Sturdy and Soft

Stoic Merino Comp Trail Crew Sock - 3pr

Stoic Merino Comp Trail Crew Sock - 3pr

Rating for this product: 4 August 12, 2011

Scored two sets on SAC - and I love em. I currently use them for walking, trail running and light hiking. I have a set of thurlos that have lasted a couple of years (with weekly use) and they are finally wearing thin so I thought I would give these a try. They are very soft and the merino wool keeps the smell at bay. Bought the black/pink for myself and blue for my son.

They wick nicely; the seams don't rub my feet in any way. They wash well too- something I cannot say for some other brands (not too happy with Lorpens in that department). They are more sturdy than REI brand and more comfortable.

Great all around day pack

CamelBak Fourteener Hydration Pack - 1587cu in

CamelBak Fourteener Hydration Pack - 1587cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 29, 2011

Scored the 2009 on SAC for my 18 year old son and my boyfriend bought a new one to replace his old Rim Runner. First of all, you cannot go wrong with the Camelbak bladders. While our version (2009) has the older bladders, the new bladders are even more awesome. Changing hoses WAS a real task but they have fixed that. Camelbak has also improved the drying process.
As for the pack, there are several features I admire about this model. I love the internal sunglasses pocket. It is soft and really keeps those important things (glasses, cell phone) safe. The main compartment is roomy enough for several clothing items such as fleece, waterproof outer, etc. Great organizers in slim spaces on the external front pockets. The material is tough and stands up to weather and abuse.

Seriously if you are considering a solid day pack - get this one. It is also very adjustable and ours has been on every kind of frame (skinny to large)

If you have a short torso, I would recommend a woman's Camelbak instead.

CamelBak Fourteener Hydration Pack - 1851cu in

It is not padded. However, it is still very comfortable (coming from a very thin man and a heavy set man - both say it is comfortable)

Works great in cold weather

Ruffwear Cloud Chaser Dog Softshell Jacket

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2010

I have a toy fox terrier and several large dogs. The little toy freezes any time the thermometer dips and we get snow frequently. Originally bought her an XS but returned it for an XXS - and it fits wonderfully. It is loose around the legs, but from what I have read, that is probably a good thing. She is comfortable hiking in cold weather, including snow and rain, with her new coat on. I have definitely noticed a difference in her comfort level, and she stays dry where the coat is. Now if I can find booties that fit her itty bitty feet, she'd be able to stand the snow a lot longer!

My TFT is 11 lbs and wears the XXS comfortably (with a little weight fluctuation).

Fantastic fit and feel

Royal Robbins Sidney Convertible Pant - Women's

Royal Robbins Sidney Convertible Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 30, 2010

I bought these in petite and they fit PERFECT. Royal Robbins always has a nice fit for me and sizes well. The material is so comfortable, stretchy, but it doesn't give the appearance of a stretchy pant. They have a wonderful casual look, pair nicely with most blouses or shirts. I love the roll up cuffs - and they have a slight flair when full length. I was amazed they didn't look funny when rolled - they look like typical capri pants. Even my 15 year old thinks they are cute.

Love the BA system

Big Agnes Ethel Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down - Women's

Big Agnes Ethel Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 23, 2010

I have been using this bag for over a year now mostly in snow and rain - freezing temps. Now, it probably has not dropped below 15-20 in my wanderings, including snow packing, but I know that I am a cold sleeper and I bought a zero bag for these temperatures. The "rating" on sleeping bags really refers to what you could *tolerate* not what you are comfortable with. That said, this is perfect for me and I also have the 15 degree bag for warmer weather.

I love the BA system; I am short "curvy" girl but I also am a side sleeper, including fetal position. I love the fact that I can roam in my bag. It also warms up real quick after I move around. If its not cold enough, I end up sweating.

Lastly, I use my bag with an insulated pad as well as a foam pad underneath the bag. When snow camping, that's all that is between me and the snow and it is nice to have when it's extremely wet.

I grabbed a handful of these on SAC for the whole family. I have used them with my iPod and my Palm Pre - both have had excellent sound for the price. They fit well and as other reviewers have said, very light. I tried them on with a beanie and was comfortable and secure.

Good baselayer

SmartWool NTS Lightweight Zip Top - Women's

SmartWool NTS Lightweight Zip Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 February 19, 2010

I wear this cross country skiing and while hiking. Merino wool = no smell. This part I love. Flatlock seams are fabulous. Is warm when I need it and wicks nicely. Zip helps with venting. I wear this by itself on sunny winter days and as a layer on colder days. Also works as a fairly warm layer for non-aerobic activities.

I bought the magenta (and I usually avoid Pink at all costs) but it has been a nice color addition. This top has a flattering fit as well.

Still a tad itchy, which is why it doesn't get 5 stars. Stoic seems to make a much softer merino wool shirt. All in all I am pleased with the versatility and performance of this top and recommend it.

Dependable!

