my Sphynx I couldn't figure out how to attach the crampon straps either, and the attachments on the mission 75 look the same. Were there a couple weird extra straps that came with the pack? I can't find the website I remember, but this link shows a picture of how the sphynx straps attach. You have to un-thread the straps, pass them through the D-rings, then re-thread the buckles and the clips.

SealLine Widemouth Duffle Bag

January 25, 2010

I'm looking for a duffel to strap on top of my car for road trips. Something relatively waterproof so I don't have to worry about my gear getting wet if I drive through a rainstorm. I don't want a roll-top dry bag, but rather a zipper type duffel. Something like the North Face Base Camp duffel but with a good water resistant zipper. Anyone have any suggestions?

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

January 7, 2010

This might be a little late, but for anyone else who has the same question: For an all-around coat I would look at a 3-in-1 jacket, with a waterproof shell and a fleece liner that zips inside it, either of which can be worn separately. If you don't have a winter coat, this would offer the most versatility. It won't be quite as warm as a down jacket, but if a 3-in-1 can get me through South Dakota winters I'm sure it can handle New Hampshire.

Everyday Go-To Jacket

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2010

I love this jacket. My Denali is the jacket I grab every time I'm going out the door, either to class or running around town, or out on a winter hike. I don't know why everyone seems to have a problem with it, I find it warm enough. I wear this with a baselayer shoveling snow in single-digit temps and on cold-weather hikes and campouts. True, it doesn't block the wind very much, but it does breath well when you're working hard, especially with the pit zips. It's perfect for low winds, and in stronger winds I just throw a rain shell over it whenever I stop moving. I got mine about four years ago, and it's holding up great to almost daily use throughout the spring, fall, and winter. I recommend it hands down.

Black Diamond Pursuit Glove

November 5, 2009

Are these gloves suitable for rappelling or belaying? I picked up a pair of BD gloves that are apparently discontinued because I can't find them anywhere online, but they look very similar to these. I was going to use them for ice climbing and I'm concerned that the synthetic material on either side of the leather palm might melt while rappelling or lowering.
