Nordica Jah Love Alpine Ski

Nordica Jah Love Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 4 November 28, 2010

Bought these and mounted them up for Big Sky's opening last week. I put a pair of older Salomon bindings on them and paid 50 bucks for Salomons 140 mm brake. The shop guy mounted them traditionally which I wasn't really pleased with at first, however after riding them I think traditional may be the way to go. I skied everything from fresh groomers to maybe 2.5 feet of fresh snow and the skis never disappointed. These skis literally ride on the top 5 inches or so of snow, and allow you to cruise instead of sink. They are also very poppy making the park also pretty fun with the Jahs. My one complaint is the weight, after the powders tracked out later in the day the weight of these things is exhausting. Overall great resort ski for those one foot plus days.

Mountain Khakis Original Mountain Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 13, 2010

Although the mountain khakis seem like durable pants, you just cant beat a pair of carharts. Personally I thought the mt khakis fit a little weird, and seemed to ride up a bit high. The mountain khakis seem a little more worn in than carharts at first, but carharts take some time to break in.

2 Year Update

V.I.O. POV 1.5 Camera

V.I.O. POV 1.5 Camera

Rating for this product: 3 November 11, 2010

I already reviewed the cam a couple months after I got, and gave it top notches. However after two years and the explosion of options in the POV market, I'm a bit disappointed. Yes the VIO is rock solid and take multiple beatings, however because of the price and video quality I think there are better options. I do love the low profile of the lens compared to the GoPros "look at me slay this rail" size. Unless the price drops a couple hundred, and it has HD video I dont think I would recommended the VIO.

Clifbar Clif Shot Energy Gel - 24 Pack

Clifbar Clif Shot Energy Gel - 24 Pack

Rating for this product: 3 November 11, 2010

Obviously clif bars and such are not made to taste like a delicious desert, however I thought the chocolate flavor was uneatable. The chocolate tasted a bit like browny batter, only disgusting. I can't pinpoint exactly what is was but I felt like I was going to puke. Maybe a fruit flavor would be a little better. I think I'm going to just stick to the Clif Bars.

Helly Hansen Multi Bottom - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 11, 2010

I'm a guy, but I couldn't pass up the deal on steep and cheap and said why not. There is no hole for peeing, and the foot holes are tiny, but besides that I think they work great for a guy. Ive used these skiing and touring as well as some cold nights in the back of my truck. Although they are thin, I think that there very warm. Maybe on not "Everest" warm, but def skiing in Montana warm...

FLIMSY

Smith Serpico Sunglasses - Polarized

Smith Serpico Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 2 November 11, 2010

I love smith products and have rarely had problems with anything, however the Serpicos are below the norm of Smith quality. I'm on my second pair of these, and will soon be sending them back to Smith for warranty. The fit pretty good and look sweet however they fall apart. The metal on them is so pliable that regular use will bend the metal a bit. This results in the plastic lenses popping out of their frames. On both of my pairs this has happened, I think the metal is just too weak for a pair of sunglasses. I guess if these were only going to be used for driving, and stored in a hard case they might be fine. I would pass on the Serpicos for some other Smiths or some Ray Bans.

CRKT Elishewitz Anubis Knife

CRKT Elishewitz Anubis Knife

Rating for this product: 4 November 11, 2010

When I took this out of the box I thought I had received the wrong item. The knife is plain heavy, however as soon as you start using it you will realize the advantages. The blade is "cut yourself" sharp, I know this because it has happened numerous times. The weight of the knife allows for good control, as well as a solid grip. It really does "fit" in your hand quite well. I have left this knife at home for backpacking trips because of its weight, however for everything else this is a perfect knife.

