Arc'teryx Theta SL Hybrid Jacket - Men's

February 19, 2012

Each of those shells have different styles of the same materials. The AR is the heaviest (about 17 oz) and is 3 layer Goretex Pro Shell. The LT is a little bit lighter than the AR but also 3 Layer pro shell. The SL is 2 layer Pac lite. So they are different variations of waterproof breathable materials. The weights and fabric thicknesses will influence how much warmth they will retain, but only by a slight factor.

Long story short, most hard shells will retain similar amounts of heat. If it's not right, wear some baselayers/midlayers or look into a waterproof softshell or waterproof insulated jacket!

Patagonia Alpine Guide Softshell Pant - Men's

February 19, 2012

I'd recommend a small. It has the shortest inseam and is still 31 inches long so anything bigger will be too long. The waist fits 29-30, but the stretchy nature of the fabric should make a small perfect.

overall, it's a good start

Kokatat TROPOS Helix Dry Top - Men's

Kokatat TROPOS Helix Dry Top - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 12, 2011

I bought this dry top for a summer of sea kayaking in the San Juan Islands. I have worn (borrowed) dry suits and paddle jackets before, but decided that my best value for this summer was a dry top. I chose Kokatat because I personally think they make the best immersion wear, and I chose the Tropos fabric because it was half the price of Gore-tex (I figured that when I had the funds to buy a dry suit, then I would go Gore-tex, but for now a dry top is a compromise anyway so why not save some money).

In terms of overall use, here are my thoughts. The wrist gaskets are comfortable and watertight. The neck gasket is very uncomfortable (to me) and I had to stretch it out using a nalgene 16oz food jar. The dry top has limited breathability, but is fine on cool/cold and/or windy days. I liked having a jacket to keep me dry on the water and it helped me protect my rain jacket from salt. It obviously did a better job at keeping me dry than a rain jacket would have.

Overall, this is a good place to start. I think that a paddle jacket, dry suit, and dry top all have a use sea kayaking depending on the conditions. For me, the dry top helped me in certain conditions, but by no means is this dry top the most comfortable and versatile piece to keep you dry. For moderate to casual touring go with an anorak or paddle jacket, for expeditions and cold conditions go with a dry suit. For mixed conditions and trips, a dry top could be the ticket!

Classic 2 man tent

MSR Hubba Hubba Tent 2-Person 3-Season

MSR Hubba Hubba Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 September 27, 2011

The Hubba Hubba is one of the gold standard 3 season 2 person tents on the market. It's lightweight, priced competitively, big enough, and time tested. The set up of the tent is super straightforward and easy to do by yourself. The free standing design is nice and fairly sturdy. I've heard people knock the weather/wind sturdiness of this tent, but I've had it survive very wet Pacific Northwest conditions and windy desert conditions admirably.

Strong points of this tent - light, compact, easy to set up, durable, weatherproof

It would be nice it if was a few inches longer and/or wider (although you could say that about any tent) and had a couple more points to attach guylines, but overall this tent is great and worthy of any solo or 2 person adventure!

And a side note on awards - Other manufacturers have made great tents that have garnered awards of recent from Outside Magazine and Backpacker (like the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL, Marmot Aura, BD Mesa), and it's easy to forget that this was Backpacker's editor's choice in 2005. These magazines make sure to have new award winners every year (unless they bestow a lifetime award (like Backpacker's gold award)), so don't forget about the Hubba Hubba just because it's been around for a while!

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's

September 8, 2011

Hello,

This jacket will offer more than enough protection from the weather and might be a little heavy/less breathable for what you're looking for. If you're set on getting an Arc Teryx jacket, I would recommend something from their SL line (Alpha SL or Beta SL). Personally, I would recommend an eVent jacket for better breathability or a lighter (thinner jacket) like the Marmot Supermica.

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel Bag 90 - 5492cu in

September 7, 2011

I think the 90L duffel would be to big and heavy to be comfortably worn as a backpack. If you plan on carrying it long distances as a backpack, I would recommend the 60L. As a frame of reference, most women's backpacking packs are 60-80L and they have frames and padding to be worn as backpacks.

KEEN Newport Sandal - Men's

September 6, 2011

From the Keen website:

Sandals
Sandal Washing Instructions
All KEEN water sandals (both leather and polyester webbing upper) are machine washable and have been treated with AEGIS Microbe Sheild, antimicrobial technology that helps prevent odor, staining and deterioration. We've also taken great care to develop leather uppers that will not crack, shrink or stretch when washed. Even KEEN leather Newport sandals are machine washable. Use a small amount of detergent, wash on gentle cycle and air dry.

Leather
Caring for Leather
We've carefully selected leather uppers designed to last. Then again, if you're wearing your KEENS daily, they won't always be scuff and dirt-free. We recommend using a nubuck leather cleaner and conditioner (Nikwax is a brand we like) found at most better footwear dealers and outdoor gear shops.

Arc'teryx Gamma LT Softshell Jacket - Men's

September 5, 2011

Hello,

This jacket is a softshell jacket made by Arc Teryx. Most Arc Teryx products are well designed and high priced (so it is on the higher price scale for softshell jackets). The jacket does have hand pockets (they are the front pockets) that are slightly higher on the jacket so they are accessible when you have backpack with a hip belt on.

