Patagonia Nano Puff Pullover Insulated Jacket - Men's

September 6, 2011

Is it wind resistant or windproof? Patagonia's website says it is windproof, not merely wind resistant? And how water resistant is it? How much of a downpour (or mere drizzle) can it withstand before it becomes saturated and begins to soak? Also how warm is it? If not active, say just casually walking, down to what temps will it keep you warm. What's the durability of this piece?

Great hat ... poor fit

Mountain Hardwear Dome Ruinart Beanie

Mountain Hardwear Dome Ruinart Beanie

Rating for this product: 3 December 26, 2010

Great hat, but it fit poorly on me. I take that back, it fits well for casual use, not too tight whereas you'll get hat head (you do but not as bad as most beanies and hats). However, when I run and the wind picks up (15-20mph) it doesn't fit well, not snug enough. I've had to constantly adjust it so the wind won't blow it off my head. Otherwise it's a great great hat, warm, comfortable, wicks well, and as advertised, stops the wind. You just need a bigger head than mine.

The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Women's

November 28, 2010

Which will keep you warmer, TNF Denali or Patagonia classic retro-x? The Denali is a bit heavier but the Retro is windproof. How well does the Denali hold up if the wind picks up, most fleeces do not block wind at all. Trying to find out which will be warmer for my wife.

Better...second time around

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 26, 2010

I bought it, liked it, but returned it. I posted a review late last year and said it was a good jacket but not a keeper. The Marmot Leadville I bought to replace it got returned as well (I'm very critical of my gear). I thought I'd give it another try (killer deal on SAC, couldn't pass up). The second time around has changed my view on this jacket. First of all, it's a great jacket for runs, which is what I intended on using it for. For overall warmth, buy something heavier, this will not keep you warm. It is insulated (very thin lining) but by now means meant for the winter chill. It's tight, I ended up getting a small this time as opposed to a medium (5'6 135lbs 36in chest). It's SNUG!!! Can only get a baselayer underneath (forget a sweater). If you want room to layer, size up. I got a small cause it moves better (hence I use it for running). It breathes very well (better than the Marmot) and is pretty water resistant (better than the Marmot). I actually liked the fact that it was lighter, especially for running. It is nearly windproof, but again it won't keep you warm unless you're moving around. It's stylish, the Carrot isn't bad (it's bright for running at night). Again, it's very snug, lightweight, breathable, great water resistancy. The best winter running jacket I own.

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

December 24, 2009

How does this compare to the mhw alchemy in terms of warmth? Both are soft shells but which one is going to keep me warmer. I currently have the alchemy and although it's a great versatile jacket, it's not doing much to keep me warm, especially in the evenings. I don't want to have to lug my mhw downhill down jacket everywhere, looking for a wind/water resist/proof jacket that has some insulation (not just a thin fleece liner). I want a jacket w/ a tech shell and insulation, something that'll keep me warm.

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Women's

December 9, 2009

Is this completely windproof? How water resistant is it? Does it shed snow better than rain? How durable is this, is it prone to rip if snagged or caught. My wife's biggest pet peeve, does the velcro get caught or stick to the fabric (she's had that problem w/ other jackets). The last question will be the deal breaker for her.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 3, 2009

Initially I was looking for a jacket for my fall/winter runs, the MHW Alchemy is not it (much too heavy), am still looking. However, it is a very versatile softshell. Hence it is only a shell w/ a fleece lining. It's very soft inside and out and will provide protection against wind and rain along w/ some warmth but should not be considered a heavy coat. Once the full brunt of winter comes along you may need something heavier. Although it's stated as water resistant (completely windproof) it repels water much better than most other soft shells that are in the same line (Marmot Leadville, TNF Apex, etc.). It has a small outside pocket, perfect size and placement for your cell phone and a large inside pocket, perfect for your wallet. The two side pockets are placed rather high (I suppose for hiking w/ a pack)for my taste but are lined and quite deep. I'm 5'6 135lbs and the medium fits well. It's not too long as a coat but not too short where you'll be exposed if lift up your hands. Some taller reviewers had issues w/ the length. Whereas I'm vertical challenged you should know that this jacket is a trim fit as far as length, so you may have issues if you're nearing 6 feet. The cut is somewhat athletic and snug but not too tight. The wrist gaters took a little getting use too but function quite well. They do tend to get a bit hot when in warmer weather or being active but do not allow wind or snow to get through. A good solid jacket that's stylish, versatile, and that'll keep you reasonably warm.

Stoic Merino 150 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

December 1, 2009

The arms will be too long regardless of size unless you have extremely long monkey limbs. The fit is tight, as is form fitting. I'm 5'6 135lbs and the small is very very snug. You may want to go w/ a medium. My small is a somewhat skin tight. It's an okay base layer and will keep you warm but be warned, the sleeves will be looong.

Not bad ...

