The North Face Diez Down Jacket - Women's

January 9, 2011

TNF Aconcagua on the left, TNF Diez on the right. Posting this pic so people can compare fabric. The Aconcagua has a pretty, somewhat satiny, sheen. The Diez looks like a plastic trash bag. Too bad. The Diez has a more flattering cut and better down fill. I loved everything about it except the shiny fabric. Ugly.

YAKTRAX Pro Shoe Crampon

February 18, 2010

I love YakTrax (and the beefier Kahtoolas if it's icy outside) when I take my dog out on snowy trails or hike with dogs from the Salt Lake County Animal Shelter where I'm a volunteer dog-walker.

See my other photo with comments about the Kahtoolas at http://www.backcountry.com/store/cpi/17180/better-than-YakTrax

better than YakTrax

better than YakTrax

Kahtoola MICROspikes Traction System

December 8, 2009

I've been a fan of YakTrax for several years, but after only one hike in the snow & hidden ice, I liked the Kahtoola Microspikes better instantly. They were easier to put on and had more traction. Although I've used Kahtoolas just once vs. scores of winter hikes with the YakTrax, I expect the Kahtoolas to last longer because the bottoms are metal. (YakTrax have thin rubber on the bottom and I've ruined at least 3 pairs of them over the course of 4 winters. They tear when you step on sharp objects such as rocks hidden beneath the snow.) I also hit a slippery section of trail and when I started to slide, stomped my foot into the snow-covered ice and the Kahtoolas kept me from hitting the ground. I'm relatively sure if I'd been wearing my Yaktrax, I'd have gone down.

chose the vest over the jacket

The North Face Thunder Down Vest - Women's

The North Face Thunder Down Vest - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 January 9, 2011

I thought I wanted the Thunder jacket, but when I compared this vest with the Thunder jacket side by side, was surprised to find that I preferred the vest. Strangely enough, the jacket was noisy and crinkled a lot when I moved. Not so with the vest, probably because it doesn't have sleeves so there's less fabric moving around to make noise. Either way, I'm happier with the vest and since I already dress in layers and tend to always be taking off or putting on a layer of some sort, I am starting to appreciate vests more...and they're less expensive.

dumb chest pocket

The North Face WindWall 2 Fleece Jacket - Women's

The North Face WindWall 2 Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 January 9, 2011

I bought a previous year's version of this Windwall 2 and love it. This year's version, unfortunately, has taken the zippered pocket off the sleeve (a genius idea IMO) and put it on the chest. Bad move. What woman wants the bulge of her cell phone, keys, etc. on her chest? Not me. I returned it. Yes, it has 2 'normal' pockets for your hands at about waist level, but the sleeve pocket was perfect for credit cards, small cell phones, etc. and I was less likely to drop something in the sleeve pocket vs. the regular hand pockets because I wasn't trying to keep my hands warm in the sleeve pocket. Also, the bordeaux red color reminds me not of a rich deep red but more of a raspberry sherbet. On the upside, the cut is very flattering (which is a lot of what I love about the original) and the lining is nicer than the Windwall 1. I ended up buying the Windwall 1 instead because it doesn't have the dumb chest pocket, but has the same feminine cut. Unfortunately the Windwall 1 doesn't have as nice a lining, but it wasn't a deal killer.

Returned it - crinkly

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Women's

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 January 9, 2011

I bought a men's version of this, sight unseen, for a friend. He claims to love it, so I bought one for myself. Tried it on and, surprise, it's noisy. Yes. Noisy. It sounds like it's made of plastic bags. Bummer. Was excited to have it. Also noticed that the (dark) Empire Blue looks a lot nicer (more of a jewel tone) on my computer screen than it did in person. Just looked like a boring navy. I returned it. Also, my friend with the men's version reports that the black version is shiny. The blue wasn't terribly shiny, which IMO is a good thing. Who wants to spend $200 to look like a trash bag?

