Stomping Grounds:
Olympic NP / Mt. Rainier NP / Gifford Pinchot NF / Mt. St. Helens NVM -
Bio:
For years camping always included the amenities of home, which literally could only be transported in the back of a truck. The very first time I went on a backpacking trip I realized that everything a person really needed to stay warm, dry, and well fed could be condensed down into a few basic elements and carried anywhere your legs could take it. The concept of getting more out of life by simplifying things left a deep impression on me and continues to help keep my life in balance and perspective. The unbelievable views of nature, the peaceful solitude, the camaraderie with fellow trail-junkies, and the occasional tests of will and determination are all secondary to the sense of calm I get from breaking life down into its most basic elements and carrying it around with me.
Favorite Place to Hike: Olympic National Park's Wilderness Coast. 60+ miles of pure hiking bliss...your tent right on the beach, the glow of a warm fire, the sounds of the sea, eagles soaring overhead, and the sky lit up like a purple explosion. Man, I gotta start planning my next trip.

You can open up the jacket under the arms and through the breast pockets to keep cool and still stay dry while hiking in the rain. It works too.

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove
October 2, 2009
I have had my pocket rocket for about 5 years. It does not work well in the cold or at high altitudes. When it's cold you can put the fuel canister under your shirt to warm it up but I usually take a liquid-fuel stove on high altitude trips or if I know it's going to be really cold.

Flame control is not bad. Not great if you're looking to simmer because of the narrow flame.

No, but the canisters are very inexpensive and will last for more than one camping trip.

Before you toss it out, put a cap full of Clorox into a bucket of clean water and filter it through a couple of times. Then, take the filter off and put it in the freezer for a week.
