Versatile, Athletic Jacket

Stoic Breaker Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Stoic Breaker Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 6, 2011

Second Stoic piece, and I continue to be impressed. 5'11, 160lbs, 38" chest with long torso and the medium is perfect. Vintage is certainly purple, but it's a subtle one I've received compliments on.

It's great with a t-shirt in the 60s, down to the 40s if you're moving around. Haven't done any serious aerobic activity in it yet, but I imagine it'll get some use during the winter months. The hood is a pretty snug fit even without drawstrings, which are on the waist as well.

If nabbed on SteepandCheap, you're not going to find a better deal for a Wind Pro jacket. And yes, the fabric does live up to its namesake with a light, DWR-like finish to repel light drizzle for a bit.

One caveat...the stitching on the inner, left arm is already fraying after a month of moderate, casual use. I'm not worried structurally, just a bit disappointing given the price and how slick the jacket looks.

Good liner

The North Face Power Stretch Glove

The North Face Power Stretch Glove

Rating for this product: 4 January 25, 2010

These are great for liner use, especially under some Hestras. Warm down to the 40s by themselves and holding up well under decent abuse

I'd caution against using them for driving or any other activity that requires grip though.

Nice Poles

Black Diamond Traverse Ski Poles

Black Diamond Traverse Ski Poles

Rating for this product: 4 January 25, 2010

Strong, look good, decently light, packable and adaptable a wide range of conditions.

The pow baskets are sizable, so I'd look into smaller ones if you don't spend loads of time in it.

Wonderful All-Rounder

Stoic Welder Insulated Softshell Jacket - Men's

Stoic Welder Insulated Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 25, 2010

I've rocked this jacket in the 30s with a t-shirt around a campfire, tackling Baldy Chutes at Alta and on a 5 hour roadtrip in the Subaru. The Welder tackled all of it with aplomb.

I'm 5'11, 155, 38" chest and the medium is a great fit. This is a form fitting jacket, but you'll have no issues moving around.

Initially worried about the red, but it looks quite good. Not garish, and the piping is rad...I've gotten Tron references for some reason.

As mentioned previously, the zipper does catch a bit on the wind flap but is easily rectified by paying attention.

Haven't been able to truly test the durability, though I'm less and less worried about the welded seems, the softshell fabric and the lining. I don't think I'm going to be beating the crap out of this thing though.

It holds up to decent snowfall and light rain, but in a downpour, I'll stick with my GoreTex XCR.

So if you're athletic/trim guy looking for a wonderful all-around jacket and especially if you can steal it off SaC, get this jacket.

Superb glove!

Hestra Heli Glove

Hestra Heli Glove

Rating for this product: 5 February 20, 2008

These arrived at my door the day before I flew to Utah for a week of classic powder. The leather palm is great for feel, but you need to keep it cleaned & lathered up with mink oil or something of the like. The liners are wonderful! But only if it's really chilly, because I got too warm after a few hard runs at 32F. Thankfully you can remove & replace them.

A kicker for me, outside of the nice gauntlet, is the "idiot straps" that allow you to take off your gloves without thinking twice about dropping them. Though I cannot count the times my mind freaked out thinking I was about to lose my gloves on the lift.

Great glove. Looks good too.

Nice sock

SmartWool Skiing Light Socks DO NOT USE

SmartWool Skiing Light Socks DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 February 20, 2008

The sock fits well, has the right amount of padding (shins are a big plus) in the right places & despite being thin kept my toes warm during a week in Utah pow.
Only complaint...they have started to look a bit disheveled. We'll see how they hold up.

Close to perfect

The North Face Momentum Jacket - Men's

The North Face Momentum Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 18, 2008

This jacket is wonderful.

If you're wanting to wear it around town, you can pull off the mountain chic look. Otherwise, throw it on over a thin base layer & use it as the perfect middle layer for a week of Utah powder. The 'hand panties' (thumb loops) are great for keeping the jacket from slipping down & exposing your arms when those Utah winds are whipping.

Its look, performance & versatility will have me ordering a second one quite soon.

If you want that 'trim' look, order a size down. I'm 6', 165lbs & the small fits perfectly.