Stoic Merino 150 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino 150 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 1, 2009

I just received my Stoic merino crew yesterday and put it on as soon as it arrived. It's not bad, not great, but not too bad. It is soft, not plush like polartech next to skin but then again the fabric is much thinner. As advertised, does not itch at all. The color is misleading on the computer (as are most pictures). The pool/white is more aqua/creme. The white isn't a bright white but more of a dirty, creme color, which is okay, easier to keep clean. I'm not in love w/ the look, but it isn't bad. The sleeves are crazy long, okay if you plan on using them for running since the thumb holes will add some warmth for your hands but for casual use are a bit of an eye sore and a nusance (you'll have to roll them up). The fit okay. I'm 5'6 135lbs, 36 chest and the small fits snug, slightly tight but not restrictive or too tight around the chest as other reviewers have stated. You will have some nipplage (only looks good on girls) since the material is thin and if it's cold. It insulates fairly well as a baselayer but will not protect you from wind (wasn't designed for that). In 40 degrees w/ a wind breaker it was adequate (a bit cold but I was only standing). If used for aerobic activites it would do quite well. Wasn't able to use it for outside runs since I broke my toe but did take it to the gym for a 40 min cycle session. It wicks well, as well as my Capilene if not better and dries as good if not better than the synthetic polypro. It wicks moisture quite well, better than polypro when you first start to sweat, but when you've reached a full out sweat, it'll soak through just like polypro. It took about 10 - 15 mins to completely dry out. Although it didn't smell afterwards and is able to fight odors it did smell when I was sweating out. The best I can describe the smell is burnt wool. As I stated I wore it straight out of the bag and didn't wash it prior to using, so that may have been a factor. All in all, not a bad piece. Truth be told I expected a little more. Aside from the odor fighting abilities and the slight advantage it had over wicking moisture it's not much better than my synthetic Capiliene. I bought it on sale at SAC so I'm satisified w/ it but wouldn't have bought it for full price. I haven't taken it running yet so maybe my view will change. It is a good base layer, will keep you warm, wicks and dries well and doesn't smell. But it costs more than synthetics and probably won't last as long. To each his own ...

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

October 15, 2009

I have the Marmot Leadville and have been using that jacket for my fall/winter runs. It breathes okay, is a bit hot in anything above 40 but is not very water resistant. I was thinking of using the MHW Alchemy to replace the Leadville but am worried that it's "too much" of a jacket for that. Mind you I live in the Wash DC area, it gets cold but not sub-zero cold. I hear that the Alchemy is very water resistant, almost waterproof, one reason why I'm opting for it. But again, it feels heavy and my runs are usually 5 miles. Any thoughts ...

Not that great ...

Marmot Leadville Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Leadville Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 15, 2009

I wanted a softshell for running in the fall/winter in the Wash DC area. After researching several jackets I thought that the Leadville would fit the bill. It's not bad, it's light, somewhat insulated and fits well. I got it mainly cause of the bright orange (which BC no longer has) so I would be more visible at night. I ran in it one evening when it was 50 degrees and windy. I overheated after about 2 miles (I usually do 5)and was getting clammy inside. I then ran in the low 40's in the rain. Although it did block out the wind and did a decent job or regulating my body temp it didn't do a great job of keeping me dry. It is only "water resistant" at best. It was only a drizzle and eventhough I wasn't soaked, water did leak in. Best for casual use and moderate activity. My search continues, yes I will be returning it.

Good...not great

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 13, 2009

I was researching several softshells, mainly to go running during the fall/winter months in the Wash DC area. I ordered the Shift, mainly cause of the price and the rave reviews. Though I can't say I'm disappointed I can't say I'm thrilled either. It is a good jacket, feels soft, fits well, light and blocks wind. The clincher was the collar, it kept rubbing against my adam's apple and chin and bothered the hell out of me. Also the fit is snug and athletic (which is what I wanted) but it didn't move as well as some others I tried. And though it was light, seemed lighter than other softshells that were in that price range. Ultimately I ended up returning it and buying the Marmot Leadville (when it went on sale). The Leadville was a bit heavier, moved slightly better, but most of all, didn't rub against my chin and throat. All in all, not a bad jacket, was almost a toss up between the two(yeah I do have some regrets returning it).

Marmot Sharp Point Softshell Jacket - Men's

October 11, 2009

I am debating between this, the Marmot Leadville, or the MHW Alchemy. I'm primarily looking for a fall/winter running jacket. Also looking to have a jacket I can wear around town, something that'll keep me warm but not too hot and heavy where I'll overheat or have to take it off once I go indoors. The Alchemy, in my opinion is a better built jacket than the Leadville but is too hot (and no ipod/mp3 pocket) and is stiffling indoors. The Leadville has the side panels for breathability but not as warm if standing idle. I haven't had a chance to test the Sharp Point. I believe it's as heavy as the Alchemy but lighter than the Leadville. I'm impressed that is has pit zips. Do they really help regulate body temp when running (usually do about 5 miles). Has anyone used it during the fall/winter months to go running and use it as a casual jacket. Any thoughts ...