Black Diamond Vista 3-Person 3-Season Tent

Rating for this product: 5 February 19, 2010

This tent has been through the wind, light snow, ice & rain, and some basic warmer spring/fall weather, too. Performed perfect and as expected in all situations. I use the ground cloth with it as precipitation seems to follow me everywhere I pack. Sets up very quickly, even in rain, and everything stays dry. Ice popped right off, although the poles did get a little difficult to take down due to the ice build up at the connections. Still, it's up and down in a cinch.

There is plenty of room inside the tent for clothes and small items. In my case, I could fit a pack in there (had I wanted to) because I use a petite bag. The zippers were easy to use and I cannot stress how easy set up was.

Cons: It is a heavier tent because of its size and solidness. A minimalist probably needs to look for something different. It can easily be split between packs to lessen its bulk and weight.

Every time I go backpacking, I see at least one more of these tents on trail or in camp.

Great three season tent!

Alpina Discovery Touring Ski

February 19, 2010

Personally I find they still slide quite a bit on packed icy trails (such as ones made by snow mobiles then later trampled by people). If the snow softens a little, you are good. But if it's icy, you will still find some slippage. I hope that helps.

Loving the fit, loving the performance

The North Face STH Pant - Women's

The North Face STH Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 21, 2010

I have the 2008 version, but not much has changed on these...
First the fit: North Face tends to run small (in shirts/jackets) but I'd say with their pants they are true to size. I was THRILLED to get these in a petite/short size. Being a curvy girl, I can actually wear these pants with or without a base layer and they aren't overly tight in the thighs/butt like many others I've tried.

Second, the use: I actually bought these for cross country skiing in the backcountry. I also live in the mountains and it snows quite a bit. Now, on a groomed slope or run, or if you have thick boots, you'd be good with the built in gaiters. For my purposes, I found I sometimes I have to wear another gaiter over it to keep the snow out. I wear waterproof hiking boots around my hometown, and my crosscountry boots are fairly small. The built-in gaiter isn't made for this type of boot. This is of NO fault of the pants.

Pants are breathable, snow/water resistant for all my needs. Since they are low rise, I would recommend a longer parka/shell on your back. Great pant and great fit - I love wearing these!

best slippers ever

Sorel Manawan Slipper - Men's

Sorel Manawan Slipper - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 16, 2010

I'm rating these on behalf of my boyfriend. Bought them for him after looking around at LOTS of slippers. He lives in the mountains, as I do, and has wood/tile floors in his house. It's cold. He wears them EVERYWHERE. I mean, everywhere. After work, slippers go on. Around town, slippers. Driving to work, slippers. He can run outside to get firewood, or something out of the truck, no big deal as long as its not flooded. Snow - no big deal in short distances.
He has a pretty wide foot, high arch and he's suuuper comfy in these. True to size in length. Wears them without socks like I would wear uggs or after snow boots.
If you want a high quality slipper that's really warm, I think these are well worth the $$$.

Comfortable!

The North Face Embossed TKA 100 Glacier 1/4 Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

The North Face Embossed TKA 100 Glacier 1/4 Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 11, 2010

I'm loving the softness of the fleece so far. Took it out on a trial hike locally (sunny winter day), no base layer due to the warmth of the day, and it performed perfect. I love the feminine embossed design (I have the blue tide) and based on other sizing on most NF gear, I went up a size. It is comfortable with or without a base layer. The zipper was a nice vent when I heated up, and it dried almost instantly when I removed my pack. Looking forward to nordic skiing with it - seems a perfect weight layer for me. It's also cute enough to pop into town with!

perfect casual fleece

Columbia Steens Mountain Full-Zip Jacket - Men's

Columbia Steens Mountain Full-Zip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 22, 2009

I bought this as a gift for my father. He is a summer hiker and keeps it to mild weather, but he does live in some pretty cold temps (in the teens occasionally in winter). The fleece is very soft and he loved the bonsai color. He is near 6 ft and probably 170; bought the large knowing he'd like a looser fit. Basically folks this is a perfect casual jacket for him! If you're a technical fleece kind of person you probably need to keep looking; although this would probably do well in mild weather. My father travels a lot and this coat is just what he needs. His wife has a similar one (for women) that she has had for years and she was excited he received on like hers.

Must have mittens

Outdoor Research Meteor Mitten

Outdoor Research Meteor Mitten

Rating for this product: 5 December 12, 2009

Used these mittens for backcountry skiing, overnight in the Sierra in winter and when I need a serious waterproof mitten. Recently I worked on splitting and piling wet wood while it was snowing and in the teen temps (wind, too) all in these mitts.. My hands were SO warm and completely dry. After a wash, they look like new again. I also use them with different liners, depending on where I am at, although the liner it comes with is decent. I wear a small size and they fit well - I normally wear s/m gloves in womens. The drawstring and belted features helps keep these mitts in place and the inners extra dry; a feature I appreciate as I have very small wrists.