Perfect for Me

Scarpa Hurricane Alpine Touring Boot

Scarpa Hurricane Alpine Touring Boot

Rating for this product: 5 November 11, 2010

Not sure about the other review where the guy says that these are not an alpine touring boot. These are my first "alpine touring" boot, I switched from a pair of Salomons. First these are incredibly light compared to regular alpine boots, probably about half the weight of my Salomons. As soon as I began touring with these I noticed the lightness of the boot allowing me to go a bit farther will less effort. Secondly with the intuition liners I think these are incredibly comfortable. The stiffness of the boot feels perfect, and very similar to an alpine advanced boot(not a race boot). Stiff enough to power through crud, but forgiving enough to come up short on a table. I plan to ride a bit of park with these too, and so far I think with the weight and the stiffness they will be perfect. The last thing I love is the Vibram sole. Again coming from worn down alpine boots it's definitely a huge improvement. I would recommended these to my friends.

Hestra Seth Morrison Pro Glove

Hestra Seth Morrison Pro Glove

Rating for this product: 5 July 4, 2010

Wow, thats all I can say. I ripped up another pair of Hestras and they were super cool and sent me these. Def super warm, and very comfy. I almost feel like Seth when I wear these, except for all the front flips. My one grip is they are def too warm for hot spring days. However they are perfect for 90% of the time at Big Sky. Seth you are the master, and after these I would likely buy anything with your name on em.

They definitely fog up a lot easier than most helmets, because your breath gets pushed back up. I use to bring two pairs of goggles, but I recently bought the Smith Phenom Turbos(the little electric fan) That seems to solve the fogging issue.

Smith Holt Helmet

Smith Holt Helmet

Rating for this product: 3 July 3, 2010

I love Smith for a variety of reasons, but I am not a big fan of the holt. It def fits well, and once protected my brain from a hard impact with a metal rail(that thing came out of nowhere). However unless I'm wearing a neck gaiter, I look like a giant dick. I mean a literal penis. So it doesn't exactly suite me well, but I'm guessing others may look less dick like with this on. I think I would enjoy the maze a bit more. It depends on how your head is shaped.

Smith Phenom Turbo Fan Goggle

Smith Phenom Turbo Fan Goggle

Rating for this product: 4 July 3, 2010

Bought these on Tramdock, because I always wanted the fan option. Before I had these I always skied with two pairs of goggles, but now I'm a one goggle skier. I've noticed I rarely need the fan, because they vent so darn well. When they do start to get a little fogged hiking I turn on the fan, and boom there fog free. I think they vent better than other Smiths because the fan even when not on increases air flow. Very comfy, pretty durable. I did have a mishap after a hard landing where I noticed the little wire from the battery pack was a little pulled off. One other thing, when sitting in a backpack they occasionally turned themselves on. Overall another great product from Smith.

3 Season Update

Rossignol S5 Jago Ski

Rossignol S5 Jago Ski

Rating for this product: 4 July 3, 2010

I know this years model may be a little different than the Scratchs I have, but I figure I would let everyone know what durable skis these are. I originally bought em as an all mountian ski, but they transitioned to my park ski after the first season( I like something a bit fatter for everyday riding) Riding the mass of rocks that is known as Big Sky Montana most of my skis get upwards of five core shots a season. This season I received a gnarly 3 inch core shot right along the edge. I was about to go to Jackson so I didn't get it base welded right away. Well sure enough one day in Jackson the edge broke. It bent out a bit, but still rode fine. The in Utah I looked down to see 4 inches of the edge sticking out from the ski. I twisted it off, and kept skiing. Despite missing the edge they still do alright in the park, and I enjoy the feeling of plastic on a metal rail. So to wrap this up these skis are versatile, and a great all around park oriented ski.

Marker Loyalist Now

Marker Jester 16 Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 5 July 3, 2010

I used to buy Salomon bindings, then switched to rossignol. I bought the original jesters(all white, and have rode them for three years with almost no issues. The one issue I had is the little plastic plate that covers the DIN setting popped off, but not really a big deal. Changing the DIN is sanp on these especially compared to Rossis. I used to have the DIN at 15 at the end of last season, until a cornice jump mishap left with a badly sprained ankle. With a DIN that high it was def my own fault( a 15 DIN probably isnt ideal for hitting jumps). Now I keep at 12 or 13 and have never had any pre-release issues. One of the things I love about them is the easiness of clicking in. Despite snow, or slope angle they always seem pretty easy to get into, unlike Rossis. I love them and will most likley be riding Markers for a long time to come

