Sierra Designs Origami 4 UL Shelter 4-Person

I rigged it with a stove jack for the 3lb collapsible Kifaru woodstove. This gives an idea of interior space.

Great shelter if you don't use it much

Sierra Designs Origami 4 UL Shelter 4-Person

Sierra Designs Origami 4 UL Shelter 4-Person

Rating for this product: 2 August 23, 2009

This is a great size for 2-3 people plus gear to really live out of in the backcountry.

I've used the Chouinard Megamid for quite a few years very happily. This shelter was a nice step up in size without weighing too much more.

Here's the problem -- the quality just isn't there. I had the pole collapse under a snow load. After that I used the megamid pole, which is quite a bit sturdier. That worked pretty well until a few trips later when the zipper broke. The zipper is a lightweight little zipper, and I had been wondering how soon that would go. I didn't have to wonder very long.

So, if you want to use it occasionally in mostly nice conditions, it's a good choice. Otherwise, find something sturdier like the megamid or a Kifaru tipi.
