  • Bio:

I'm a college student and an elementary school teacher. I'm passionate about spending time in nature, and am always looking for an opportunity to get outside with my dog. We're a great tandem on the trail. When it comes to gear, I'm quick to look, slow to buy. When I make a gear purchase, I want it to be right the first time!

Outdoor Research Advanced Bivy

Outdoor Research Advanced Bivy

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2011

This is one awesome bivy! After bringing the Advanced Bivy along for multiple week-long excursions in Blue Ridge, I have come to rely on this guy. When the temps are warm, the bivy breathes nicely and keeps the bugs at bay. In cold weather it's a cozy non-restrictive safe haven from biting winds. It is absolutely waterproof, ridiculously lightweight, and packs down to nothing. If you're considering purchasing a bivy, give the OR Advanced the attention it deserves.

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Green Insole

Superfeet Trim-To-Fit Green Insole

Rating for this product: 5 June 8, 2011

These things are amazing. I slipped these into a brand new pair of Asolo's, the day before an 8-day training program in the N. Georgia mountains. We averaged 5 miles/day, max'd out at 10 miles/day, and I had zero complaints from start to finish. Yes, I did experience some soreness/slight discomfort during that week of breaking-in the new insoles; but pushing through the initial discomfort was absolutely worth it!.

Since breaking them in, I've relied on these Superfeet for several more 8-day backcountry trips, and they have only gotten better with time. After a long day's hike carrying +40lbs, a quick glance around the fire will let you know who's rocking Superfeet insoles... most folks rip their boots off so quickly you'd think their feet were on fire; the folks who are relaxing in their hiking boots, the Superfeet users, have been experienced. Give 'em a shot, you're feet will thank you!!

Kavu Chillba Hat

Has anyone seen the "Pyrite" color in person? In photos it looks like it could be anywhere from a darker burnt orange, to the pale orange shown above. Thanks in advance for your help!

The North Face Skareb 65 Backpack - 3480cu in

The North Face Skareb 65 Backpack - 3480cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 4, 2011

Every time I hit the trail, another 5-star reason to love this pack comes shining through!

I have used several different packs/manufacturers over the years, but this one forever changed my backpacking mindset. It wasn't until taking a four-day trip with a minimalist backpacking buddy (using a Skareb 65), that I realized the unnecessary strain and discomfort I was putting myself through. He agreed to switch packs for a few hours on the second day of our trip, and I was amazed at the difference this pack can make. The X-radial suspension system turned a 40 lb load into a walk in the park! I went from a sweaty exhausted mess, to a smiling and WHISTLING carefree backpacker... until we switched back :)

Anyhow, I have owned this pack for several months now, and I have a list of my favorite Skareb-attributes.
* X-radial frame is the best suspension I've ever encountered: stable, lightweight, and lightens the perceived weight of carrying load
* No rain cover needed
* Backpanel is comfortable and well-ventilated
* Material is surprisingly durable, and exceptionally lightweight
* Cavernous pack space
* Good looking w/ an even mor attractive Liftime warranty

Thanks TNF, two thumbs WAY up!

The niece loves it!

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Fleece Jacket - Girls'

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Fleece Jacket - Girls'

Rating for this product: 5 April 4, 2011

I bought the adult version for my girlfriend last year, and she wore it ALL the time! "Monky Fur" quickly became the newest addition to the family-vernacular. Her niece and nephew were always cuddling up to her and petting her arm or rubbing their faces on the jacket (it's the softest thing in the world!!). My girlfriend's niece now has a MonkeyFur of her vey own, and loves it dearly! It fits true to size, is easy to clean, and makes her smile. 5 stars; no hesitation.

Petzl Tactikka Plus Headlamp

Petzl Tactikka Plus Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 January 8, 2010

Bought this for little bro, who is a budding bow-hunter/outdoor enthusiast, and he hasn't taken it off since he took it out of the plastic. They say 1,001 recommended uses, but I bet this 13 yr. old could double that figure!
** Excellent battery life
** Good durability
** Sufficiently bright for 100s of uses
** Comfortable fit
** Red lense for Night Vision!!

If I were you, I'd give this little guy a shot!

Zinetic Z Pocket Slipper - Unisex

Zinetic Z Pocket Slipper - Unisex

Rating for this product: 4 January 8, 2010

Wear these around the house (with socks) for a little while before depending on them outdoors. Once you break them in, they're great. They're pretty cool to have in the pack, because they're so lightweight, and compactible. I was really happy to kick off the heavy boots and slide into these bad boys for kickin' it around camp. Not quite 5-star, but a solid buy.

Gotta Love It!

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 4, 2009

I want to start by saying, I Love it! Suprisingly warm, breathable, lightweight & super compressible, HIGHLY water-resistant, good-looking, and comfortable. This pull-over is where it's at! Now to the potentially helpful parts that aren't listed in the TechSpecs... Heeding the advice of other reviewers, I purchased the L and XL, just to make sure I got what I needed. My sizing (6'3", 180lbs., 42.5" chest measurement, 34" natural waist)

L = comfortably form-fiting in shoulder/chest/sleeve-length/torso girth; garment length ends abruptly at the natural waistline (this and thin baselayer = perfect combo for running in ANY weather above freezing!)

XL = still close-fitting due to athletic cuts; a bit of wiggle room, allows for more options in baselayer selection; sleeves are a touch longer (not a major hinderance, possibly even useful for reaching overhead without catching a draft); adds 2" to torso length!

Both could work, depending on your intended use... I went with XL, and have been a happy camper ever since!
