  • Stomping Grounds:

    Eagle River, Alaska
  • Bio:

I live in the most beautiful place on earth! Alaska is my home and I love being outdoors whenever my schedule allows. Being out, bundled in something warm, enjoying the scenery is amazing. My favorite place to be is on a summit, or a ridge-line, watching the clouds roll past, enjoying God's creation. I hike, trail run, backpack, mountain bike, road bike, run, rock climb(limited), and boulder. I love getting to the top of a ridge and just running the line, enjoying the altitude. I also love photography and i rarely go out without a camera.

I'm currently enjoying the Chugach Mountains near my current hometown. I live 50 yards from the entry to the Chugach state park, nuff said.

Use a Nikwax or Grangers Down Wash in a tumble washer. Dry in a tumble dryer and stop it every ten minutes or so and break up any down clumps by hand.

Patagonia Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover - Men's

October 14, 2010

Anybody have any problems with this material shedding on everything? It's driving me crazy and I don't know if I got a bad batch or not. Gave my wife a hug before heading to work and her black shirt was covered in fuzz. The strap on my Osprey just sweeps the fuzz off in balls, and everything I lean up against or touch, or sit on that's fabric or slightly abrasive is left with fuzz all over it. Did anyone else have this problem at first? I put it in the dryer when I got it home and I've sticky lint rolled it but to no avail. Any help? Not sure if it's possible to get a bad batch of fabric since theyr'e using recycled stuff. Help!?

Costa Del Mar Howler Polarized Sunglasses - Costa 580 Glass Lens

May 24, 2010

Look at Kaenon and Maui Jim. They offer a better quality lense in a safer plastic type lense. See Maui Jim Evolution and Kaenon SR-91 lenses. You will find them both much safer. Kaenon's exceed the Ansi test for high speed impact. They also do so without removing color. They simply filter the glare with anti-glare coatings, not by removing part of the light spectrum. I'd be hard pressed to believe that by cutting out light, you're seeing the 'true colors'.

Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Sleeping Pad

remember also, insulation can insulate both against heat, and for heat. It can keep heat in, but it can also keep heat out. It can work as a sun shade if needed, such as an afternoon nap in a sunny area. The closed cell foam will keep hat out to a certain point, but if next to the body, it'll insulate keeping heat in.

The North Face Prophecy Jacket - Men's

April 13, 2010

It's very possible that this won't hold up but it might. It also might not hold out the water day after day. The fabric is a single layer I believe, and isn't as durable as some of the heavier ones like Gore Pro. I'd look for something with reinforced shoulders or something a little more durable. If you're not going to be out in the rain constantly, this might work fine, and if you don't mind your jacket being pretty well used by the end of the trip. Also with the constant rubbing it can loosen up the fabric around your shoulders. that's why you may want something with a heavier fabric around the high stress/wear areas.

The North Face Caribou Down Jacket - Men's

April 8, 2010

TNF is a great company, but since being bought by fashion company Vanity Fair, imo, their quality has dropped significantly. The name they built their repuation on was based on early 80's mountaineering like Everest. Now everyone wears TNF regardless of whether they interested in the outdoors or not. TNF has essentially become a fashion brand. Their really high end stuff is still really great, but for the most part I stay away from their lower end stuff for technical gear.

All that being said, TNF fits fairly boxy, not much form fitting. If you want to stay warm in Philly, this jacket will do it.

Columbia Waypoint II Shell - Men's

April 8, 2010

What are you wanting to use it for is the biggest question. You get what you pay for, so I wouldn't trust this jacket with much prolonged activity, but for around town and light stuff like camping it might be really wonderful.
As for zip off hoods, I have some and they're useful but I usually prefer a hood that's integrated into the front chin cover. Those kinds will cover you face more in a storm and keep you warmer, if warmth is a concern.

Cloudveil Down Patrol Jacket - Men's

April 8, 2010

All are different insulation types. Down patrol is clearly down, 650 fill to be exact. Primaloft is still very warm but not as lofty. It'll also stay warm when wet, as will fleece as in the R4. I would say in warmth ratings, considering wind chill and convective heat loss, warmest to coolest would be down patrol, primaloft, and then the R4. The R4 is freaking warm as an under layer though. I have a primaloft jacket and it's very warm, especially when cooped up under a shell.

