Great knickers, one odd note...

Stoic Thrive Lucent Knicker - Women's

Stoic Thrive Lucent Knicker - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 April 28, 2012

Love these for running and fitness! The fabric is a little thicker than other capris I've tried, so it's comfortable and supportive without being full compression. Fabric is soft and seams are flat, and I've been chafe-free so far. Only slightly odd bit is the fit below the knee, which is positively baggy, though it's tight above the knee. Not uncomfortable, just not what I'm used to.

Haven't tried the DWR yet, which was my motivation for trying these.

The back zip pocket is just the size for a key, maybe an energy gel or bar.

They're running knickers, and exactly the quality I expected for a not-bad price. Stoic For The Win!

Everything I hoped for

Stoic Overhang Pant - Men's

Stoic Overhang Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 25, 2012

I bought these for hang-gliding, looking for something that would keep me warm and dry during set-up on those dewy mornings, but that wouldn't kill me when the sun came out.

I took them out today and they came through in spades. It warmed my heart to see the water beading up, and they even survived a rough landing dragged across the ground! One of my friends brought his doberman, and when the dog jumped, his claws made a tearing sound across my leg. "No-o-o-o-o," I thought in slow motion, but never fear, pants were fine!

Mushed them around in the NikWax TechWash and some hot water, rinsed x3 as per instructions, and all mud and grass came off. No scrubbing needed. They look like new. Perfect.

Warm. No, really.

Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie

Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon Beanie

Rating for this product: 4 January 8, 2012

This hat is awesome. My head actually overheats if I take this thing inside. For convenience I flip the ear-flap section up, which helps cool it down a lot.

My only complaint? Completely dorky. This hat is pointy beyond reason (ear flap up gets me comments of "Robin Hood" and "you need a feather"), not sure why, and there's no good way to mash that down. The outer layer points up and beyond the air shield. Wish they made this in just "round".

Work Jacket. Good since 1992...

The North Face ST Work Jacket - Men's

The North Face ST Work Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 3, 2012

At least, that's when I got mine, and I still wear it snowboarding and for general outdoor things. Mine has an Ultrex membrane, haven't seen anything indicating that anymore (too bad). It warms up pretty well, but I do tend to layer for cold days or if I'm going to be out for awhile (I just picked up a MH Monkey Man for exactly that purpose).

Bottom line: This thing's quality. It's held up and still looks like new. Old-school Bombproof. Colors stayed bright, cordura is in great shape. Couldn't ask for better.

Small, light, and really really hot.

Primus Express Stove Ti W/Piezo Ignition

Primus Express Stove Ti W/Piezo Ignition

Rating for this product: 5 December 30, 2011

My first backpacking stove in a long time, I found it on sale at Cabela's ($30! A steal!). I was impressed. More efficient on fuel than the employee suggested. I used it hammock camping for 6 days, breakfast and dinner, sometimes lunch, and didn't even use half the canister. Piezo is easy and reliable. Boils water super fast, even in my titanium pot.

Packs down so small it fits in my Ti pot's included coffee cup, or stashed in my hammock kit bag.

Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket - Men's

Stoic Welder Hi Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 30, 2011

I wanted a winter-weight softshell for rural living and snowboarding. This one gets the prize. The fabric is soft and moves really smoothly, with no pull at all at the armpits or elbows. Even lifting my arms up and waving them about, there's no lift at the waist. I'm 5'7, 140, the M fits me perfectly. The high loft fleece is super-soft, I can barely tell I'm wearing it. Sleeves are a little long, but the velcro at the wrists solves that problem for me (EMS Fader felt almost as nice, AND no wrist velcro).

Haven't tried it in water yet, but outside in this and shorts, with low exertion in 30 degrees, I was comfortable. Not too hot, not even cool. Perfect.

Fit is different

Mountain Hardwear Kepler Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Kepler Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 30, 2011

I'm giving it four stars because the fabric is savvy and this things totally feels bombproof. Serious zippers. Serious fabric.

Unfortunately, compared to other MH jackets (I most recently purchased the Cutaway), this is kinda snug. I know they say softshell, but it's definitely different, with much less stretch and moveability. It's also cut kinda close in the armpits and sleeves. I'm no giant, (5'7, 140, got the medium like my Cutaway), but this thing seriously pulls at my armpits and elbows when I move around. The sleeves are also shorter than the other comparable softshells I've tried (MH, Stoic, EMS, Arcteryx). And there's crinkle. I definitely feel crinkle. Not awful, but this is definitely more firm-shell than soft.

Just one problem...

Ortovox Competition Boxer - Women's

Ortovox Competition Boxer - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 November 27, 2011

I got these to wear under base layers for outdoor work and for under my compressions for working out, and they're pretty nice. All soft and pleasant, and they weren't all sweaty after working out -- awesome. They do stay put, and they're a little longer than many boy-short-cut undies, which I like -- that why I want boy-shorts instead of hipsters. The only downfall I might mention is that there is a band of double-layer wool around the leg, presumably to keep them in place, but it's tight. I opted for the Sm/Med because I'm in Medium range, but the leg band is noticeably snug; while athletic, I'm not huge. Maybe it'll work better for you. Otherwise, I dig 'em!