I'm confused by your original statement which says the Thunder is about 100g heavier. I just read the weight for the Diez and http://www.backcountry.com/the-north-face-diez-down-jacket-mens says the Diez is 16.3oz (463g) and that the Thunder is 14.2oz (402g)

GoPro HD Helmet HERO

June 4, 2010

I'm going to (at least partially) answer my own Q. After comparing http://www.goprocamera.com/index.php?area=2&productid=33 and http://www.goprocamera.com/index.php?area=2&productid=29, it looks like the Helmet Hero and the Hero Naked are identical except for what they come packaged with. Both contain the following:
1 HD HERO Camera (5 megapixel)
1 Rechargeable 1100 mAh Lithium-Ion Battery
1 Waterproof Quick-Release Housing (180’/60 m)
1 USB Cable
1 Component Video (HDTV) Cable
1 Composite Video + Audio Out Cable
Warranty: One Year

The Naked comes with 1 Curved, 3M™ Adhesive Mount while the Helmet comes with 2 Curved, 3M™ Adhesive Mounts

And the Helmet contains the following (but the Naked doesn't contain any of these items):
1 Headlamp-Style Head Strap
1 Vented Helmet Strap
2 Flat, 3M Adhesive Mounts
1 Three-Way Pivoting Side Arm Assembly

Maybe there are other differences, but I didn't see them on the site.

Merrell Siren Ventilator Hiking Shoe - Women's

Merrell Siren Ventilator Hiking Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 5, 2009

I like these Siren Ventilators so much, I'm going to buy a second pair.

I've been wearing a heavier-duty hiking boot (the Keen Targhee) for a couple of years, and even though the Siren Ventilator is a lighter weight shoe, the soles on these Merrells provide much better traction (ironically).

I was hiking on hardpacked and slightly iced-over snow recently, and these Merrells performed better than my Keens ever could.

And, as others have noted, these Merrell Siren Ventilators are very comfortable.

Tifosi Optics Alpe T-F480 Sunglasses

Tifosi Optics Alpe T-F480 Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 1 July 23, 2009

I've been a fan (not sure for how much longer) of Tifosi glasses for several years and own about 4 pairs of the Forzas. But I scratched up all my other lenses and they weren't interchangeable, so I wanted something with an interchangeable lens.

These were on sale so I tried them out and am not happy. In fact, I was so maddened by these glasses, I postponed my ride to write this review!

I've popped the lenses out and tried on 2 separate occassions to get them back in, and I cannot get them in.

Unfortunately, I missed Backcountry's 30-day return window on these and am stuck with glasses where I can't get the lenses in them.

I'll probably contact Tifosi directly and ask for an exchange/refund, but in the past when I've contacted Tifosi, their customer support hasn't been great.

They once had a $10 lens replacement plan (maybe they still do) but it's such a hassle: you have to find your receipt (yea right! the glasses are old), print a form off the internet (I have no printer), send it in, etc. I couldn't get thru the obstacle course!

And then some time passed and I contacted Tifosi again, and they said NOTHING of the lens replacement plan, just encouraged me to buy new.

So I still have the 3-4 pairs of scratched Forzas. I refuse the throw them away: they just need new lenses, not to go to a landfill.

Depending on how things to when I contact Tifosi cust service, this could be the last pair of Tifosi's I ever buy, and we'd be ending on a low note indeed.

KEEN Newport H2 Sandal - Women's

September 21, 2008

I've owned my Keen Newport H2s for about 2 years now and have gotten them wet and dried them out many times. 1. I haven't noticed any shrinkage, but I buy my shoes a little bit loose. (These run small). The lace system takes up plenty of slack if you buy a bit big.2. I've compared the Navy colored Newport H2s on this web page with the picture at http://www.keenfootwear.com/product_detail.aspx?sku=510230 and with my own older pair of Newport H2s. I think the backcountry.com image is more accurate. But my shoes are a couple of years old so maybe Keen has brightened up the blue. Not a definitive answer, but my 2 cents.

Would this be good for bike riding? I want a skirt I can wear over my lycra cycling shorts. Since this Satori Wrap skirt is made of nylon, I think it will slide easily and not get caught on my bike seat. But what about the opening? Will it unwrap enough for me to pedal, or is it wrapped too tight?
