High performance, not so high durability

Petzl Reverso 3 Belay and Rappel Device

Petzl Reverso 3 Belay and Rappel Device

Rating for this product: 3 November 3, 2009

Works great, especially with thin ropes (I often rap on a single 9.1 strand, and it brakes well enough). However, after just a summers worth of fairly light use it is already developing sharp edges like the last version did! AFAIK, this is not a problem with the ATC Guide. Petzl, use some harder aluminum, this thing cuts like cheese.

A near perfect tent.

GoLite Shangri-La 4+ Shelter 4-5 Person 4-Season

GoLite Shangri-La 4+ Shelter 4-5 Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 5 November 3, 2009

After rounds of agonizing research I finally went with this over a Megamid. For 3-4 people this is a great size, and for 2 people it's a palace for less weight than traditional options. If you have dogs, a floorless tent like this is the only way to go. Without the nest, bugs can get in there, but the shape of the tent forces them up to the top so it is rarely an issue. One thing that isn't so obvious from the published specs -- the size is significantly larger than the Megalite (about the same as the original Yellow Megamid, 10 x 10 feet). It also has more tie-outs and straighter walls (BDs bow in a bit), which makes covering a pit in winter easier. My only complaint is that there should be some way to close the roof vents, as they can scoop up a lot of wind. The flip side to that is that you never really get condensation inside, even with a big crew. Eventually, I would like to use a titanium wood stove (like the Titanium Goat) with this by replacing the rear vent with a melt-proof stove jack. Having some way to warm up and dry out a tent in winter would really be an upgrade.

Similar to Beal Joker

Sterling Fusion Nano Single Rope - 9.2mm

Sterling Fusion Nano Single Rope - 9.2mm

Rating for this product: 4 September 17, 2009

Got this rope about a month ago and it seems to be holding up fine. It feels very similar to the Joker that it was bought to replace (which held up well for 3 years of weekend use). The Nano does seem to handle slightly stiffer, and the sheath seems more durable, but only time will tell. It also seems to be slightly thinner than the Joker (which is a 9.1), and every time out I get some kind of "is that a half rope?" comment. The intended use is alpine climbs, long slab pitches, and travelling, where space and weight is an issue. I don't intend to TR or sport climb on it, but I probably will at some point anyway.

One complaint, no center mark. I'll probably add one, but it I would have preferred they dip it in some well-tested rope dye at the factory rather than take a random Sharpie to it.
