Auspex Pack

Mountainsmith Auspex Backpack - 3850cu in

Rating for this product: 3 November 29, 2005

The pack is only decent in comparison to the Arcteryx Bora 80 that I used to have. I bought the Auspex because of the wide hip belt, which gives the pack more of a grip on my waist than the Bora 80 did. In that aspect the pack is great, but the lid doesn't seem to secure as well over the opening of the pack, and the lid's zipper is placed a little too low if you like to get things out while hiking and without taking the pack off. The nylon webbing likes to fray at the ends, I had to re-melt them myself. The side pockets are large enough to fit 1L Nalgenes in them but are secured only by elastic bands, not so good if you need to squeeze through tight places. The VX 21 stuff is nice, it seems like it could hold up to lots of abrasion, but it's only used in the yellow exterior panel, the rest just seems to be regular nylon. All in all, it's still a decent pack that’s nice and slim, and if you like more pressure on you hips rather than your tail bone, this is a good pack for you.

Garmin eTrex Vista

I've taken the eTrex Vista to Big Bend National Park. Works well. The altimeter was accurate without calibration. Calibrating the compass was easy. The display is not hard to read even though it is not in color, and even in sunny conditions. I think that this GPS gives you the most for your money.
