Montrail Mountain Masochist Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Montrail Mountain Masochist Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 28, 2011

I have a high-arched, low-volume foot, and I'm in love with this shoe. I've worn it on cross-country runs and some single track trails, and the traction, stability, and comfort have been top-notch. And at the current price, it's absolutely a steal. Doesn't hurt that the shoe is also cute to wear into town. I'm going to buy a second pair while they're still in stock. I'd agree with previous reviewers that this is a good shoe for narrow, low volume feet, or feet with high arches. I bought my normal running shoe size, and they fit perfectly.

Patagonia Active Hipster Brief - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 August 28, 2011

Love this brief. Great wicking ability, smooth fabric, wide comfy waistband. Doesn't hurt that the "fitz roy cerise" color is also very cute. A teeny bit tight at the leg openings, but that's nit-picking. I'd buy again.

Not great for running

ZOOT Seaside Run Tank Top - Women's

ZOOT Seaside Run Tank Top - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 July 8, 2011

This is a cute top, fitted but not tight. Material is functional, if not very soft. However, the hem rides up when I run, which is really annoying. I might use this top for other activities, just not running. I'm 5'7", 135 and the medium fit nicely.

Cute but tiny

Montane Sonic Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 July 8, 2011

This is a very cute shirt, but it was so short I had to send it back. I don't mind shirts being fitted, but I like a little more overall length. I'm 5'7", 135 and the US 8 / UK 10 was very fitted overall, but not too tight, and super short. Again, it was cute, and looked functional, so if you don't mind shorter tops, this one may be for you.

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Light Mini Sock - Women's

SmartWool PhD Outdoor Light Mini Sock - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 12, 2011

These are my favorite socks for trail running. They have awesome wicking ability to keep your feet dry and prevent blisters, and they're the perfect height to keep stuff from getting in your socks on the trail. I will be investing in more pairs.

MSR Denali III Trekking Pole - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 June 9, 2011

My fiance bought me a set of these for my birthday, and they're perfect. They're lightweight, have a comfortable grip, and are durable and handy on the trail. When you're done, they collapse to a very manageable length. Happy to know that, with the winter baskets on, they'll be great for snowshoeing, too.

Go-to shoe for winter running

Vasque Blur SL GTX Trail Run Shoe - Women's

Vasque Blur SL GTX Trail Run Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 June 2, 2011

This isn't the lightest shoe, or the most cushioned shoe, but it's a tank over all types of terrain. It's water tight (in snow and rain and mud), has great traction, and keeps my stride stable and efficient. I've run in pavement in these, but I think they're better for cross country or trail.

sweet hiking shoe

Merrell Moab Ventilator Hiking Shoe - Women's

Merrell Moab Ventilator Hiking Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 12, 2010

This shoe is cush! The first time I wore these shoes was on a super rocky, boulder-strewn trail - the kind of trail that usually hurts my feet. Not in these shoes - comfy out of the box, and they really protected my feet and kept them happy. I've hiked in the Blue Ridge and in the Rockies, and at the end of each day, my feet are never tired or achy. I guess if I could change one thing about them, I'd make them water resistant, but I have other shoes to wear in those conditions. These are great in the summer heat - my feet never get too hot. I'm a big fan.

The North Face Ruckus Angel Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

The North Face Ruckus Angel Crew Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 29, 2010

This has turned out to be a pretty nice shirt. It's a little thicker than I expected, but it's super soft and wicks sweat away pretty well. I used it as a base layer when hiking in Colorado in July, and it was perfect for that. I'm not sure I noticed much of an effect from the mesh side panels, but I'm sure they don't hurt. Unlike a lot of technical shirts, this one fits true to size, which was a nice surprise. Again, this shirt is awesomely soft.

Great energy chews

GU Chomps Energy Chews 16-Pack

GU Chomps Energy Chews 16-Pack

Rating for this product: 4 April 22, 2010

Probably my favorite tasting of the energy chews - I can't stand gu/gel, just grosses me out. These are no-nonsense, taste great, pretty easy to chew (chase with water, as all energy chews). My only bone to pick is about the packaging. It's kind of hard to mess with and open when I'm running. At a half marathon a couple of weeks ago I actually couldn't get that side opening to rip open because my hands were numb. But that's really my only problem with them. They're a staple in my long distance training.

