The North Face Elephant's Foot Sleeping Bag: Climashield NEO

June 17, 2009

Minimalist Bargain
Here's old-school ultralight: This armpit-length sleeping bag reprises a half-length sack once used by European alpinists for minimalist bivy nights. The synthetic-fill bag is meant to be used in conjunction with a puffy jacket, and is designed for the abuse of real-world bivies. The waterproof/breathable cover is seam-taped for total weatherproofing, and the seat and footbox are reinforced so you can wear boots inside, or throw it down padless on a slab of rock.

Suspenders and a perimeter drawstring keep the bag pulled up around your torso and closed. Our tester found it true to its rating when used in combination with a down sweater. He added, "It's so light and packable, I also used it to warm up on winter lunch breaks and to augment an ultralight bag." Just remember: An old-school bivy isn't supposed to be fun. $129; 1 lb. 2 oz.; 40°F

The North Face Backpacking Bivy 3-Season

June 11, 2009

4 days above 10k with constant 45mph winds which kept changing directions and was bone dry. It sits so low to the ground i'm sure higher winds wouldn't phase it. Just point the head into the main direction of the storm.
Only problem was one night/day (i slept alot and lost track, lol) you do run the risk of being completely buried by snow if it "dumps" on you. Ended up moving it so that the opening was at a drop-off to prevent snow falling into the shelter when opening it, even after pushing the snow away from the inside the build-up was pretty hvy those days.
Also after that experience I replace the short stakes with longer aluminum rods I made. Aircraft alum with smoothed out eye holes and paracord loops.

Silponcho or like is necessary for cooking/changing area in inclement weather. Also a waterproof pack system is a must as your gear is outside the entire time.

Sea To Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack

Sea To Summit eVent Compression Dry Sack

Rating for this product: 5 June 10, 2009

I have this same bag and never leaked. You do have to roll the top at least 3 times.
If your's leaks then you should test it by filling with water and check for seapage after awhile.
Two rolls of the top does leak a bit, not alot, just enough to irk ya.

Nice

Exped DownMat Sleeping Pad

Exped DownMat Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 June 8, 2009

and toasty on ice or snow and everything else. By far the warmest pad ever used. Easily the most compact pad ever used, packs pretty small-slightly smaller than 1/2 the size of a standard loaf of bread and is full length pad-stored in my pack now instead of exterior. Integrated pump is nice-take about 40 hand strokes to pump up taut. Easily adjusted to any comfort pressure level. Deflates in seconds and deflation valve mouth actually keeps up when rolling the pad up. Debris falls off pad easily. Easily packs back into included storage bag. Storage bag has nice retainer clip that doesn't allow drawstring to loosen up at all, no extra retaining knot needed. Inordinatly strong-friends daughter along with her little friend and their #10 rat dog actually used it as a snow sled while I was away! I was surprised there was no damage, no streaks or tears as the material is really tough. There is an "UP" and "DOWN" and does make a difference, read the instructions.

Arc'teryx Naos 55 Backpack - 3230-3600cu in

Arc'teryx Naos 55 Backpack - 3230-3600cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 14, 2009

Got this pack for a trip across the US on my motorcycle which started April 1, 09.
I needed something waterproof to weather and larger than the standard motorcycle top cases that are really small. So I got this pack and just strapped it on top of my passenger seat and away I went...after 29 days on the road of which I backpacked 8 days-everthing inside the pack was always bone dry, thats riding and packing through snow, sleet, rain, 130mph winds on my bike with headwinds and 100mph wind with hvy rain. I actually used it to forde..more like swam across a swollen stream 3 times in Utah with the pack as my flotation device, I did use two tiny patches of duct tape at the zipper ends to ensure no water penetration to my map and trail book, not sure if that was necessary but better to be safe than sorry. When I travel motorcycle style I only take a bivy sack which means this pack was always outside in the rain, snow, sleet and sun for 25 of the 29 days and always dry. Only odd problem I had was 50mph wind knocked it over once during a stormy night onto its front and the pack just slide away like a tobaggon pushed by the wind, lol, started tying it down with paracord after that adventure. It was also great when staying at a hotel some nights as you can just throw the pack on and grab the bags out of my aluminum motorcycle side luggage all in one trip. The padding dries really fast and didn't get punky the entire trip. As far as harness fit, the shoulder straps lock onto a retagular patch of ? PTFE? or some kinda hard plastic located about between your shoulders and can be adjusted up and down and sideways which is great for narrow or people like me with wide shoulders. I'm not a professional backpacker but but after several thousand miles of hauling a rucksack around which I hated dearly, this packs really got me gassed up to do some serious backpacking, but, this time in comfort instead of using a pack from the lowest bidding Mil Spec contractor !
