PUR fect

Katadyn Hiker Pro Replacement Cartridge

Rating for this product: 5 September 21, 2009

Drop in replacement for my old PUR filter. Used extensively to filter out windblown "trail spice" on Rainier. Find clean snow, melt/boil with the ol MSR, cool pan in snow, filter into Nalgene's, repeat.

A mountain necessity

Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 21, 2009

Only minor complaint regards the reinforced lower section. My crampons did snag (and rip) the upper (non-reinforced) section descending steep terrain. I wish the reinforcement went up higher to protect against this.

La Sportiva Trango Extreme Evo Light GTX - Men's

La Sportiva Trango Extreme Evo Light GTX - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2009

Just summited Rainier in these bad boys. No complaints. My brothers older Makalu's ate his feet for supper (the old bloody sock), but these (still brand new with almost no break in) felt great. My feet on the other hand are hurting (got a good case of X-Mas toe), but I doubt it's the boots fault. More like the 12+ miles with an 85Lb. (from Paradise to Muir and back)/40Lb. (from Muir to the summit and back) pack.

MSR Titan Titanium Fork and Spoon

MSR Titan Titanium Fork and Spoon

Rating for this product: 4 September 16, 2009

Served me well on Rainier. Might have been better off with a single spork (for weight and simplicity), but sometimes it's nice to have something clean while the other is nasty. The threaded cable loop is a little finicky. It can be hard to determine which way is the side that opens.

Not used on Rainier

Black Diamond FlickLock Snow Saw

Black Diamond FlickLock Snow Saw

Rating for this product: 3 September 16, 2009

Only issue with the saw itself is it's appetite for consuming the plastic inside the sheath. Otherwise I'm sure it's fine. Should be able to put it to use this winter when I take the JHMG Avi course level 1.

The bigger issue here is how the saw connects to the BD FlickLock poles. I can only connect it to the very bottom section of my BD Expedition poles (22" long). Since one of the uses for the saw is for cornice cutting, I know I'd certainly like to use the entire pole for this. 22" doesn't give you much unless you're on a mini mountain with mini cornices!