The North Face Novelty Nuptse Down Vest - Men's

I would still go with medium. You want it to insulate, which means it needs to be next to skin, ie. tight.
Honestly, a fleece or softshell doesn't take up that much room. I'd stick with your normal size. I never size up or down and it serves me well. Plus those times when you want to wear it over a long sleeve tee or something you'll kick yourself if you get a large.

Outdoor Research Foray Jacket - Men's

March 25, 2010

No, but I find that stowable hoods are super annoying, and the nice thing about the hood design is that it's integrated with the collar, ie it's all one piece, not sewn on. I like that better because when you have it drawn up and fully zipped, it'll cover your face/chin better.
A good way to keep the hood dry inside during rain is to just let it hang behind, but sinch up the main hood drawcords(not the one that draws the side back, but the one that would pull it down tight around your face. This basically 'closes' up the hood when you're not wearing it and keeps water from getting inside the hood or down your back. But if it's raining I guess you'd have the hood up anyways. What I described is handy in snow as well.

Sierra Designs Microlight Jacket - Men's

March 25, 2010

I wouldn't rely on this jacket at all. 1K says it all. Most "waterproof" fabrics are at leat 10K or 20K. This refers to the number of stitches per square inch I believe. The tighter the weave, the more naturally waterproof it will be. With a fabric less than 10K or 20K, the waterproofness comes from the DWR(Durable water repellency) coating, not the inherent qualities of the fabric itself. I would only use it if you have somewhere warm to go to every night so it can dry out. As AC said, it'll get wet-out. I'd go with something like Gore Pac-lite which is a lot more reliable and will keep you dry longer. Marmot Precip is pretty good as well, although i'd probably still prefer Pac-lite. I traded up from precip-plus to Pac-lite. Gore Pro would be even better, and would last longer. Basically the better the fabric the longer it can hold out in increasingly harsh precipitation. I'd trust Gore-Pro to any conditions, and Gore-tex Pac-lite to Almost anything.
Schoeller makes some great fabrics too, but I think most are softshell.

Update: If you go to the Gore-tex website, you can click the link to whichever fabric you're interested in and they list every jacket made with that fabric, lots of different brands. Makes it really handy if you're shopping.

Feels Great

Scarpa Charmoz GTX Boot - Men's

Scarpa Charmoz GTX Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 25, 2010

Disclaimer: I haven't tested these outdoors.

I have fairly thin, low volume feet, (size 8.5 to 9) and I tried on an 8.5 in the store. After trying on quite a few boots, such as La Sportiva, Scarpa, and vasque, including Vasque 8000's, Scarpa Invernos, and La Sportiva Trango S, among others, I found that Scarpas fit my feet the best. They felt snug and cushy all over with no hard spots anywhere. I found that a lot of the other boots had a hard spot at the back of my heel. Scarpas did not.
I liked the feel of the Charmoz. They felt like stiff, well build hiking boots, as they should. A little less ankle support than others, but they had a great feel and felt firm even when balancing/flexing the toes.
In the end I bought Scarpa Invernos for the warmth, but if i hadn't needed the warmth, probably would have gone with the Charmoz.
Take this review for what it's worth. I didn't own them, but my initial impression was high.

La Sportiva Baruntse Mountaineering Boot - Men's

March 25, 2010

I would say yes, but....
Although I haven't seen these boots locally to try them on, They're a double/shell design. Looks like they also come with a moldable liner, which will be warmer.(could also buy an intuition liner, which will add some warmth to the boots, but I don't know how the stock moldable liner would be on insulation.
I haven't seen these on recommended boot lists for Denali, but if you want to be sure, maybe check with a local guide company, AMS, or an outfitter (AMH) to be sure. You likely WOULD need an overboot, unless you were climbing in a great, really warm window. Not sure i'd recommend them for early season climbing (april/may) but again, i'm not super familiar, i'm just looking at the specs. They would probably work really great with room for double socks. I believe these are LaSportiva's new answer to the plastic boot haters so it looks to be a very warm boot. Home this helps some..

Scarpa Charmoz GTX Boot - Men's

March 23, 2010

My two favorite boots fit-wise, are the Invernos and the Charmoz. I found that they both fit very similarly, with the Invernos obviously having more support. I found the charmoz fairly supportive side to side but definitely offer a nice flex mid ankle while still having a firm footbed. ( I believe half-shank? maybe full) I would say, if you love you invernos, the charmoz will suit you well. I found the fit to be similar.

