Excellent Pair of Basic Glacier Glasses

Excellent Pair of Basic Glacier Glasses

Julbo Tasman Sunglasses - Alti Spectron X6 Lens

July 22, 2009

I know this might not meet everyone's requirements. But I think that these actually work well for an asian face. The primary reason is that the glasses sit high on the nose. And for those of us without a pronounced bridge, that makes a big difference.

I liked the removable side shields. They didn't give me any problems on my Rainier trip.

One thing I would add though, they did pick up a minor weird wear on the inside. I don't know how. Not scratches. But just a slight weird dis-colorization on the inside.

Overall .. great glasses at a fair price.

BD Cohesion on my Rainier Trip

BD Cohesion on my Rainier Trip

Mountain Hardwear Cohesion Jacket - Men's

July 22, 2009

I got the BD Cohesion for my Mt Rainier Summit in July 2009. I have to say, it functioned perfectly. I don't agree with reports of it keeping moisture in. I mean, sure it does a little. But not nearly as bad as I thought. The key is - you have to wear a good wicking layer underneath. You can't just wear cotton and expect the Cohesion to vent.

I'm 5'6" - 135lbs - I got size small and I felt that it fits well. I can still wear it over my soft shell without a problem.

The zippers all functioned well, even under weather stress. The pockets are well placed so you can stow some minimal items. This thing is waterproof. Make no mistake about that. I also have the Cohesion pants and used these to glacade down 2000 feet of Rainier.

Me and Zeus on The Mountain

Me and Zeus on The Mountain

Marmot Zeus Down Jacket - Men's

July 22, 2009

This is a picture of me and the Marot Zeus on the summit of Mt Rainier.

For a thin jacket .. this was really warm. I wouldn't recommend it if you're someone who's "cold" a lot. But for someone like me who runs "hot", it was perfect.

Some basic info: I'm 5'6" 135lbs. I got a small and it fit fine. I was able to wear it over my soft shell comfortably.

The BEST Softshell Ever !!

Marmot Super Hero Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 22, 2009

Ok .. first of all - let me start out by saying that of ALL the things I bought got my Rainier Trip, the Marmot Super Hero Jacket was the ONLY item I went back and bought a spare of. After getting it, I was in love. I'm happy to own two. I wear it all the time.

The jacket is comfortable like no one's business. The material is soft, durable, breathable. Never too hot or cold. I took it on my trip and day in and day out, it performed - AND LOOKED GOOD AFTER REPEATED ABUSE.

I'm 5'6" 135lbs. I got the Small and it fits great! Two things - the arms are a tiny tad long. But that just means you can reach up and not move the jacket. The neck is long by design. This is a huge plus because it doubles as a neck gaiter.

This is a picture of me doing some Super Hero stuff in my Super Hero jacket!

Pretty Basic, But Gets the Job Done

Outdoor Research Verglas Gaiter - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 22, 2009

I got these gaiters for my Rainier trip. I'm 5'6" 135lbs and I got a size Medium as per the sizing chart. I was skeptical at first. But the sizing chart was right.

The material feels a little thin, IMO. But they got me to the summit and back without any problems. So .. I'd say they are worth it.

Not bad at all ..

Mountain Hardwear Cohesion Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Cohesion Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 July 22, 2009

For a moderately price pair of hard-shell pants, these aren't bad at all. I'm 5'6" and got a size Small .. they fit a tiny tad loose, but that was fine.

First - the downside I found was that the zipper snags the fabric a bit. I don't know if I can fault it too much as I'm really rough in storing it. Still, for a brand like Mountain Hardware, I'd expect to be able to pull on the zipper without ever snagging. Nothing to raise a hair over.

The upside .. this was waterproof and durable. I glacaded down 2000' or Rainier wearing these (along with other rough housing) .. and it never failed. So .. take the good with the bad. They do what they say.

Here is a video of my Rainier experience .. the Glacading is at the end:

Basic but flautless

Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Axe

Black Diamond Raven Pro Ice Axe

Rating for this product: 5 July 22, 2009

I got this axe to climb Rainier in July. For self-arrest and balance, its pretty perfect. I'm 5'6" 135lbs and I got the 60cm. I would have preferred a touch longer, since it has a lot of use on the downhill (as well as up). For a basic mountaineering axe it really can't be beat.

To see me using this axe for self-arrest check out my Rainier video:

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

May 30, 2009

Thanks Barry,

We're looking to summit via Emmons route. I should add that I'm not the kind to get cold feet easily. But I've never glaciered.

Also - I wanted a boot that would fit my BD Sabretooth Pros (not Clips) well. Do you think that the Makalu is the right boot for the job? Thanks.

This isn't an insulated boot. I'm wondering, how would this do on Rainier in the summer?
