Nicholas Skog's Beginner Climbing Gear
Created January 5, 2010
So in this list I have put a few items which are pretty much the bare essentials for beginner rock climbers. There are a few options for you to choose from (a lower price and higher price). The basics are a harness, belay device and carabinear, and chalk bag. The only thing not included is chalk.
The differences here are Petzl Verso v Reverso 3. I use the reverso because if you ever multipitch you can belay a second. That is the only difference between the two.
The differences in chalk bags are mostly preference. The Arcteryx has a nice large opening, is big and has a zipper pocket in the back. Metolius looks comparable but a little smaller, and has no pocket.

Stoic Wraith Shell - Men's

Does anyone have experience with how this jacket holds up while rock climbing? How does it compair to something like the Patagonia Houdini? Would it get ripped to shreds? Does it not block wind as well? Thanks!

Black Diamond Alpine Bod Harness
March 6, 2011
For this harness there is no "belay loop". The idea is to take a locking carabiner and put it on the waist belt and the loop that comes up from in between your legs. This carabiner keeps the leg loops closed as well as serves as your belay loop.

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's
November 11, 2010
I know this is not the most "packable jacket" but can anyone give me an idea how packable it is? I am a rock climber and backpacker who is getting into mountaineering and ice climbing. I want something tough but I am wondering if this is the wrong choice to bring on a backpacking/climbing trip year round?

MSR Asgard Tent 2-Person 4-Season

Does anybody know if you have the option of not using the vestibule on one side to save foot print space? I.E. not exteding the rain fly on one side/ both sides?

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

Couldn't tell you exactly but I would say patagonia's stuff runs a little bit bigger than Stoic gear (maybe b/c stoic stuff is mostly athletic fit). Hope this helps!

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's
February 25, 2010
I am about 5'7" and 145 lbs (athletic build) and a medium fits well enough for me to layer plenty underneath. It is hard to say if a medium will be right for you because of 2 characteristics of the jacket. 1st: the over all length of the jacket is short (only comes about 2 inches bellow my belt). For me it is ok because of the 2nd important characteristic of the jacket: the sleeves are very long so if I reach my hands up into the air the length of the sleeves allow me to do so without pulling the jacket above my waste. In fact the sleeves are so long that they come down to the tip of my middle finger (I don't mind considering all you need to do to hold them back is tighten the straps). Also take into consideration that this is an athletic fit jacket. If you are an athletic or skinny build and don't have a particularly long torso (<18") I think a medium would fit you fine (I would lean towards this if I were you). If you have a little more meat around the midsection and/or have a longer torso (19"+) go for a large. Hope this helps!

La Sportiva Solution Climbing Shoe - Discontinued Rubber
February 25, 2010
I would down size about a full size from your street shoe/comfortable trad climbing shoe. When I bought mine I got a 40.5 even though a 41 felt fine and I wear a 41.5 in Scarpa technos. I am glad I did otherwise by now they would have stretched to the point where they would fall off while doing heal hooks. I know my foot isn't quiet as small but I hope this helps!

Stoic Welder Insulated Softshell Jacket - Men's
February 25, 2010
You will have no problem with the neck on this jacket. It is plenty wide and gives you plenty of space for comfort. As you can see in the pictures the neck is pretty much as wide as the hood so the fit will be a lot different than the Patagonia Powder Bowl. I highly recommend you get this jacket and see for yourself why I and everyone else who actually received it raved about it!

Sea To Summit Pocket Shower
February 21, 2010
Yep, since it is made from the same material as dry bags and seals just like one, this product can be used as a dry bag. I am not sure though if I would feel comfortable throwing it in a river or doing something that extreme with it, but for anything up to and including heavy rains it would work well.

Seirus All Weather Glove - Men's
January 17, 2010
I believe you are not supposed to machine wash them. You might be able to machine wash them but I don't know what that would do to the water/wind proofing. I would say spot washing (wiping them down with a damp cloth) would be the only way to go. hope this helps

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's
December 17, 2009
I am looking for a hight performance rain jacket that will do well in the rainy season in SE Asia (really hot). From what I see this looks pretty good but I am wondering does this jacked have a pocket that it folds into or can it be stuffed down into a small size to fit in my day bag? Thanks for your help!
