Darn Tough Merino Wool Micro Crew Cushion Hiking Sock

Darn Tough Merino Wool Micro Crew Cushion Hiking Sock

Rating for this product: 4 November 17, 2009

I was a long-time wool socks with poly-pro liners hiker. Until SmartWool, which, for me was a sock revolution. I saw these while browsing for Smartwool, and decided to give them a shot.
Yeah, I like them. If I'd never had Smartwool, I'd probably marry these socks. But I guess I'm already married to SW--which I still chose over these.

Compared to SW, they seem scratchier. I certainly haven't worn them enough to tell you about longeveity.
I do have a suspicion that these socks will hold up better, though.

My little love lamp

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Black Diamond Spot Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 November 17, 2009

The main reason I bought this headlamp was to be able to find my horse out in a huge pasture at night. I wasn't sure if this little headlamp would get it done, but it has.

This is the brightest headlamp I've ever had. The beam on the main bulb is wide, and long. I am able to get a much broader picture of my surroundings than "ok, is there a tree in front of me?"

My complaint is that the button on top is very firm, and it takes quite a bit of effort to squish it down. Maybe it will loosen as I use it more.

Another concern is this: while backpacking with a friend, we discovered we both had Spot headlamps. His gave off about as much light as holding a candle in front of you would. He has had his 2 years...
I don't know what they claim the longevity of this headlamp is, but that kind of shocked me.

All in all, I am very happy I chose this over the Tekka (which I have and use daily at wotk) for my personal use. I hope it lasts forever!

I love this jacket--but I don't snowboard

Special Blend Fluff Down Jacket - Women's

Special Blend Fluff Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 October 16, 2009

First off- I don't ski or snowboard, so I can't give you an opinion about that. Second, I haven't really tried it out in the elements--so this review is just about size, color and quality, and potential issues.
I purchased it because I work outside, often late night in cold and rain, and I was looking for a down jacket. The fact that this is waterproof is a total bonus for me!

First, I'm 5'4 and 135 lbs. I was a little delusional about my 'petite' size, and ordered a small. It would have been okay--if you only ever planned to wear a light shirt underneath. But in the real world, too small. Sent back for a medium= perfect. I can wear shirt, fleece, and then this coat comfortably.

I got the blue color, and it's not shockingly blue. Not baby blue, but a couple of shades darker. Nice.

This coat is full of quality details- so much more than just a run-off-the-mill down jacket. 2 way zippers in front, pit zips (with flaps), multiple inner pockets, etc. The buttons have the colorful SB logo, as well as a more subtle one embroidered on the back right shoulder. Adds a little pizzazz in my book.

When I wear it, I feel like I'm back in the womb.

BUT--It is rather short in the back. I imagine this would be no good when wiping out in the snow (which is what I do when I snowboard..).

The hood is quite unruly--but you can remove it, you can also remove the faux fur, and keep the hood. The hood also has a bill (that can tuck away), that will be very handy for my particular situation in late-night cold drizzles.

The piece that is next to your face when you zip it up is soft and cozy, with a soft flap over the zipper--but it's white. So if any of you girls where makeup out there, it may show quite easily.

I did test the H20proof-but only at my sink, and it appeared excellent. I would be reluctant to wear it out in a deluge for hours, but it wasn't designed for that.

Anyhow, for my use, this jacket has so many things that I love, and is so comfy, that I wear it around my house. Well, my heater is broken...so I bought this just in time.

Good luck!
