The BEST Softshell Ever !!

Marmot Super Hero Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 2, 2009

Ok .. first of all - let me start out by saying that of ALL the things I bought got my Rainier Trip, the Marmot Super Hero Jacket was the ONLY item I went back and bought a spare of. After getting it, I was in love. I'm happy to own two. I wear it all the time.

The jacket is comfortable like no one's business. The material is soft, durable, breathable. Never too hot or cold. I took it on my trip and day in and day out, it performed - AND LOOKED GOOD AFTER REPEATED ABUSE.

I'm 5'6" 135lbs. I got the Small and it fits great! Two things - the arms are a tiny tad long. But that just means you can reach up and not move the jacket. The neck is long by design. This is a huge plus because it doubles as a neck gaiter.

This is a picture of me doing some Super Hero stuff in my Super Hero jacket!

Reason this Bag Gets Great Reviews

Mountain Hardwear Ultralamina 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 5 July 25, 2009

I'm 5'6" and 135lbs .. this bag was a tad large but that never once matter. It compresses down to really small wad with the included compression sack. I must add. The compression sack it came with is nicer than most you buy. I especially liked the release buckle. I wish all compression sacks had that.

In addition to the arm zips (which are convenient) .. there is a small storage pocket with zipper. This is really useful for all sorts of stuff you might need at night: eye mask, ear plugs, flash light, contact lens solution.

The bag is warm. I used it on my summit of Mt Rainier in July .. and I can I was VERY toasty.

Its a tad heavier than real down. But its a lot cheaper and has the advantages of synthetic.

If you're interested in seeing how my Rainier trip went. I've got a video up on youtube:

"Very Good". I wouldn't say "Perfect".

Osprey Packs Aether 85 Backpack - 5000-5400 cu in

Osprey Packs Aether 85 Backpack - 5000-5400 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 July 24, 2009

There are things that this pack does well. And then there are things it does just "okay".

First the good. Its well-built and the zippers don't fail. The zippers come with easy access rings, and the teeth are large and sturdy. Everyone keeps harping on how large it is, but for my 4 day trip on Rainier, it was just enough. I routinely carried 60 lbs in it, no problems.

I'm 5'6" and 136lbs. I got the Medium and that fit me comfortably. I have to admit, it wasn't as comfortable as others I've tried, but its amongst the top 3. I think few will disagree, its a comfortable pack. My only gripe on the size and fit is that it does shift a little too much for my personal taste. But maybe if I got the small, that would be different.

Now, my major gripe with the bag is that it doesn't have any side access. With a large bag, its very useful to include a side zipper so you can retrieve things from the middle of the pack. That would have given this 5 Stars in my book. Additionally, it doesn't organize very well. It would have been nice to be able to get some exterior pockets and additional organization.

Still, it did the job in fine style. And I love the color. For anyone who's interested, this is a link to my Rainier Trip video:
