Arc'teryx Stingray Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Stingray Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 28, 2011

Seeing as I have already reviewed the Sabre SV Jacket, I won't go in to much detail regarding the Stingray seeing as they are almost identical (with some key differences). This jacket is great, integrating technical design with a minimalist approach. It is extremely light compared to most Skiing/Snowboarding jackets out there. The fit, unlike the Sabre, is Athletic, which is perfect for someone like me, at 5'9" 130lb. The other thing I prefer over the Sabre SV, is the collar. At first I was skeptical of the collar, because most Arc'teryx layering pieces with collars run extremely short. The Stingray's collar is perfect; its really tall, but not too much to get in the way. It keeps the wind out, and prevents snow from falling down your neck if any snow accumulates in your hood.

All in all, I like this jacket more than the Sabre, not only for looks, but for its fit mostly. The ONLY reason I prefer the Sabre this year, is because of the color selection in the Stingray. I bought the Sulphur color, and immediately I thought to myself, Highlighter Yellow. It's almost the same as buying a completely White jacket. It WILL get dirty immediately if you're not careful. I like the color, seeing as I've always liked the color Lichen, but I can't get behind this color. The Sabre SV comes in the color Greenlight, which is too good to pass up. I would prefer this jacket much more over the Sabre if only the Stingray had a good color selection.

Sabre SV Jacket

Arc'teryx Sabre SV Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Sabre SV Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 8, 2011

I seriously love this jacket. Gore-tex Softshell really is a great fabric. It has just the right amount of insulation; not too much, but just enough to allow you to wear it by itself on a mild day. The details on this jacket are just perfect, combining technical fabrics with a minimalist design. I went with the color, Green Light, and couldn't be happier. The large pockets in the front are really easy to access. All in all, its a brilliantly designed jacket, with everything you need, and nothing you don't.

One thing I would like to address, is the sizing. The jacket runs about a half size large. To be safe I bought both sizes to really compare the two. Personally I liked the fit of the Small (5'9" 130lb), but the sleeve length/articulation is far superior Medium. So I am just warning those that don't like a relaxed fit, go with the Stingray. For only $25 more, you have basically the same jacket with an athletic fit, and tall collar to finish it off. The only reason I personally haven't gone with the Stingray, is Arc'teryx doesn't carry the jacket in my favorite color: Greenlight!

Arc'teryx Sabre SV Jacket - Men's

December 4, 2011

So here is my proposal for layering with this jacket: Sabre SV, Atom LT, Phase AR. For bottom: Stingray, Phase AR. Would this work for most conditions? Or would the Phase SV work better? It never gets ridiculously cold here so I don't want to be over heating if I went with the Phase SV.

Arc'teryx Theta SV Jacket - Men's

December 2, 2011

It really depends on your size. This jacket tends to run about a 1/2 size larger according to other reviews. Each size adds an additional 2" to length. So a size Small should be just right for you.

Arc'teryx Phase SV Bottom - Men's

December 1, 2011

Phase SV or AR? I live in New Mexico, and will be using one in combination with the 2011-12 Stingray Pant, which is Gore-Tex Soft Shell. Believe it or not, it does get somewhat cold here, and we do have plenty of skiing/snowboarding. Any ideas? I'm also looking at which top to go with as well. I have the Alpha LT with the Atom LT (jacket instead of hoody this time) to layer with.

Arc'teryx Vertical SV Glove

October 2, 2011

Yea, I think the problem I have is the fact that I ordered a medium thinking the smalls were too short. That might also explain the bagginess of the liners. I might go with the small's then. Thanks a lot!

Arc'teryx Vertical SV Glove

October 2, 2011

So I just received my Vertical SV glove, and one thing I noticed between this and the Alpha glove is the liner. Is the liner inside the Vertical supposed to be extremely baggy and large? The Alpha was nice and fitted around my fingers. Also, what size do you wear? I love these gloves, but I can't get the sizing right. The small's felt short, but now with the medium I feel like they are slightly too long, where my thumb doesn't move with the glove. I guess the only reason the original glove felt short is because it felt a little restricted only when extending my fingers out as far out as possible. I really wish I had the option to compare in store. Thanks to anyone that can help! Seriously!

Arc'teryx Vertical SV Glove

September 20, 2011

I'm not quite sure which glove to go with, the Alpha SV Glove or the Vertical SV? I like both, really, but I'm not sure which glove would be a better choice considering the length/style difference. Does anyone know which glove usually performs better? If I'm going to drop the cash on one of these, I want to make sure they will work to their full potential. I have to admit, the Alpha SV glove sounds much better, considering the possibility of being buried in snow. I feel like my sleeves will ride up on my Alpha LT with the Vertical glove.

