Arc'teryx Epsilon AR Softshell Jacket - Women's

Seems to just be a regular, low loft fleece (probably 100- or 200-weight) with a DWR treated face fabric. I wouldn't count on this jacket being wind proof since they're touting its breathability.

Try the Backcountry.com Shift softshell to save a few bucks. Made out of the same stuff as the Easyrider, but significantly cheaper. I have the men's version, and while I'm not sure I'd consider it insulated, it keeps me pretty warm as long as I keep moving.

The North Face Momentum Fleece Jacket - Men's

It's basically a measure of the insulating capacity and water vapor (sweat) permeability of a fleece. Fleece jackets usually come in a range from 100- to 300-weight. 100-weight is good for staying warm during high aerobic activities (like running or cross-country skiing) in the spring and fall.

The North Face Venture Parka - Men's

November 11, 2009

It sounds like he is usually between a medium and large. Checking the sizing chart for North Face shows that a large would probably fit best.

Sierra Designs Lightning XT 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

November 9, 2009

I'm pretty sure it doesn't come with a footprint, but backcountry doesn't seem to have any in stock. You should hop on customer support chat to see if they're getting any more in.

Columbia Galaxy Groove Pant - Women's

November 7, 2009

Yeah, it's a waterproof breathable pant with a soft lining that will keep the chill off. No insulation, though.

Petzl MYO XP Headlamp

November 7, 2009

Depends on how much time you're spending in cold environments and the total level of performance you're looking for. The RXP is going to be brighter in all conditions (especially in the cold with lithium batteries). Both lamps will get you through a single night no matter which batteries you use, though. Check out Petzl's headlamp performance chart: http://www.petzl.com/files/all/us/products/comparison/headlamps-performance-table.pdf

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

November 7, 2009

Expanding on Kurt Z's response: the idea being that you're not going to try sleeping in a puddle. So as long as you keep the rain off the bag when it's packed and only dealing with some damp when it's unpacked the full waterproof, seam-taped treatment that waterproof shells get is overkill.

The North Face Circadian Paclite Jacket - Men's

November 7, 2009

Yes, sir. For your venting pleasure. But they seem to have gotten rid of the zips in this year's model. Maybe to save some weight.

Julbo Sherpa Sunglasses - Spectron 3 Lens

November 6, 2009

They aren't available on their website but give them a call (800-651-0833) or send them an email (info@julbousa.com) and tell them what you need. I hear their customer service is pretty good.

Julbo Bivouak Sunglasses

November 6, 2009

Julbo seems pretty proud of their "optical clip" system that allows some of their sun glasses to attach to your prescription lenses, so they mention it with all the glasses that are compatible on their website. Doesn't seem like the bivouaks are. The shape of these makes it seem unlikely that they would fit over most prescription frames without some kind of clip also.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Women's

August 20, 2009

JRappGuru means 35 degrees F. -5 C is probably about right for this jacket. Maybe a little on the cold side, but I haven't tried my mens version out in near zero weather yet.

Best value around

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 24, 2009

Fantastic shoftshell. Couldn't ask for more or better value. The interior lining is extremely warm and soft. The exterior does everything I need it to do.

The description is wrong about the pockets, though. There is no wrist pocket or "interior security pocket". Who needs 'em, though?
