Black Diamond Sabretooth Clip Crampons

October 20, 2010

This was the crux for me when I was about to purchased this crampon, PRO or clip… I spoke to shop guys and it seems that this is more a preference than anything. I ended up with the PRO and find that they are much more user friendly with gloves/mittens as compared to my Gravel Rambo that has the wire toe bail. I have used them for climbing couloirs, general/ski mountaineering.

Backcountry Access Profile 240 Avalanche Probe

Backcountry Access Profile 240 Avalanche Probe

Rating for this product: 5 October 14, 2010

I bought these as a spare for bc trips, incase my friends spaced theirs. I like how fast you can pull the probe together, the glove friendly push buttons in the end disassembles them fast. Quick, fast, efficient and affordable! I have a fancy carbon fiber probe, I won’t say who made it… although it is light and much cooler looking but noticeably not as fast to set up or break down.

Scarpa T2 Eco Telemark Boot

October 13, 2010

I spoke to a scarpa rep, he said that the rocker is lowered by about an inch, they are using Vibram soles instead of something else previous? The plastic is produced through some kind of bean oil instead of petrol... but greener in carbon footprint I suppose. Intuition liners and 3 stage injection instead of 2? Lower buckles are on top of the foot to prevent buckle damages during hikes through talus.

G3 Targa Telemark Ski Binding

G3 Targa Telemark Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 4 October 13, 2010

They do the job…so far… They’re my first tele bindings and were highly recommended at the time. My style tends to be more moderate than aggressive- I like to make lot of short turns. I have friends who had similar issues listed by other reviewers. However, I never had these problems and the only thing I had to change was buying the wedges to make my boot work better with the bindings. I recently bought the telemark adapters to upgrade this into a free pivot touring system and so far no issues- love the free pivot for BC. The only thing I noticed is that the wires next to the heel levers will pinch the boot if you try to crank your cartridges tighter... I don't know if this would become an issue later on.

can't go wrong with this filter...

Katadyn Hiker Water Microfilter

Katadyn Hiker Water Microfilter

Rating for this product: 4 October 13, 2010

This filter is great! I’ve tried branching out to other brands… and have had issues… and seem to always come back to the Katadyn (PUR) Hiker. I am most impressed by its flow/pump speed and ease of use; I think the fastest pumping water filter I have ever used. It does get harder to pump when filter is dirty… But I found that rubber banding a coffee filter to the end going into the water will make your filter last longer- and takes a good amount of sediments out. ***I wished they made a lighter weight and compact version of this filter so that I can pack it for day hikes.

Asolo FSN 95 GTX Boot - Men's - DO NOT USE

Asolo FSN 95 GTX Boot - Men's - DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 3 September 9, 2009

I loved this boot, comfortable, stable and fits great right out of the box. I worked as a outdoor instructor and was outside 5 days a week. I wore the soles out in about 3 months. I liked everything about it except tat it wore out too quickley for a $150.00 boot. 4 stars would be there if it had a longer life to them.

Osprey Packs Atmos 50 Backpack - 2800-3200cu in

September 9, 2009

I have been skiing 2 seasons with it. Skins and extra pair of gloves fits perfectly in the front zipper pockets. The front open pocket can fit a standard shovel but the material is not strong enough and my shovel's corner is piercing a hole through it- I duct taped the inside corners of the pocket and that fixes it. The hydration system has no insulation sleeves so you will have to be creative if you use a water bladders- I use bottles to prevent freezing. The mesh back is nice and keeps your back dry but you can 't really sit on to take a break. The hipbelt pockets are nice for small tools, bad for snacks- it will freeze! In general this pack doesn't carry weight very well, unless you pack light(25lbs and under). The suspension tends to transfer the weight to your shoulders more than your hips. I like it much better for backpacking than a ski pack.
I think it is still a very lightweight and high quality pack that I like but these are just some issue that I am aware of for BC skiing.

Great stove but...

Snow Peak GigaPower Stove, Titanium Manual Ignition

Snow Peak GigaPower Stove, Titanium Manual Ignition

Rating for this product: 4 August 31, 2009

I used this stove on a 300 mile thru hike on the Long Trail in VT. I like how little and user friendly it is. I mainly used it to boil water but it seems to simmer pretty well. You might not want to make cheese fondue in it :)

The only thing I can think of is the lack of wind protection. I should have bought the wind screen for my trip. Overall its one of the best lighweight stove for backpacking.

great approach shoe

Scarpa Expresso Approach Shoe - Men's

Scarpa Expresso Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2009

I was psyched to see this euro retro style shoe that was also technical. The sticky rubber is very sticky but it will mark on hard floors. The shoe climbs really well, I've done some easy bouldering problems and some scrambles it's very precise. The shoe is airy and breaths so well in keeping my feet cool. They do fit kind of high volume so if you got a skinny foot you will need to use a superfeet or custom insoles.

Super comfortable and high performance

Scarpa Skookum Boot

Scarpa Skookum Boot

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2009

I skied this boot all last winter and I must say I am pleased with the its performance. This intuition liner is tongue style, seems to do better in touring than wrap style, very comfortable and warm. This was my first experience with Booster straps and I love them! I used to go through velcro straps like crazy- Booster strap holds the cuff/tongue/liner all together securly. There is no play and seems to make the boot more responsive. Skookum is stiff and powerful I highly recommend skiing this with Dynafits with some big planks to really test the performance.