Great All Around Pack

DAKINE Poacher Backpack - 2300cu in

DAKINE Poacher Backpack - 2300cu in

Rating for this product: 3 January 27, 2010

I've been using the pack for about a month or so now and have really grown to appreciate it. I first brought it to Mexico for a five day trip. I was able to fit everything I need in here and still carry it on. Since then I have used it for back country once, and resort skiing a couple times. I hate carrying this big of a pack skiing but for carrying my camera it works great. It's comfy to wear and super adjustable, and seems solid. My major grip is this though, DAKINES NEW CABLE SKI CARRY SYSTEM BLOWS. I have the same system on my other pack and its terrible. When you put fat skis in it pulls the entire top of the pack down because the cable system is attached to the top of the pack. Why Dakine? The old loop worked way better than this. Besides this the packs cool

Big Step Up from Trekkers

Marker Baron 12 Ski Binding

Marker Baron 12 Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 4 January 14, 2010

Sold the day wreckers and bought these this fall. I was a bit worried at first about the durability of these mainly because the ski I was mounting these on would see some park skiing when the snow wasn't around. Anyways I've been riding these for about a month with a good mix of back country, powder, and park. They are definitely great all around performers. My only grip about them would be that if you let them get very cold for sometime while locked in alpine mood it can be extremely difficult to switch them into tour mode since they are frozen. It wasn't a big issue when it happened to me since I was at a car with a heater, but I could see it being more difficult in the backcountry. Anyways great bindings, glad I went with these and saved the weight.

Hestra Cloud Nine Glove

Rating for this product: 5 November 29, 2009

Bought these on S&C, and absolutely love them. Wore them for the first three days of Big Skys season, it got pretty cold too with the wind. These are hands down the nicest and warmest gloves I have ever owned, it like the Porsche of gloves. The leather is super soft and so is the inside of the glove, and they look dope.

UPDATE: Glove were great but they ripped at the seams after about 50 days. Hestra was cool and sent me another pair.

Rating for this product: 5 October 9, 2009

Very nice shades, best ive ever owned. The interlock is nice but i find i don't really use it, i could seeing it being nice if you messed up a lens. They fit really well, and don't move around much. I have noticed that they fog up a little easier than others, but nothing too bad. I was wearing these skate boarding and got hit by a car leaving a cut from where the glasses were, however i think they took some impact. During the crash part of the earpiece broke, but smith was chill to warranty it. Very solid shades from a very solid company

Saftey First

Giro Remedy S Comp Helmet

Giro Remedy S Comp Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 October 9, 2009

Alright i was sick of hurting my face skiing, so i bought this helmet. People may say things to you about it, but tell them to fuck off. If you think your going to be landing on your face or having your knees hit you in the face on a somewhat regular basis then buy the helmet. Its pretty comfy, and surprisingly warm. One bummer is that if you take a good fall in powder sometimes snow will become trapped right around your face, and it makes you feel like your suffocating, but its all right. The other bummer is the visor(you have to have the visor otherwise you look silly)breaks quite a bit and their usually $15, I broke mine three times in two seasons. Great helmet for saftey, and it looks funny when you blow smoke out of it.

V.I.O. POV.1 Camera Package

V.I.O. POV.1 Camera Package

Rating for this product: 4 October 9, 2009

Bought this last fall on a steep discount. I used about 20 solid days of skiing Big Sky last year. Overall Ive been really pleased with it. Its incredibly durable, im never worried about it getting wet. Its easy to use, the buttons take some force so you don't accidentally turn it off. I think the image quality is pretty good as well. However I would only recommend this if your going to give the camera abuse, otherwise you could probably get something cheaper. The one downside is that you have to buy the extra mounting kit from vio if you want the options, the basic mounts arent enough. Here's a link to a video I filmed last season with the vio http://newschoolers.com/web/content/viewvideo/id/272613/member_id/126918/
