Essential bit of kit

Dynafit TLT Vertical + Comfort Ski Brakes

Dynafit TLT Vertical + Comfort Ski Brakes

Rating for this product: 4 February 17, 2009

Easy to fit, and really essential for anyone using these bindings day to day. They are heavy if you race but the waste of transition time caused by straps is extraordinary. There is one BIG problem, in that the mechanism often jams if water gets into the springs and freezes, and they will not deploy. Why do we have to put up with this kind of design fault? Be careful if using in temperatures around freezing. Otherwise seem pretty durable and strong. They do the job.

How to cut skins (the skins are OK)

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Rating for this product: 3 February 17, 2009

These skins are way too bomb proof and too heavy and too stiff. They are extremely grippy and have lower glide than some. Get the glidelites instead. The best way to cut them is to throw the BD instructions and razor into to rubbish. You should simply slice the backing paper at each fold and then fit the skins to the ski with the cut backing paper still on to get the right length. Draw on the paper around the ski profile and then with a set of disposable paper scissors cut 2mm inside this line. This is sooo easy. It is known as the SJH method. I am up to 13 pairs of skins now.

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

February 16, 2009

From what I hear the boots with a bellows flex won't work super well with freerides, and are intended for dynafit style bindings. Having that bellows flex will be noticeable when skiing the boots in a fritschi style binding.-----------------The bellows would make for a super dangerous situation in non-dynafit bindings, unfortunatly.-----------------It is possible - but you need to buy a swivel style ski crampon and pull the teeth off. The attachment stops the sole flexing. This DOES NOT PROVIDE SECURE binding, and pre releases occur, but it does make it possible......if the sole can flex on the other hand forget it.

The zeal of the recently converted

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

Dynafit TLT Vertical ST Alpine Touring Binding

Rating for this product: 5 January 29, 2009

I took the plunge (gulp) and took my beautiful Diamir Freerides off my 186 Legend Pro Dynastars (2006) and put the Dynafits on instead (I changed boots). I instantly shed around 2 kilos. I was delighted to say the least. The pins at the front give total control of the edges, and after some fiddling with the (pre)release settings I could not be happier. They are solid, reliable and pretty easy to use when you have some practise. Yes, you can go into touring mode without getting out of the ski, but it involves a careful Elvis like shimmy and pole leverage. These are not really for olympic moguls with massive skis as the DIN is only up to 10, but they will jump, huck (not really sure what that actually is), ski flat out, half pipe (if you must) and really deliver in icy steep situations. AND you can even use 'em with NTN boots. I home mounted them, but if you can find someone who has the Dynafit mounting jig pay 'em to use it. Life really is too short to mount skis without a jig. Funny thing is, I don't miss the Freerides at all, even with my big mountain setup. All hail Dynafit.

Best touring boots I own

Scarpa Terminator X Telemark Ski Boot

Scarpa Terminator X Telemark Ski Boot

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2009

I have 08/09 orange Terminator X with blue(medium) tubes and Karhu XCD Guides. What a combination! The boots flex when you tour! They are so light I can just manage to "classic" ski on tracks right up to the chairlift and then do turns down the steeps. After then I can go back country trackless touring climbing up and skiing down. Only use skins occasionally. These boots are only 11mm shorter than the black ones. Not sure why anyone would need 4 buckles as when in ski mode they are stiff, powerful and precise. Seem very durable in the new 08/09 NTN binding. My only hint is that medium tubes are for BIG skis only and I am trying to find some soft green ones for my XCD's. I am 90kg and aggressive (on skis) and blue is too strong. The Dynafit setup works well with the included support plate. I am experimenting with my Diamir Freerides as well, and with minor modification of the binding I think they will work! You need the support plate from a ski crampon to stop the boot bending and pre releasing. I never tried the 07/08 boot that everyone hated but this is pure magic. This boot does everything and is comfortable walking around. If you like skiing low stance then watch out, these will make you see over your knees for a change. Check the locktite on the bolts, Scarpa forgot one on my edition and a buckle tried to fall off. Use Red locktite.

