I love anything to do with mountains. Trail running, rock climbing, and hiking/backpacking are my personal faves. I'm going to do some winter ascents of some CO 14ers this winter, which should be a fun challenge!

Inov 8 F-Lite 230 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Inov 8 F-Lite 230 Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 27, 2011

These bad boys are awesome. Flat out, hands down, freaking amazing. They are really lite, flexible, and sensitive. I've worn them on short runs to 50 milers. They work well on trails and roads.

If you want the specs, look at the website. Know that the show has a 6mm heel-toe-drop, it has minimal cushioning, no stability control. this is a fairly minimal shoe.

I've logged a lot of miles in the shoe, and it holds up really well. I put in about 400 miles, then ran a 50 miler and I noticed at the end that there was a little blow out around the toe box.

The grip is still in really good shape, despite it being sticky-rubber. I've logged about 250 miles on roads, so it doesn't wear out very quickly.

UPDATE: I just got to 500 miles with the shoes, and both shoes have blow-outs on both sides. I've been really hard on them, but i'm a little disappointed that they are breaking down so quickly. I plan on buying another pair though!

GU Roctane Energy Gel - 8 Pack

GU Roctane Energy Gel - 8 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 September 27, 2011

I know these things are expensive, basically $2 a shot. that's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination. But these babies are well worth it come race day.

I tested them out first on a 50k training run, and i noticed that i felt better than usual. I never really hit a physical or mental low. Of course that's not just because of roctane, but still...i was intrigued.

My final test was last week at the VCU 50 miler. It's a beast of a course with 10k feet of vert. I used roctane, chomps, and a few normal GU's. When I took a Roctane, within 10 minutes I could feel the difference. My brain was sharper and less fatigued.

The only thing i've noticed is that they seem to 'burn out' faster than the old GU's. I found that after about 30-40 minutes I had to take in something else. The race went well, I came in 4th.

I strongly believe that nutrition is one of the main reasons I ran well. Roctane isn't a magic pill, but it IS worth the money.

Buy it people!

oh yeah, most of the flavors taste ok. nothing amazing in my opinion.

don't go for these if you have wide feet. Stick with Salomons.

La Sportiva Crosslite Trail Running Shoe - Men's

December 5, 2010

I second the above answer. These shoes hold out for a LONG time. I even put in a 4 weeks of 50+ miles a week on road. I was surprised on how well they held up, and how my body help up by not using "road shoes"

I use them in every condition, for any distance. hands down the best trail shoe in my opinion. I love the low profile, and the impact brake system does actually work (surprise considering all the fake marketing names these days). Check out the skylites for a less aggressive sole option.

La Sportiva Crosslite Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Crosslite Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 13, 2010

these were the first pair of LSportiva's that i've bought, and if all their shoes are like these, then i'm going to need a bigger credit card.

I just ran a 50k in these and loved them. I'm 6'1, 165lbs and neutral with a high arch. i use insoles too.

trail conditions ranged from deep mud, scree, slab, grass, and dry...the shoes were great on everything minus the slab.

The brush guard is nice, and the shoes are great for a minimalist runner. I hate all the bulky shoes like salomon and Pearl. I've owned both brands, and I still run with their shoes, but come race day, it's the Crosslites all the way.

Vaude Fresco 18 Backpack - 1100cu in

Vaude Fresco 18 Backpack - 1100cu in

Rating for this product: 4 June 15, 2010

This pack is like a BMW. Awesome design, with great attention to detail with tons of extra features. It has a REALLY stiff back panel, that vents really well. Adjustable back straps makes it easy to get a perfect fit, although with such a small/light pack it's not all that critical. I use if for climbing and day hikes. It has just enough room for harness, chalk, jacket, some food and water. the shoes can strap on the outside. Definitely not enough room for overnight, or for a complete rock bag. But I really like it, and it's GERMAN. yaa...deutsche

Scarpa Booster Climbing Shoe DO NOT USE

Scarpa Booster Climbing Shoe DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 April 8, 2010

This is only my second shoe, so take whatever I saw with a grain of salt. For sizing I got a 42.5 and I normally wear 44. The fit is tight, and was rather painful for the first 2 weeks. after about 20 hours of climbing they were pretty broken in. Rubber is nice, but not amazing. The fit is heavily down-turned throughout the foot (not like in the solutions where it's mostly the toe) and the heel is very comfortable. Easy on an off, sweet looking, and fairly sensitive. The main thing i would note is that these are VERY aggressive, which means they excel on bouldering and overhanging sport, but are not as good on vertical as overhanging. Great shoes.

I would say either. I own the Solaris and would use it for both, and the Terra looks almost the same. I'd prefer the extra space, so my vote is for the Solaris.

Nope, it's dimensions are too big packed. Even empty the frame will probably make it too tall. I have the Solaris 35 and it is just small enough to fit.

Scarpa Vision Climbing Shoe -2009

September 29, 2009

I'm looking to buy my first pair of climbing shoes, and i'm pretty sure it's going to be these. I'm just wondering how to size for them. I'm looking for a moderately aggressive fit, and i wear a 10/10.5 in Salomon. Any suggestions?

The North Face Chilkats Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 23, 2009

Great boots! I love them! Only two problems: the top lace-hooks dig into my ankles if I don't lace them just perfect. Second, once the snow melts on the boots, it tends to seep through.

Arc'teryx Hardface Glove - Unisex

Arc'teryx Hardface Glove - Unisex

Rating for this product: 2 September 23, 2009

These gloves aren't built for mountains. It's great for around town, or shoveling snow, or scraping a car, but NOT for alpine use.

I used it in CO in -5/15 degree temps, and I got frostnip in both hands. The windproofing is not good, i always felt a breeze.

DWR is pretty good, and leather grip is also nice. However, it's definitely a "mountain inspired" glove.

Also, i paid full price...at the current sale price I'd give them 3 stars...

I love this jacket to death. If I could make it my skin, i would. It fits perfect, breathes, sheds water, insulates, and looks amazing! I've worn this in -20F weather on a run and stayed warm with only a long sleeve underneath. I would easily pay $220 for this jacket. BUY IT!!!

CamelBak Lobo Hydration Pack - 200cu in

CamelBak Lobo Hydration Pack - 200cu in

Rating for this product: 4 September 23, 2009

I really love this pack. I use it for running to hiking. It has just barely enough storage space to last for a long day hike. It vent along the back moderately well. My only gripe is that it's hard to run with because it tends to flop and the straps won't stay tight.

The North Face Solaris 35 Backpack - 2150cu in

Rating for this product: 5 September 23, 2009

I've had this pack for 2 years now and I've done everything from travel to Africa, to summiting 14ers in Colorado, to using as a carry-on when going back home over school breaks. It fits me perfect, but I could see it being a bit small for some taller chaps. It carries like air, and it packs well. I've never had a doubt that it could take hell and not break. The only nice addition would be some sleeping pads loops on the bottom.
