A Great All Around Jacket

Marmot Aegis Jacket - Men's

Marmot Aegis Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 6 days ago

This has become my everyday jacket and I really can't find anything wrong with it. Well, maybe if they used velcro strips instead of those little squares on the cuffs... In all honesty this jacket does breathe well and does keep the snow off. Can there be improvements? Sure, longer pit zips and internal pockets, but, for the price, it's probably one of the best values around.

Finally an ArcTeryx Jacket to Love

Arc'teryx Theta SV Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Theta SV Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 20, 2011

Originally I had the XXL version but, it was huge so I sent it back and got the XL. So far I've been out in a driving rain/blowing sand storm and was dry and comfortable. The GoreTex Pro Shell is as close to bomber proof as you can get. If you are planning on wearing a harness, I would probably steer you to the Alpha SV. Either jackets are in the same league.

Suunto Vector Altimeter Watch

Suunto Vector Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 4 September 28, 2011

Picked up one of these MANY years ago and it has held up through thick and thin. Got a 2nd one with the black face which makes it easier to see if you have polarized sunglasses. Worked great for a while, but, it quit. Replaced the battery and was back in business. Then after a month, no display. Changed the battery again and was good for about a week and same thing. Replaced the battery a couple more times and the same thing. Worked great for a week then nothing.

To Backcountry's credit, I contacted them, told them about the problem and they said to send it back and as soon as I get my credit, I will get another one. It's well worth the price.

Incredible Gloves

Hestra Heli Glove

Hestra Heli Glove

Rating for this product: 5 March 19, 2011

At first I was hesitant to write about these. Mostly due to the fact that these are the best gloves I've ever owned. I've run through several liner/shell type gloves from Burton and even Black Diamond, but, if you want warmth and durability then you got to buy these. Only drawback that I could think of was, uh, um.. come to think of it, there wasn't any. If I had the bucks to spare I would have bought a second pair because knowing my luck, Backcountry won't carry them next year....

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 December 17, 2010

After reading the reviews and deciding to get what was described as "bomber proof," for me, this jacket was a dud.
Yes the GoreTex Pro Shell fabric is top of the line and I have no doubt that you could slide down a mountain with it. But the main zipper was defective?/! ... Got into a serious rain/ice storm and layered up to head outside. After about 20 minutes in a literal downpour I started to feel a cold spot on my chest. Water was rolling off the fabric so I didn't think much of it but after 40 minutes it became annoying. Got inside and noticed that the area around the main zipper was wet. This was a 1st. I've several ArcTeryx items and have rarely been disappointed with the quality, style or function. Would I recommend it to others, I probably would, but, because of the zipper leak, it only gets 3 stars.

Great Hat - Great Conversation Piece

Mammut Baseball Hat

Mammut Baseball Hat

Rating for this product: 5 November 23, 2010

This is a first rate hat. Excellent quality. A very sturdy brim that held together when it got soaked from a recent rain storm. Wore it at the local Marketplace and got quite a few people asking about the logo. In one instance it worked to my advantage since the shop keeper started asking about the logo then filled out my order ahead of a few other folks.

Arc'teryx Atom LT Insulated Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Atom LT Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 1, 2010

I got this jacket to get something a little warmer than the Venta LT and what a great jacket! Lightweight and warmth and the side panel vent like the Venta. I was a little worried about getting a "slim" jacket and it is a little tighter than their athletic version, but, not nearly as much as I had feared. Best part is the my Stingray shell fits over it. Like it was made for it! Now if it would only snow......

Arc'teryx Venta AR Softshell Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Venta AR Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 28, 2010

I really liked the jacket. The only reason why I sent it back was the cuffs. Had it elastic or velcro straps, it would still be with me. Because I like a little room with my jackets, I usually go one size bigger. With he straight cuffs, it looks and feels like I'm wearing my "big brothers jacket." Again, it's a personal preference. Quality is outstanding and I would recommend it for anyone that wears a true size type jacket.

What a great pack!

Black Diamond RPM Backpack - 1587cu in

Black Diamond RPM Backpack - 1587cu in

Rating for this product: 5 October 11, 2010

If you're looking for a lightweight pack that will let you gear up, get outdoors and enjoy the day then this is it. I've used mine for a while now and could't be happier with it. It is one incredibly light pack and whatever material Black Diamond used, wears well. I thought I had mine strapped to the back of my bike, but I dragged it for a couple of miles instead. The shoulder straps got a little chewed, but, nothing worth sending it for repairs. A quick wash in the laundry tub and I was back in business. Can't wait to try it this winter.

