Used as cool weather trail running base layer

The North Face XTC Lightweight Crew - Men's

The North Face XTC Lightweight Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 21, 2011

True to size, I am about a 39-40 chest now from going to the gym so the small it fits snugly, maybe even a bit too snug under the armpits. Applied a little Glide and it lasted me through a 10 mile trail race and kept me somewhat protected from the elements at 6:00AM when the race began. I wish they still made this model, it wicks great, the red color is snazzy and it does the job. I can layer another wicker short sleeve on top of this and put on a really light DWR finish running shell into the low 30s and against moist weather without getting cold (if you're running or jogging that is).

TNF delivers again

The North Face Class V Zip Cargo Trunk - Men's

The North Face Class V Zip Cargo Trunk - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2010

These are looser fitting to the slender and true to size.

I wear 31 pants and jeans, the TNF Small size shorts fit perfectly. These have a netting inside, side pockets and very comfortable. A major plus is the built in strap style belt and pockets. The length is nice and the lower crotch brings the 9" length just above the knees. They don't feel like short shorts.

Gotta be slender.

Mountain Hardwear Canmore Short - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Canmore Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 August 26, 2010

True to Size. I got the 30s and I typically wear 31s for everything else and these fit snug but not tight. These shorts are for the slender at fit size or get the size up if you're not slender but on the fringe. It's definitely a contoured fit. Won't be needing a belt with these shorts. Great material and comfortable. It's light, and will dry quickly. These will feel like short shorts if you're used to looser, longer length shorts.

Darn, they are so close to being perfect but I guess Mountain Hardware shorts and pants tend to run smaller than TNF or Columbia shorts. I'll have to unfortunately return these unfortunately.

The North Face Terra 60 Backpack - 3700-3850cu in

November 11, 2009

I don't think so, I was considering the Terra 40 but it didn't seem to fit right and the internal frame was pretty lengthy. I'll have to check out the Solaris 35 (2100 cubic inches I think). I did check out the Kelty Redwing 3100 and I think it could pass as carry-on. Backcountry has it and I thought the dimensions and size of it was seriously close enough for carry-on.

Here's the link: http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Kelty-Redwing-Backpack-2650-3100cu-in/KEL0404M.html

The North Face Venture Jacket - Men's

November 11, 2009

How long does a jacket like this one stay water proof. I notice a 25 psi rating so after enough time and rain fall should the water proofness fade?

Decent Good!

The North Face XTC Lightweight Crew Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face XTC Lightweight Crew Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 11, 2009

For layering this works just fine, I got mine here at Backcountry.com. I can wear this jogging, to the gym, hiking or backpacking then slip on a windproof fleece and feel perfectly toasty. I also wear equivalents, more affordable off brands that work just as well. However, I do like the anti odor lining which is a huge plus after getting it soaked in sweat and having to wear it again the next day. It dries pretty quickly and is decent quality. I'd consider Nike and UnderArmor in this same category for a light weight, quick dry, long sleeves. I'm not disappointed with the TNF one at all, especially at the sale price I got it at which is competitive with other brands that offer the same functionality.I am 5'7", 40chest/31waist (both fluctuate) and the small fits me perfectly and not loosely.

Just received and like them

The North Face Paramount Convertible Pant - Men's

The North Face Paramount Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 11, 2009

I got my pair in from Backcountry.com and was concerned with all the negative reviews. but the pants seem just fine to me after a wear around today outdoors. I am a 31/30 and the medium/short fits perfectly. The inseam is just like any other 30 length inseam I've had to deal with on jeans and pants. What can I say, I'm 5'7". I was afraid they would be too long as many have complained but they are fine for my shorter legs with hiking boots on.I checked out the seams to see what people wer complaining about and found them to be fine quality, especially compared to cheaper, dirtier same types of pants. These are great for hiking, backpacking but they don't seem durable enough for sliding on rocks and glisading down a hill or mountain. I think the material could take it but the seams in the seat could strain and wear. I like the snaplock belt buckle, the zippers are fine. The pair I got were also made in Bangladesh but again happy with TNF overall quality. The material is great! Thicker material compared to others convertible pants made for fishing and wet conditions. Wish I could find a couple more my size at the discontinued sale price I got mine for! I thought about wearing thermals and negative fleece underneath and it would be a tight fit unless the fleece is super thin.

Great windproof vest, all purpose use!

The North Face Windwall 1 Fleece Vest - Men's

The North Face Windwall 1 Fleece Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 11, 2009

I was loyal to the Patagonia equivalent of the TNF Windfall Vest for the last 5 years. I still wear it to this day. It's great quality, always looked new even after many washes etc.. but after a few years I figure it's time to get a new one, even though it still wears perfectly... so I got the TNF Windfall on sale here and I love it just as much. It's just as good if not better. It's an all occasion, all weather essentially windproof thin fleece vest. I wear it out with shorts, jeans, backpacking, it keeps me warm when worn over a wicker shirt, etc. I wear it hiking, backpacking, lounging, going to the store, etc...I got the mens small and it fits me perfectly (5'7", 154lbs, 40chest/31waist). Everyone needs one of these, they are just that all purpose useful. I'm not trying to sell anyone on it or a particular brand. I literally live in this as the post below states and stand by these windfall/windproof fleece type vests as really all purpose technical gear that looks great just wearing with jeans into the city too.

This is not winter gear but it is decent 3-season gear.

Great fleece for all around wear

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 11, 2009

Pros: I used to wear REI fleece (affordable ones) with a Sierra Designs windbreaker/rain shell over it when gets windy or wet. I got the mens TNF Denali KCS version on sale and it is warmer, better quality and lighter than my REI one which has seen 26 miles backpacking in Bryce Canyon (froze at night, 50s during the day). A thick wicker shirt, the Denali fleece and a soft water proof compressible rain shell fits in my pack just fine and was a perfect decent combination for 3-seasons backpacking (I wouldn't consider it for winter treks though). Small, fits me perfectly. (5'7", 155lbs, 40chest/31waist). Also it wears well with a good pair of jeans in the city, which is a plus, not a minus for me.

CONS: There is more technical fleece, form fitting, more wind resistant and such. This fleece is not wind resistant at all! Get the TNF Windfall if you're looking for wind resistance. It's more a technical fleece, it's basically wind proof. The Windfall Vest is great too, I wear it everywhere.

Conclusion, this is a great non-wind proof fleece, if you want windproof... get the TNF Windfall which is essentially wind proof

Snow Peak Titanium Cookware - 3pcs

September 27, 2009

The better quality ramens (the ones that come with real sauce and real soft noodles) are really good but do weigh a bit more. I found freeze dried strawberry cheese cake mix excellent (the ones graham crackers for topping) and I usually carry one can of SPAM, anchovies, oysters, crackers, a small bag of gummy bears, tortillas (i don't know why) and I'll take dry meat like jerkey or a salami roll and a new sealed thing of cheese cheddar marble cheese from the store. Those seem to last OK on a 5 day trek.