Clifbar Clif Shot Bloks - 18 Pack

Clifbar Clif Shot Bloks - 18 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 April 22, 2010

I'm a big fan of these for my long-distance runs - especially the packaging. I like to cut a package in half so that there are three shots in the pack with no excess wrapping. The three-pack fits easily into my shorts or shirt pocket, or the pocket on my water bottle, and it's super easy to grab it, and bite off one shot. They taste pretty good, too. I consider these a staple in my long-distance training.

Light, but tight and short

The North Face Horizon Utility Pant - Women's

The North Face Horizon Utility Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 March 18, 2010

These are lightweight and do a great job of wicking. I've worn them hiking several times in spring and fall weather, and they're perfectly suited for that. However, like most North Face pants, they are super tight in the seat and waist. I wear a 6-8 in most women's pants, but an 8 in these is tight on me, and also a little short.

Very cute and sporty

The North Face Chloe Jacket - Women's

The North Face Chloe Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 23, 2009

I got this jacket for a good deal on S&C, and it's pretty much exactly what I was hoping for - a stylish jacket that was warm without being bulky. Plus, I didn't want to sacrifice my "outdoorsy" nature just for fashion. This jacket pretty much hits all these points. It has a great, slim fit (I'm 5'7'', 130, and got a medium, and it fits perfectly), it has a good layer of poly for insulation, plus rip stop nylon for water-resistance, warm pockets, is mp3-player compatible, and has a very stylish pea-coat look. The top of the jacket snaps, rather than buttons, up to the top of the neck, which will be quick and convenient for windy days. I got the new taupe color, which is a little darker than I anticipated (it actually looks almost black), and it runs a tad shorter than I anticipated, but not so much that I'd send it back - just be warned if you have a long torso, which I don't.
Note: it has 2 TNF logos, on the chest and the back of the left shoulder - NOT the cuff as depicted in the picture - which definitely isn't subtle, but I don't mind it because it maintains an outdoorsy look whether you're dressing it up or down. I'm looking forward to using it this winter!

These don't taste like energy bars, they just taste awesome. I ate them for breakfast for seriously about 6 months straight. They're a great snack for a hike, or as a light meal when you're stuck at your desk or in the library. It's hard to believe the caramel nut brownie is good for you, it tastes that good.

Under Armour Heatgear T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Under Armour Heatgear T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 July 12, 2009

This is a pretty good shirt for hot weather activities, but I don't love wearing it by itself, first because it runs tight, and second because the material is kind of shiny (I have navy and black, so I don't know what the white's like). I usually wear a medium in most things, and I'm really only comfortable in an XL if I wear it by itself. However, it's a great, comfy (the material is very smooth and silky) base layer for cooler spring and fall weather, under a long-sleeve layer.

A winter staple

Under Armour Subzero Long-Sleeve Shirt - Women's

Under Armour Subzero Long-Sleeve Shirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 11, 2009

I've been using this top for over 5 years now in cold weather activities. As everyone noted, it fits skin tight, but it's supposed to. I wear it as an under layer so it has never mattered to me how tight it is (although it takes a bit to get used to the tight feeling through the shoulders). This shirt is always dependable in cold weather, and breathes really well when you work up a sweat. I bought one in a different color last winter, but my first one is still going strong.

Great for when packing light

The North Face Hammerhead Backpack - 730cu in

The North Face Hammerhead Backpack - 730cu in

Rating for this product: 4 July 10, 2009

I found this pack worked really well in warm weather, when I didn't need to stow a couple extra layers. When the hydration bladder is full, it's pretty hard to fit much in the main compartment. The bungees do allow for some additional exterior storage, so I occasionally stuffed a shell there. Mainly I use this when I just want to take water, map and compass, and a few snacks with me on a hike up to 10 miles. Otherwise I use a larger hydration pack. Overall, I've been happy with this, though.

Perfect hat

The North Face Logo Beanie

The North Face Logo Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2009

I accidentally threw my first one in the washer and shrunk it. As soon as I realized what I'd done, I ordered a new one. I simply cannot do winter without this hat - it's the right length to cover my ears without being too long, it's not too pointy, and the fleece over the ears is so warm and soft. Perfect.

A nice piece of doggy gear

Ruffwear K-9 Dog Overcoat

Ruffwear K-9 Dog Overcoat

Rating for this product: 4 July 8, 2009

Overall I'm pretty pleased with this. It's very well-made and super tough. My dog wears it at the barn and hasn't put a tear in it. The reflective stripe is really visible (great for morning runs), and the buckles work nicely - easy on, easy off. The fleece lining is soft, but hair definitely sticks to it like glue. I like this jacket best for cool wet weather - it definitely keeps my dog dry - but it's not the warmest dog coat available. When it's under 30 my dog still gets cold with this on.
I ended up getting a large for my fairly long Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, and it's maybe a hair short, but the next size up would have been too big.

