Awesome Jacket, Durable and Warm

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 10, 2010

Hi, This review is for the 2010 model which seems different from the previous versions. It has more area reinforced with tougher fabric in the shoulder and arms. Fit is improved since I believe MH lengthened the cut a bit in the torso. I am 6-2 190 and it fits perfectly over baselayer, fleece and even my softshell but still doesnt feel too bulky or excessively large. I havent tested it but seems like a durable, warm jacket but still light enough for backpacking. It packs surprisingly small! (can be compressed much more than the size of the included stuff sack)

Awesome but very short jacket

MontBell Alpine Light Down Parka - Men's

MontBell Alpine Light Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 10, 2010

Hi, this Jacket is about the perfect down jacket for backpacking BUT it is about 3in too short (in Large). The jacket is warm and light, about as good a balance as you can get at any price in regards to warmth, durability, looks and weight. It has a LOT of loft for its weight.I am 6-2 185lb. About a 40-41 chest. The jacket (in large size) has the perfect sleeve length and the chest size is spot on but its waay too short. I compared it to other jackets I have from Marmot and First Ascent (Eddie Bauer) and the sleeve length were all about equal and the chest size and width comparable (maybe a tad smaller) but the Montbell was 3+in shorter. So if you are about 5-10 and dont have a very long torso this jacket is perfect. If you are taller look into other jackets. The only negative of this jacket is the sizing. If it fits you then this jacket is a must have, a great value.

A must have...

Marmot DriClime Catalyst Jacket - Men's

Marmot DriClime Catalyst Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 28, 2010

This jacket is awesome. Its reasonably light and comfortable to wear. It stops the wind (tested it High on a Colorado 14er) and helps keep warmth in. The driclime is quite comfortable and soft enough even on bare skin but the jacket is still easy to put on and take off. The only downside is that the pockets are unlined and that the jacket is a touch shiny and and not super quiet but its pleasant to wear. The exterior material sheds water and even if it gets a bit wet it dries so fast that its amazing, same with the driclime interior lining. The jacket has mesh lining around the armpits area inside for ventilation and a different material on the exterior in the same area. It looks good and overall the jacket breathes well. Great for mid to high activity.

This jacket is a very versatile piece of gear. Its great by itself, over a baselayer or over a fleece midlayer. If you hike in windy weather and dont want to wear a hardshell all the time you need this.

Good with a shell, not so good as outer layer

Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Patagonia R2 Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 June 8, 2010

Hi, I ordered this jacket and returned it. I wanted a versatile fleece to be used as outer layer over a baselayer and as a mid-layer under my shell.I was expecting the R2 to be better. Fit is too short and rides up easily so when you put on pack and or harness it just doesnt work very well. The outer surface is also not smooth or tidy with threads all over the place to hang and catch stuff. The fleece is just a tad thicker than some baselayers but the outer texture works well to hold warmth when you have a shell over it, without it its easy to get cold.I am going to try the R3 next since I need something a bit more substantial. The r2 is just too close in warmth to my powerstretch fleece but the powerstretch fits better and its smooth outer face makes it easier to layer and more durable. Its also way too expensive for what it is. Should be $100 if that.

Patagonia R4 Fleece Jacket - Men's

May 26, 2010

Hi, Im looking for a Jacket to wear over a shirt while going out at night in Colorado (from Colorado Springs to the high country) this coming june is the R4 good for that? I have an old TNF denali which I dont like anymore but served that purpose. Looking for something a bit more stylish and better performing. I already have fleeces to layer under a shell so this one will only be used as outer layer in town and beyond.

Excellent Jacket

Outdoor Research Credo Softshell Jacket - Men's

Outdoor Research Credo Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 14, 2010

Wow, on paper this jacket doesnt look like much but the more I use it the more I like it! So far it has been waterproof and windproof but yet its comfortable even with temps in the 60's. It does not have pit zips but really does not need them since it breathes very well. It is a very simple jacket that works in all conditions and still looks good enough that my GF "allows" me to wear it around town. :)

I am 6'-2" and 185 and the large fits perfectly, I can even wear a thin baselayer + a powerstretch fleece under it and be nice and warm for subfreezing temps. With just a T shirt or light baselayer under it its good to about mid 40's if just walking about.

Awesome Light Jacket

Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

This Jacket is awesome. First off, it keeps you dry. If you get hot (I live in the Tropics) there is plenty of ventilation provided by the mesh lined front pockets (nice and long) and the very long double pit zips. Its work great with a pack even in hot weather. When things get cool, close all zippers and everything is sealed. When I first got the jacket I was a tad skeptical. It is quite light and somewhat thin and the interior kinda looks like a plastic bag sort of (in most forums people complain about this) and feels a tad clammy on bare skin but it isnt bad. But man, it works well. Once you use it you just know it breathes and lets water vapor out. The jacket also is not that quiet when you walk with it but again it isnt bad at all. It actually feels good on you. Besides the zippers the typhoon has a very nice hood. I tested with my C.A.M.P. helmet and works perfectly. Regarding fit, I got a Large (im 6-2, 190) and fit is a bit loose (good for layering) and long enough to be quite nice with a pack on. Overall a really nice shell that is light and packs small but still has great features. Just what I wanted.

I have yet to know if there are durability issues but it doesnt look/feel too flimsy on the outside.

Awesome

Marmot Power Stretch Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Marmot Power Stretch Full-Zip Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2009

This jacket is a MUST have for cool to cold weather hiking/climbing, skiing or even for casual wear. Its surprisingly warm without being bulky. Its also quite comfortable with a nice smooth finish on the outside and its stretchy. I got a large an I am 6-2 190 and fit perfectly, loose enough as not to look light tight fitting active wear but still feels close to the body. Could be cheaper but its worth it. Really a must have as base/mid layer or even as an outer layer on not so cold days.

Vasque Zephyr II Hiking Boot - Men's OD NOT USE

October 13, 2009

I have a pair of these boots and so far they have been completely waterproof. I have crossed several streams and even used them during very heavy rain for a few hours on a trail with water running down it and zero leaks.

Vasque Zephyr II Hiking Boot - Men's OD NOT USE

October 1, 2009

Does this boot work well with strap-on crampons? I am going to Mexico to hike/climb up the Izta and Orizaba Volcanoes and will need cramp-ons on the last part of the routes on summit day. (only on Orizaba is there any long stretch of steep ice/snow with extensive runout) I want to carry only one pair of boots for everything. (including shorter acclimation hikes at lower elevations without any snow or ice). I already have the boots and they have proven to be completely waterproof even when submerged a few inches. I want to be sure crampons are ok with this boot, I have zero experience with crampons.

thx
