They have good support for your foot. However the coverage is still that of a sandal. I would not recommend wearing these in a gym if you accidentally dropped a weight on your foot you would be wishing you had a full on shoe on, not a sandal.

It does have insulation on the bottom. However their is less of it. It will work fine for side sleepers, either way it will keep you warm.