Addendum to my last

Fritschi Diamir Ski Crampon

Fritschi Diamir Ski Crampon

Rating for this product: 3 December 30, 2008

Pay attention to Kyroklimber. These DO have a function on low angle breakable crust, and I probably was just put out by a particular event in the previous negative review. However, bear in mind that if you cannot push the teeth through the crust it is like walking on unbalanced stilts and THEY CAN BE LETHAL. In that situation you should be wearing boot crampons with a tool in hand. They are well made and durable.

Excellent beacon but why the altimeter?

Pieps DSP Advanced Smart Transmitter

Pieps DSP Advanced Smart Transmitter

Rating for this product: 4 June 30, 2008

I have used most other beacons except the new Ortovox and have been delighted at the Pieps ease of use and their reliability. Best range of all currently available, especially when tested with other popular brands BUT who in their right minds would be getting out their beacon from its secure location every 500m to check altitude and compass heading? This is surely a big time marketing gimmick. A better add on would be a 457mHz PLB or GPS.

Great idea poorly made

Mountain Hardwear Lightspeed Mittens

Mountain Hardwear Lightspeed Mittens

Rating for this product: 1 April 29, 2008

Lightweight, breathable, warm, BUT seams started separating on second day of normal alpine use. Obviously being made in a factory that uses the cheapest glues and has no quality control. I know that MH is a big company with lots of responsibilities but their reputation has suffered big time in my eyes because of this quality issue. Will think twice in future....

Not sure when I would use them

Fritschi Diamir Ski Crampon

Fritschi Diamir Ski Crampon

Rating for this product: 2 January 29, 2008

Imagine climbing up a steep icy slope, just hanging on with the ski crampons, then it gets really icy and you start to slip. WHAT ON EARTH DO YOU DO?? If you take off the crampons you fall. If you turn around you will fall. Very difficult to back down a slope.....This is what happened to me. I had to dig a hole in the ice and flee. Cool looking, durable, funky, looked good on the pack and I got plenty of glances from other tourers but really I should have used real boot crampons and not these strange substitutes. Buy them for a easy ride to serious trouble.

Good but heavy

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Black Diamond Fritschi Diamir Freeride Plus Binding

Rating for this product: 4 January 28, 2008

I put them on some Dynastar Legend Pros with Garmont Adrenalines and have never been happier. The good old Fritschi wobble is gone. They release well (I can attest to this up to DIN10) and tour well. Never released the touring mode unintentionally and relatively easy to get in and out of. Bit on the heavy side. Front DIN should be half a number higher as they seem a bit soft there like all prevous Fritschis.

Seriously fast "big mountain" skis.

Dynastar Legend Pro Rider Alpine Ski

Dynastar Legend Pro Rider Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2007

Just got these skis, put on some freeride bindings and used adrenaline boots for spring skiing in New Zealand. The 186's feel like 196's. They go seriously fast, turn when told to and can ignore the worst storm rime and ice blocks. Short turns on ice? No problems. High speed GS turns on powder fields? No worries. Heavy to carry up the hill, but what a ride! Not for the faint hearted or those used to soft turning noodle skis. If you only resort ski, don't bother. Kinda sorry I didn't get the XXL's. I do have one concern, however, in that I am totally mystified by the strange metal plates at front and back. What on earth do they do?

Pretty good value

Black Diamond GlideLite Nylon STS Skins

Black Diamond GlideLite Nylon STS Skins

Rating for this product: 4 March 21, 2005

Awesome grip but average glide, these trendy looking skins are good value for money. Easily on and off - I think I save about 3 minutes in transition time - thanks to the BD design sticky side. Awesome attack angle to the slope - you can go straight up. The fasteners work well and don't fall off when stressed. The durability jury is out, however, as they tear and lose fur pretty quickly. Hard to find a skin with better grip.
