Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

November 14, 2011

As far as down jackets go this is by far my favorite. It is superlight and the most comfortable piece of clothing I think I own.

That said you have mentioned the one area that this jacket doesn't excel at: being wet. Now if you are just skiing downhill and you have layered properly and can vent it should be fine but if you are doing anything like xc skiing or snowshoeing or even hiking this jacket will get damp/wet from your body and move towards being worthless for insulation. This is especially true with a pack. It is impossible to keep your back from sweating when you are hiking with a pack.

For working out in the snow I haven't had a problem unless I overwork and get hot and then the jacket is damp from me.

Best jacket I have owned, and I hate to compromise but for all around use a synthetic is probably better.

Will there be a Gore-Tex or I guess CS version of these? Or is that what the Spikecross 3 CS is for?

Brunton Helios Stormproof Lighter

April 6, 2011

I was given one as a gift for my birthday. Living in Washington state I spent a lot of time hiking and camping many of the coastal areas. Lighter was awesome. Had it taken when I couldn't bring it into a federal building so I bought another. Started climbing some mountains and found out the hard way this thing doesn't light on the tops of mountains. 10k is not going to happen and 14k is only going to work if you brought some bottled oxygen.

Bottom line if you are staying around coastal and wet areas this lighter is excellent becuase of the heat it produces. If you are going to be climbing with it don't waste your money, Bic has your lighter.

Timeless set

Snow Peak Titanium Cookware - 3pcs

Snow Peak Titanium Cookware - 3pcs

Rating for this product: 5 April 6, 2011

Bought this while living in Japan back when I knew about nothing in the camping world. It has been over 10 years now and the set has been on many trips.

*Extremely durable
*Heats up very quick
*Light
*Holds my fuel canister
*Cleans up well
*No coating to wear out

The only downside is the handles can get hot and they can also bend on you at inoppurtune times. Like when you are draining noodles. Overall though the sheer toughness and the fact it functions just like new a decade later impresses me.

Snow Peak Titanium Multi Compact Cookset

Snow Peak Titanium Multi Compact Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 November 2, 2010

This is one of those gear purchases that you will have forever. I have had my set for at least 8 years and it works just like new.

-Light
-Durable
-Boils taste free water
-Easy to clean if you don't burn anything

Part of being timeless is the loss of a coated finish for non-stick/heat dissapation. For me this isn't an issue. If I burn something like chili it will leave some black on the bottom but at home it comes off with a little soaking and scrubbing.

The handles can get hot if you are cooking something on the fire while your other pot is on the stove. Also when using the top to strain water you have to squeeze the handles on the pan tight or they may buckle into the folded position leaving your food to defy gravity on its own.

Brunton Helios Stormproof Lighter

November 2, 2010

Doesn't work at altitude. I have never got it to light about 10k. I was outdone by a bunch of old guys with Zippo's and Bic's. *More proof you get wiser as you get older.

*Past results do not guaruntee future performance.

Just in case you are still not sure from the other 100's of reviews these are probably the best for the price. Only thing to consider is if you are going to be using sharp objects is if you need the expedition model.

Patagonia Down Sweater

Patagonia Down Sweater Full-Zip Hooded Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Down Sweater Full-Zip Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 13, 2009

Pros:
Very light.
Packs well.
Warm with t-shirt to about 5C.
Adj. hood.
High collar.
Comfortable.
Somewhat water repellant

Cons:
Durablity?

Best overall down sweater. The hood is a huge advantage in staying warm. One real world downside is that it is comfortable enough to wear on many days without an outer layer. The fabric extrenally is very light and there is not much that won't put a tear in it. Hard to fault the product though. If it were tougher it would weigh more and that is not the purpose. Just wrote it as information for people who know they are hard on clothes.

Salomon XA Comp 4 GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

October 15, 2009

Anyone converted from the XA 3's to these? I have always been wary of the traction of the Pro vs the Comp but looks like that is the standard now. How does it stack up on climbing/scrambling vs the XA 3's?

My 10th pair

Salomon XA Comp 3 GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Comp 3 GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 15, 2009

I have not found a better shoe. Been looking for about 8 years now.

Pros: Great fit. I wear a size 12 which is pretty much standard for me. I have slightly narrow feet for this size and the lacing system does the best job of securing my foot that I have found. The lacing is quick and I have a hard time going back to laces. (except boots) The traction is very good, nothing works on ice or wet river rock. Lighter than most other waterproof trail runners. Tough shoe especially the uppers. Keep you dry when running into puddles or when it is raining on a hike. Good enough to run 5 miles on a track or 50m sprints. I wear these for practically everything from running, work, church, hiking, etc. Only time I change shoes is for soccer, biking, or when I need boots/dress shoes.

Cons: Nothing is perfect. Laces break, it is going to happen just a matter of when. Don't mountain bike in these, at some point the lace will catch a pedal or a toe clip or something and snap. The laces are 7 bucks and once you do it you can replace them in about 10 minutes. The replacement laces are not the same though as you cannot seal the end at the bottom. They last about a year being used for everything. The soles start to go out, getting thin and not providing the protection from jumping or climbing on rocks. Also the gore-tex will get a hole somewhere by a year. The sole can also start to detach.

Tip: You can tie the laces where they ripped often instead of replacing them. It will at least get you back.

Overall: Like i said I have not found a better shoe. The support of the shoe, waterproofness, and all around usability make this my current shoe of choice.