La Sportiva Crosslite Trail Running Shoe - Men's

March 10, 2010

These don't have a lot of padding and can transfer a lot of shock up the legs. I believe that's the holy grail of mountain running footwear; finding the balance between transfering the feel of the ground so you can have accurate footwork, with soft cushion that helps protect your body. I believe these shoes are more of the cushionless high traction end of the spectrum. Very very grippy and super lightweight! Great for raceday, but I would want to train in something else until closer to race day.

Merrell Robotic Multisport Shoe - Men's

March 10, 2010

These aren't antimicrobial, but as stated by Dakka Guru, the ventilation will help. They are made of all synthetic materials, which will help them dry significantly fast. Still I wouldn't count on them keep smells away given extended sweaty trips, or wet slogs through marshy stuff. They may dry fast but all the nasty stuff dries too. A great idea if it was pretty hot outside might be to rinse them and fling all the water off of them and let them dry overnight. That might help a lot with warding off the nasties.

Best shovel you hope to never use.

Black Diamond Transfer 3 Shovel

Black Diamond Transfer 3 Shovel

Rating for this product: 4 March 5, 2010

I own this and have used it for digging snow pits, moving snow, etc and avalanche courses. The blade is smaller than some, but keep in mind that when you're digging out packed snow like avy pack, that's heavy stuff, and a shovel full is quite a bit even with the smaller blade. The aluminum blade cuts right through hard snow and is very sturdy. I would definitely recommend this. A couple things to note, the handles can stick together when collaped. For a long time i didn't remember that it extended so far. It may take a good tug and jerk to get it to come out all the way. Great shovel and very light. T-shaped handle is nice, and work okay even with mittens.
Hope to never have to use it in a real avalanche situation.
Don't forget, no equipment can ever take the place of proper training.

Great beacon

Ortovox D3 Avalanche Beacon

Ortovox D3 Avalanche Beacon

Rating for this product: 5 March 5, 2010

I love this beacon. I haven't had to use it for rescue, thankfully, but have used it when out and about. First of all, it fits great. The slight curvature of the design even adds a bit of comfort and the straps and sheath are comfortable enough to wear. When I used this at an avalanche course where everyone was using the BCS beacons, the instructor was blown away with how fast i was able to find a buried beacon. He was also impressed with the beep feature.
I love it too. As you get a signal it starts beeping somewhat slowly, and speeds up to a pulse until when you're right over your target it goes to a solid tone, very similar sound to a cardiac monitor. Maybe they made it that way on purpose as a reminder to get your butt over and start digging. Anyways, this is very accurate and responsive. There are only three arrows (one center, and l&r) but with the distance reading and the beeping i have had no problems finding other beacons with it. if I were to buy again, I wouldn't hesitate to look at the D3. I really don't have any real complaints about it. Keep your batteries fresh every season.

Outdoor Research Foray Jacket - Men's

February 18, 2010

This Jacket is great for hiking and being outside all day. As for being on a boat all day long, all summer, i'm not sure Gore Pac-lite is your best bet. It IS Gore, but I would recommend something more like the gore pro-tec. It'll handle the harder surged of sideways water better. That said, I used this jacket on a boat out of Seward alaska just after I bought it and it stood up perfectly to the rain and wind. Had I done that every day though I imagine it might have worn it out by the end of the summer. I've used this jacket for a couple years now as my main rain jacket hiking, camping, and fishing, and everything else in alaska and it holds up realy great. It's starting to feel a little less stiff, like the fabric is loosening up, but i've retreated the jacket with nikwax wash in and it's still going strong. If it's not torential downpours i'd say this jacket would be fine, but if you're going to be out in the rain every single day, i'd get something like a hard shell with Gore Pro.

Decent. It works for winter

The North Face Varius Guide Jacket - Men's

The North Face Varius Guide Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 18, 2010

Good Jacket. I owned this jacket for a couple years after getting a super deal on it at REI. The hyVent fabric is decent. A little heavy and thick, but this jacket won't let wind through at all. Being at the top of a mountain in blowing snow, it held up great and was warm. The hood is decent although the quality is nothing like a more technical shell. The cinches were good but felt weak because of the heavy feel of the jacket. The HyVent won't keep out rain for very long, so this isn't a good summer/ shoulder season jacket. I'd recommend this for winter and for around town. It works great but once things get slushy or rainy, watch out. You'll eventually get wetted out. I've snowmobiled in this also and going 80 mph the wind couldn't make it through. Very warm, but only with some insulation underneath. I recommend a 200 weight fleece at least.