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

August 29, 2011

The SV will definitely be warmer than the Down Sweater. The SV is fitted with 100 grams of synthetic insulation. I love both jackets, but the SV is definitely warmer. Maybe you can just get both and be extra warm :) Or you could go with the Fitz Roy Down Hoody! Oh yeah, there is also a new jacket out from Patagonia for Fall '11 called the High-Loft Down Sweater!

Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

July 25, 2011

I have a pair of hiking socks. I suppose I'm just used to my snowboarding boots. They are size ten, but then key to fitting boarding boots, is to have them tight but not constricting at all. After doing a bit of research, I learned about hiking boots having toe boxes, and some are generous. The reason I chose these over other boots, is the slim heel and ankle support. I have really skinny feet.

Salomon Quest 4D GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

July 24, 2011

So, I have the Cosmic 4D GTX Boot. I measured my foot inside REI, I was size 10 right on the dot. I have a narrow foot. The question I have is because, when I finally had them arrive, they felt really large. Anyone have some suggestions as to what to do? I was told I probably shouldn't go below a 10, but I feel like I should. Keep in mind, this is my first pair of backpacking boots. Thanks!

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

February 26, 2011

So is it just me or does the jacket version of the Gamma MX have a shorter cut than the rest of Arc's jackets? I have the Atom Hoody, and the Alpha SV. They all have the drop back hem. I'm wondering, does the hooded version of the Gamma have this feature? I just feel like its pointless for a jacket that is 98% windroof to be so short. Don't get me wrong, I realize it is for climbing with a harness, but I am looking for an all around jacket for Backpacking, Skiing, etc.. So if the Hooded version has this, I am definitely sold, because this is an amazing softshell.

Thanks, Aaron

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

February 8, 2011

I have the Alpha SL, I have had the Beta AR 2010, the Atom LT, and the Gamma MX. They all fit perfectly. I tried out the Sabre SV and it was huge. I know thats how it was suppose to fit, but I could have gone with the small. I just hate downsizing for specific jackets. I feel like it defeats the purpose of them designing the jacket the way they do. I don't know, I am 5'8" 130lb. I should probably just go for the small. I just hate ordering online because of this! Noone carries this in store. When I was in Alaska, everyone carried legit equipment. The closest store here is REI. But they only sell it online lol. I was planning on layering the SV with my Gamma mostly. Thanks for the help guys, I just wanna make sure before I drop $600 on a jacket lol

Arc'teryx Stingray Jacket - Men's

February 3, 2011

To answer your question. This is not an insulated jacket at all. Arc'teryx says it provides 'light insulation' but this can be misleading. I would check out the Phase AR base layer. I wore just the baselayer with it skiing and it was fine in temperatures above freezing (32). I would definitely recommend looking at a mid-layer. Arc'teryx jackets are generally never one-piece insulation. The point of 'light insulation' is to provide superior layering options. Shells in general get colder, and the Gore Soft shell prevents the shell itself from making it colder than it should be. Hope that helps.

Arc'teryx Sabre Pant - Men's

December 21, 2010

Two Questions: First, when will the sizes come in a small or medium for the Totem color?!?! I don't have the pants yet because noone has the sizes, and I really need to get riding! Secondly, I am 5'8" 130lbs 30x32ish pant size. What size will be better? Medium or a Small? I wanted to keep layering somewhat in mind. Although I really doubt I will ever have to wear anything than a light baselayer. Just let me know! Thanks! :)

Arc'teryx Atom SV Insulated Hoody - Men's

November 27, 2010

I will probably just end up going with the Atom LT. I think the SV would be better as more of a stand alone for where I live. I wish they had an in between version haha. With the Phase baselayer or something similar underneath, I should be fine with the LT. The SV just has so many nice features to it :) If I moved back to Alaska I would find more use out of the SV.

Arc'teryx Atom SV Insulated Hoody - Men's

November 27, 2010

Which one would be a better layering piece: This or the LT? I had the LT before, and I remember being somewhat cold. But then again, it was Alaska and now I'm in New Mexico where its generally in the 30's and 40's so far in the day time. Nights are in the 20's and 30's, but its still not even winter yet. Don't let the name New Mexico fool you, its nothing like Arizona here. Its a very high elevation desert, so it does get cold. Not Alaska cold, but still. I am going to be using either jacket for snowboarding in northern New Mexico and Colorado this winter. Anyone out there that has actually tried this jacket out? I liked the LT but it still seemed very light in the insulation it provides. Any kind of answer besides "well it has 100 grams so..." I have read all of the descriptions, I'm just wondering if anyone has tried it out yet, since it is fairly new to the Arc'teryx line. Thanks. Oh and I'll be layering it with the Alpha LT.They have a video with the SV and LT together on that page

Arc'teryx Beta AR Jacket - Men's

August 4, 2010

So I just bought the Theta AR jacket, it is made in Canada and I love it but I am considering getting the Beta AR instead. I wanted to know the length difference.. I have the Alpha SL in a medium and it fits perfect on me. My Theta is rather big, and it doesn't help that it fits so long. So if anyone can help me figure out the sizing, thanks! Oh and I forgot to mention, I am 5'8" 130lbs.
I am scared to get a small because the Alpha SL is perfect in the medium, and I personally don't like switching up the sizes for particular jackets..

