They have a side zipper on each leg and I had no problems getting them off over my hiking boots. Once removed, the legs fold up to about the size of a large pack of gum and fit nicely in the small pockets of my pack.

The North Face Horizon Utility Pant - Women's

I am also 5'4" and the length was perfect. Probably 30" to 32" inseam. I thought the size seemed a tad on the small side of the true size but they are still wearable and VERY light & comfortable.