The jacket is not designed to be a base layer or an insulating layer. It is a highly breathable, windproof, jacket that will be best in snow or light rain designed for cool weather aerobic activities. It's a versatile jacket.

For serious rain protection, I would recommend a different fabric like Goretex paclite, Goretex Pro shell, or eVent. This is more of a lightweight and value Pertex shell that will help in a rain storm but I would not classify as "serious rain protection."

great silk liner, great price

Rab 100% Silk Sleeping Bag Liner

Rab 100% Silk Sleeping Bag Liner

Rating for this product: 5 August 2, 2011

I decided to buy this silk liner to protect my MH Ultralamina 32 and Montbell UL Spiral and to add a couple degrees to each. So far I've used the liner for about 60 nights with my Ultralamina 32 and I love it. The liner is very comfortable and smooth to the touch. I'd say it adds a degree or 2 (minimal and just barely noticeable), but my two main reasons for owning this liner are:

1. It protects my sleeping bags from dirt/oil and helps preserve the life and loft of my bags.
2. It allows for versatile temperature regulation so I can unzip part of my sleeping bag or cover my or less of my body with the liner to get just the right temperature.

The Sea to Summit liners are of similar quality but cost about 1.5 times as much. I'd highly recommend the Rab silk liners for their great quality and value. The standard silk liner works well in my mummy bags (and is a few bucks cheaper with a negligible weight difference). It weighs 4.8 oz not 12.3 oz as stated to the right.

lightest fully featured rain jacket out there...and you look good in it too

Marmot Super Mica Jacket - Men's

Marmot Super Mica Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 2, 2011

In my opinion, this is the ultimate lightweight rain jacket on the market. I'm not advocating that this replaces Goretex Pro shell 20 oz alpine rain jackets or other significantly burlier jackets, but I think that this is the perfect compliment to those heavy thick 4 season rain jackets. Or if you're not into big mountaineering/backpacking/ski touring then this is a great versatile rain jacket for general outdoor use.

I use this rain jacket for spring/summer/fall outdoor adventures. Lately I've been using it for sea kayaking expeditions and it has performed great. I love that this rain jacket has full pit zips, 2 standard hand pockets, a solid hood, and is still just 8 oz with a durable Membrain Strata fabric.

This jacket is as waterproof and breathable as any jacket that uses fabrics other than eVent or Goretex. It's stood up against heavy rain on consecutive days and kept me dry and comfortable and aerobic activities like hiking have been totally fine for breathability.

The fabric has held up so far, but I do worry about the duralite zonal reinforcements "de-laminating" or peeling.

Overall, this is a great jacket. It packs up small. It's relatively cheap (compared to 300-600 Goretex and eVent jackets). It's super stylish in town. It's definitely waterproof and breathable. It's fully featured. I'd recommend this jacket as a great all around jacket for most people or as the ultimate lightweight stash coat for those who already own heavier jackets (like the Marmot Exum/Arc Teryx Beta AR, etc).

super comfortable, but missing a few comforts

Stoic Microlith Softshell Pant - Men's

Stoic Microlith Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 2, 2011

I've been wearing these pants fairly consistently for about 2 months now. They are the most comfortable pants in my outdoor wardrobe and significantly more comfortable than other softshell pants I have worn. The interior fabric is super soft and comfortable and these pants stretch and fit great. The fabric is definitely water resistant and works well in light rain and the pants are wind resistant and great for windy days.

2 biggest flaws that I have found:
-There is only 1 awkward pocket so it's tough to carry the items I like to have on hand (knife, chapstick, camera, etc) or keep my hands in my pockets.
-Some of the stitching is coming loose and parts of the fabric are starting to pill after only half a season of wear.

Overall, these are great softshell pants (especially if you can find them on sale). Recommended.

20 days straight and still great

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Stoic Merino Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 2, 2011

I recently wore this shirt for a 3 week sea kayaking expedition in the San Juan Islands and absolutely loved it. Conditions ranged from cool nights in the 40s to days in the 70s with a mix of sun, clouds, and heavy rain. The shirt felt as lightweight and breathed like other synthetic tees that I have worn like (Patagonia Capilene 1, North Face Nemesis, etc). It even dried faster than I expected and was a great shirt to wear under my Kokatat dry top or alone under my PFD on hot days.

The best part of this shirt by far is the odor control. I didn't notice any odor build up until about day 10 and even after day 10 the shirt smelled relatively great given that I had been wearing it non-stop.

This is a great buy especially if you get it on sale or SAC. Make the switch from synthetic to wool or add another wool tee shirt to your arsenal - it's worth it.

If the outside of the mat gets wet, the down insulation will not be affected since the pad is airtight (and thus watertight). If the inside of the mat gets wet (if you somehow allow water in, or breathe directly into the mat (the moisture in your lungs/breath)) then the insulation will decrease. But the included pump should prevent you from breathing into the mat directly and prevent moisture from entering the inside of the pad.