Patagonia Active Classic Boxer - Men's

Patagonia Active Classic Boxer - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 May 29, 2010

Seriously, these are the worst boxers ever. I feel like I am wearing a skirt. I thought they would be nice while sitting in my tent, but they immediately fall down because of just how baggy they are. I can't believe I spent $32 for this garbage. The crotch goes almost as far down as the pant leg, which doesn't help any either. If I just saw these spread out on the floor, I would probably think they belonged to Jared from Subway before he went on a diet. I am extremely dissapointed. Unless you wear really baggy pants all the time, these are going to bunch up under anything that actually fits you like it should. Definitely go with the Ex Officio boxer briefs.

Patagonia Fitz Roy Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

January 20, 2010

Well Nathan I had the Hoody version and now I have the vest which is the same but with out the arms.

The hoody version is about 50x warmer than the jacket. I love my vest, but there just isn't THAT much down in it. Also the hoody uses 800 fill instead of the 700.

Personally I looooove the hoody because it is really soft and ligthweight. I live in Fairbanks Alaska and its ALWAYS in the negatives. Way in to the negatives and I can say that this jacket worked just perfect. Especially while having to walk in between classes.

The fit of the hoody is really nice, it is almost a parka, very generous on length. Although it looks a lot better than most down jackets. Seriously you would want to go with the hoody if you really want some sleeping bag warmth.

Rab Neutrino Endurance Down Jacket - Men's

November 25, 2009

Soooo I am having a really hard time deciding on what jacket to go with, I have the Fitz Roy down hoody, which is 800 fill but it has hardly any down in it, it has 180 grams altogether. This jacket is 850 fill with 220 grams, and they also have the Neutrino Plus jacket from RAB that has 850 or 750 with 275 grams of down. The other one I was looking at is the Peak XV jacket from First Ascent which is really cheap, and has 850 fill down too.. I live in Fairbanks, AK and its my first winter here, and its been around -35 so far and i just want something with enough down in it, because I HATE when companies make you pay all the money for the down fill power but no down itself. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME! lol thanks!

Marmot Iceland Down Jacket - Men's

November 16, 2009

Well, I live in interior Alaska and I returned the Sub Zero hooded down jacket, it was EXTREMELY short at the waist, and really wide, so even though it was warm the length really let the cold in. They have the parka version of it, but all it really is, is the length of a normal jacket would be, which is pretty retarded. THIS jacket is 800 fill down and the outer material is really strong and the length is that of a real parka. So i would definitely look at this, or the Greenland Baffled down jacket from Marmot. THAT jacket is much lighter than this one and a lot lighter. Also, you might want to check out the Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Hoody.

Great Warmth, Light weight

Patagonia Fitz Roy Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Fitz Roy Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 16, 2009

Well this jacket is really nice, the 800 fill down is extremely warm. So far I have taken in out in-14 degrees Fahrenheit with just a t-shirt under and I don't notice the cold at all. Well, except for my face, legs and feet lol. The only thing I have found to be kind of a down side is how light weight the outer material is. I am a little scared to walk by a branch with out it ripping. The only other thing is, is the arms on the inside have very minimal down, on the outside arm it has plenty, but the inside of the arms have hardly any down. Not that I have noticed my arms getting cold, I don't know why they would design it like that, maybe because it is made in China. All in all this jacket is really nice and comfy, for all of you in the lower 48 you can't be worried about the cold. Here in interior Alaska, I really have to think about warmth, thus why I am so touchy on the amount of down. Now, the hood is really nice, unlike a lot of other down hooded jackets, when the hood is tightened, it actually helps you see better, not just engulf your head.

Boxy and Large

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 28, 2009

This jacket is really nice, but the sizing is really bad. There is a permanent crease in the arms which doesn't help much when the fit is already boxy. There is a ton of room to layer under it and the length of the jacket is really long. I have the Patagonia R2 fleece jacket in a Medium and it fits perfect. I know that this jacket is considered to be a regular fit, but I definitely either should have went with another jacket like the Mountain Hardwear Nitrous or just downsized to a small, which I do not like to do because I would consider myself a medium usually. So just keep in mind, this is not fitted at all.