It's a decent jacket at the lower end of the spectrum. Will be reliable but doesn't stand up to OR, MH, Patagonia, or Marmot quality. HyVent is like the baby to Gore fabrics. I wouldn't recommend HyVent over any Gore, Cloudburst, eVent, etc. fabrics.

The North Face Nuptse Down Vest - Men's

February 18, 2010

This is not waterproof. Treating it with a waterproofing agent would probably be useless. The material it uses is a 50D ripstop nylon, which isn't woven tight enough to keep vapor or liquid water in or out. Yes down will be useless if it gets wet, but I think that TNF knows that most people wearing this for technical purposes would likely have a waterproof shell over it. It is pretty hard to find a down jacket/vest that it totally waterproof. I imagine that any perspiration would wet out the down anyways and it would soon become useless in technical situations, since waterproof fabrics don't breath as much as the 50D nylon would. It would hold too much moisture in. Unless you wanted them to put all the down into little plastic baggies and then sew them in. You might sound like a chip bag walking around though.

Cloudveil Koven Plus Jacket - Men's

February 18, 2010

I've used this jacket year round in Alaska. It's a little heavy to use for high cardio stuff but i've worn it as a rain jacket a couple summers/ fall seasons. It's very versatile and works very well. And don't forget the pit zips will help. It is a little heavy for hot weather or heavy cardio but i've used it all summer whenever needed with no issues. For reference it usually doesn't get above 70 when i've used it and it's usually colder here when it rains or when you're at the top of a mountain. You'll appreciate its warmth at 50. I'd say yes, it'll work for what you want it for. 50's will suit this jacket perfectly. I've layered everything from a mountain hardware synthetic fill jacket or even down to a t-shirt. it works for just about everything.

The North Face Aconcagua Down Vest - Men's

February 18, 2010

Most North face garments/ apparel fits the same as a t-shirt size. North Face designs tend to be a little boxy, as opposed to fitted. They'll be a little loose around the stomach if you're fit. They are basically a general fit design, nothing too special. Some of their more technical stuff is more custom fitted but most of their stuff just runs normal sizing. Just decide how much you're going to wear under it normally. I'm 5'10" 160 lbs and wear a small unless I want to really add a lot of bulk under it. But i'd still buy a small cause I never really have to add that much insulation to merit sizing up. I wouldn't enjoy a medium most days cause it's too loose in the torso.

The North Face Aconcagua Down Vest - Men's

February 18, 2010

It might zip in part way, but since it's not part of a jacket system, the zippers (if they will start to zip at all) probably won't match up perfectly at the top. i've zipped jackets together before that weren't made for each other. It might work but you'd have to try it in the store.

The North Face Aconcagua Down Vest - Men's

February 18, 2010

Not totally sure if i'm 100% accurate, but the Nuptse vest might also be sewn through as opposed to the baffle design. This means that where it's stitched, there essentially is a line of no insulation between you and outside. So cold air can get in through the stitching. The Aconcagua is baffled which means there are no places where you don't have a lack of down. You're totally covered cause they've stitched it into baffled layers so everything is covered. The Nupste may make up for the design with the 700 fill. They would probably be comparable in warmth if i'm right about the design. What the Nupste makes up for in fill power it loses in design.

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

February 18, 2010

Be careful. Most companies don't put a waterproof pocket in because that would hinder the breathability. With it so close to your body your perspiration will drive the moisture right through a breathable material, so you'd have to have something much less porous like rubber, with wouldn't lend to a very breathable upper torso section. Your perspiration will get onto anything cold in that pocket. As long as the dewpoint is lower than your body temp, which it will be. The plastic bag idea will work, just make sure it is air tight and it will certainly be water tight also.

Great lightweight down layer

MontBell Alpine Light Down Parka - Men's

MontBell Alpine Light Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 16, 2010

Great jacket. I love how light this is. When you pick it up it basically feels like air. When you put it on you forget you're even wearing it. The front is big enough to cover your chin and mouth which is really nice. It's sewn through but the 800 fill still seems really warm. By itself, if you're not active it sometimes doesn't feel like enough, but with a shell over it, or if you're active, it holds in a ton of heat. i often just wear a tshirt under it. The fabric changes temps so fast that you can run outside to your car in short sleeves, and even if you left the jacket in the car overnight, throw it on and you'll instantly start feeling warmer. It grabs heat and holds it in. I attribute that to the 800 fill. Great jacket. Doesn't leak feathers very much either. Highly recommend. The hood is also large enought for a helmet but isn't too big that you can't wear it alone. Overall this jacket is super cozy