Nice shorts, but they run small

The North Face Paramount Moraine Short - Women's

The North Face Paramount Moraine Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 8, 2009

These have ended up being great shorts for hiking, but as everyone else has said, you need to go 1-2 sizes up for a comfortable fit. The rise is higher than most women's shorts and pants, but not too high (I guess medium rise), the "regular" length is pretty sensible, and these are also really cute. I'm considering getting a second pair, but I might go 2 sizes up, because I went one size up on my current pair and even then they're a little bit tight in the waist.

My first string fleece

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Fleece Jacket - Women's

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Fleece Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 7, 2009

This is a great fleece: it's genuinely warm, it's fitted (due to the stretchy panels on the sides) yet night too tight, and it's durable. As soon as I tried this one I knew my other fleeces would be relegated to the second string.
I'm not sure this runs small, it's just a neater fit than a lot of fleeces. I'm 5'7'', 135 and usually wear a medium, and I wear a medium in this. If I had a quibble, it might be that it's a tiny bit short, but other than that the sizing has never been an issue. I would definitely buy this again.

Mountain Hardwear Rappel T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Rappel T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 July 6, 2009

This shirt is soft, super cute, and pretty decent at wicking, but it pilled pretty badly under my backpack the very first time I wore it hiking. That's really my only quibble about it. It fits well without being tight, and is a good length, not too short or too long. I'm 5'7 and 135 and the medium is a perfect fit.

Very functional pack for your laptop

The North Face Bandwidth Backpack - 1850 cu in

The North Face Bandwidth Backpack - 1850 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 June 24, 2009

I held out for a while before buying a backpack that was especially designed for class and a laptop, but I got tired of stuffing my laptop and cord into my normal pack. So I ordered this, and overall I've been pretty happy with it. It has a nice padded laptop sleeve (with extra straps to hold the laptop in place, but I never use them because they're sort of unnecessary unless you turn your pack upside down while it's open ...), and fits a notebook and a couple of books comfortably. The organizer pocket works well, as does the (small) outer pocket and the bungees. The water bottle pockets are perfect for holding a standard Nalgene or smaller. And the chord/AC adapter pocket at the bottom really makes it all worth it.

The biggest detraction for me is that the straps, while comfortable, are super wide and look, well, kind of dorky. It took me a while to get used to them. Otherwise this looks like a normal North Face pack and doesn't stand out too much as a "school" pack. Overall, it has served me well in law school.

The North Face Bandwidth Backpack - 1850 cu in

June 24, 2009

I've found that the max for the Bandwidth is my laptop plus two decent-sized books, so it's probably the right size for you. However, be warned, the straps are super wide - they're comfortable, but if you're looking for a smaller look, the straps don't help.

Love it.

CamelBak Helena Hydration Pack 3L - Women's

CamelBak Helena Hydration Pack 3L - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 1, 2009

I LOVE this pack. My boyfriend got it for me for my birthday this year, and the same weekend I took it on two hikes. The reservoir holds 3L, which was perfect for a pretty challenging 10 mile 2500 foot hike, the bite valve worked great, it was easy to fill, and there were no leaks. The pack itself is designed so well - the back gets good ventilation, the straps are in the right place, and all the pockets are really well-placed. There's a pocket with a soft lining for your sunglasses in the very top, a large main pocket (the second day had variable weather, and at one point I had a Precip jacket, a light fleece, and a light long sleeve shirt all stuffed in there comfortably), a well-organized outer pocket, and then a great outside compartment with mesh. Oh, and two side pockets for water bottles, etc. And this is all in a pretty compact, attractive pack. I couldn't be happier.

Perfect

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Women's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 15, 2009

I finally got to break in my PreCip on a hike in the Blue Ridge today. It was around 72 degrees and pretty misty/humid, and I easily stuffed the PreCip into my very small hydration pack. 6 miles into the hike it started to rain, so out came the jacket. It fit well even with my backpack on top, and I didn't overheat on the climbs (I opened the pit zips when I put it on, since it was pretty warm). I was looking for a lightweight rain jacket, and it looks like I found the perfect one.