Patagonia Synchilla Marsupial Fleece Pullover - Men's

Patagonia Synchilla Marsupial Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 8, 2010

I've had Patagonia clothes since 1985 and loved the way it took a beating and came through like a well made piece of clothing. Lately though I've noticed that they definitely have changed their sizing pattern. I wear an XL and this one was tight and the sleeves were huge. So see if it was me, I slipped on the other 2 Marsupial pullovers that I've picked up from a couple of years ago and they fit fine. (FWIW, I've also noticed this on a Patagonia jacket I got this year from Backcountry and sent that back as well...)
The other thing I noticed was the absence of the little zipper pocket in the Kangaroo pouch as well as the rubber tip on the zipper. Maybe I'm nitpicking, but, the price didn't go down, the fit was lousy and I rather spend the extra money and get an Arc'teryx Apache pullover.

Change of size by Patagonia??

Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Rain Shadow Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 20, 2010

This is a great rain jacket period. I had one for several years and have worn it from a typhoon to using it as a shell with a down vest during the 1st snows. I decided to get a new one and ordered the same size as before and couldn't believe just how much smaller it was. I had heard that Patagonia had changed their sizing chart to reflect the "new reality of human size." If that is the case you may want to think about going up 1 size if you want to have plenty of room to use it as a shell jacket.

Patagonia Fuego Backpack - 1953cu in

Patagonia Fuego Backpack - 1953cu in

Rating for this product: 3 August 16, 2010

When I got this pack I knew that it didn't have a vented panel so perspiration was a forgone conclusion. What I didn't expect was my perspiration soaking through to a couple of maps I had in the hydration/bladder area. You know, I could live with that. After all, it is built to expected Patagonia quality and the fit was much better than any I've tried at this price. OK, so why am I only giving it 3 stars?? The zippers.. They 're lousy. I fought with the 2 main compartments all weekend long. Had Patagonia used the same size/type as Gregory uses, then this would have been a backpack I would have loved instead of sending it back..

Arc'teryx Quiver Backpack - 670cu in

Rating for this product: 4 December 27, 2009

The Quiver has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, for me, I couldn't get used to the the unique 3 point strap design. I thought about returning it, but, my son "borrowed" it and he loves it. The only thing we added was a sleeve for his laptop. Other than that it's become a part of him.

Marmot Flexion Jacket - Men's

Marmot Flexion Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 27, 2009

It's a good jacket for the price. The arms seem to be a little snug so I would recommend going up one size if you want a little "elbow room". I have been wearing it pretty much everyday (except when it rains) and so far, it's done the job.

Way Too Small

Marmot Flexion Jacket - Men's

Marmot Flexion Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 5, 2009

I'm pretty sure that this was designed to be "form fitting" but, even compensating by going a size larger, it is one tight fit. If I didn't know any better I could swear that it was design for a female physique. It's heading back for a refund. Pay the extra $10.00 and get the Catalyst jacket. It's a little heavier, but, the fit is more true and is an excellent 3 season jacket.

A jacket that's in the same league as Arc'Teryx (sort of)

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 28, 2009

As a replacement to my Arc'Teryx Theta AR jacket, the Beryllium seems capable to holding its own. What I cannot understand is why the main zipper is not water tight like all the others found on the jacket? If it was I definitely would have given it a 5 star rating. The flap with it's velcro tabs does protect the zipper, but, you would think that a water tight zipper would have been a better option. On a positive note, the Gore Tex Pro shell fabric seems less restrictive than the Theta. And after a good old fashion downpour, I was definitely warm and dry. Plenty of room of layering and the 2 front chest pockets are big enough for a Garmin 60CSX and the zipper tabs are really nice compared to the "string loops" found on the Theta.

Arc'teryx Solano Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Solano Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 24, 2009

After being somewhat disappointed with some of Arc'teryx latest offerings (don't they make anything in Canada anymore?), I can definitely say that this is a must have jacket. The athletic fit is like having a 2nd skin and it does keep the wind out. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars was the lack of a pocket up near the chest area (either inside or out) to carry an iPod.

Well Done Arc'teryx!

Arc'teryx Blade 24 Backpack - 1465cu in

Rating for this product: 2 August 14, 2009

This is the 1st Arc'teryx item that I cannot recommend to anyone. Although the pack is constructed well and can take a beating, it's hard to get a laptop out of the back and the openings to get files, books, or "gear" becomes annoying. I've already started looking for a replacement. :(