Great reliable jacket- Good in winter

Cloudveil Koven Plus Jacket - Men's

Cloudveil Koven Plus Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2010

I have an older Koven, from before they integrated the hood with the collar and added the Schoeller fabric. It's still VERY similar. Same Cloudburst fabric. IT's a great jacket. It's stretchy in fit, and keeps out wind and snow and rain. In heavy rain/ wet snow it can get a wetted out look but i don't ever remember it soaking through. In typical Cloudveil fit, the arms feel huge, the torso feels an inch too short, and the neck is too tight to cover your mouth if you need it to. Nonetheless, i love this jacket and it's a great storm shell. Have a balaclava on hand and sinch down the waist elastic. I've used this jacket in storm conditions where it was blowing snow (roughly 40mph) and the cloudburst fabric won't let anything through. Wind will beat against it but it keeps it all out. Very nice jacket. It stays at the top of my list of favs up with my OR Mentor shell. The Cloudburst won't let you down. May need to retreat the DWR eventually as I did. Use nikwax wash in or Grangers. I'm 5'10" 160lbs and wear a small.

Nice little light jacket

The North Face Prolix Softshell Jacket - Men's

The North Face Prolix Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2010

I like this jacket. It is very light, and great for keeping the wind out on a hike or bike ride. Not great if its drizzling but it's a nice option on a shoulder season run/bike. Fit's really nicely and is a little stretchy which is nice for movement. Typical North Face fit means it's a little big in the torso if you're a normal fit build. Rating it down for that. Otherwise a good jacket. If we could figure how to get TNF to cater to athletic builds then this might be a near perfect jacket.

Great jacket- Light Rain/ Light hiking

Marmot Oracle Jacket - Men's

Marmot Oracle Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 16, 2010

I've owned a couple of these over the years. It's a great jacket and the PreCip Plus fabric is adequate. I would only recommend this jacket for light rain less than 2 hours, or as a back up to throw into a pack. I would classify it as the type of jacket you'd take on a day trip when you can come home somewhere dry. On an overnight, I recommend at least Gore paclite or eVent. I traded mine in eventually for a bigger brother. I just wasn't satisfied with the fabrics Marmot was using at the time. Now they have some better ones but the precip Plus won't keep you dry all day. The jacket will dry fast. The inside is smooth so wear a base layer or you'll feel extremely clammy. The side zips are nice but you'll still get clammy, especially if it's raining and humid. I couldnever tell if the jacket wetted out or just built up moisture from my body, but the inside will get wet if you're active. If you're out in town, this is perfect. The DWR coating is great, but the fabric itself isn't technical enough to take with you on a big trip. I DO recommend this for light applications. It fits really nice (i'm 5'10" 160# and wear a small). For heavier longer trips look elsewhere. It does pack nice and can fold itself inside one of the pockets. Watch out though because the stiff hood can get permanently bent. (Might be fixable with a cool iron with a cloth over it.)

Nice jacket if you're doing light things or don't mind being a little clammy until you can get back inside.

Good jacket but you need another monkey for the grooming

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 16, 2010

This is a very nice jacket. Its warm and the MH fit is nice. Tight around the shoulders and perfectly cut arms with a fitted torso. If you buy is too small it will cut into your arm pits really bad, watch out. I returned this after a week because the monkey phur fleece gets matted up really easily. It's fine if you're combing it out, but I don't want to have to care for a fleece jacket like that. It's a great jacket, but I was afraid the loft would be lost when it got too matted. Looks nice and the furry collar feels great. I give it a 3 for its great quality but rate it down for the required maintenance. It was very very warm and a had to take it off often when inside or i'd start sweating.

Great for town/ light wind

The North Face Windwall 1 Jacket - Men's

The North Face Windwall 1 Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 16, 2010

This is a great jacket for around town on shoulder seasons. I wouldn't take it anywhere technical due to its lack of a hood. The windstopper fabric is great for stopping any kind of wind. I'd always recommend at least a long-sleeve tee underneath though since the inside isn't nearly as soft and inviting as the soft outside. Wish they had reversed the fabric. Great jacket nonetheless. I'm 5'10" 160lbs and the small fits well. I don't wear anything heavy underneath. 100 level polartec at the most. This will work in winter around town if you layer some fleece underneath or down/synthetic on top.
