The North Face Hedgehog III GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

The North Face Hedgehog III GTX XCR Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 3, 2012

it's 1 lb 13 oz (size 9) not 1 lbs 3 oz according to the TNF website.

They seem to have solved the issues of delaminating soles and terrible laces which the previous versions were suffering from.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 7, 2011

I returned this jacket, mostly because the fit was too boxy for me (6'3", 170 lbs), other MH products have a slimmer fit, e.g. the Nitrous.

"Mars" not that bright

Icebreaker BodyFit 200 Contour Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Icebreaker BodyFit 200 Contour Crew - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 31, 2011

Just got it in color "Mars". The actual color is not as bright as it looks in the picture, it's more like a "cardinal red".

Heavy

Icebreaker BodyFit 260 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Icebreaker BodyFit 260 Crew - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 25, 2011

This thing is heavy (11.5 oz), so if you are looking for something lightweight and warm for hiking, a down sweater or some synthetic equivalent might be a better option. Besides that, I'm pretty sure it's nice.

Edelweiss Edel Cord

January 10, 2011

Is this spectra? Otherwise it wouldn't be strong enough to be used as part of an anchor.

nice, minor flaws

Backcountry.com Titanium Cookset - 1650ml

Backcountry.com Titanium Cookset - 1650ml

Rating for this product: 3 January 9, 2011

nice and light, although I would prefer having just a lid instead of a pad. I'm probably going to buy aluminum sheet and make my own lid. The handles are removable (.3oz each, two on the pot, one on the pan). It's actually sometimes difficult to fold the handle of the pan back without unhooking it.

The North Face Flight Bivy

January 8, 2011

Can you fit two slim people (each 160 lbs, >6') into this bivy? I don't assume it would be comfortable but I'm looking only for a shelter if we get surprised by a rain storm.

Just a thicker & heavier RidgeRest

Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest Solar Sleep Pad

Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest Solar Sleep Pad

Rating for this product: 3 December 14, 2010

Let's compare some numbers:

1. This pad is 540g vs. 400g for the standard RidgeRest. So it is over 35% heavier.

2. I also don't understand why they claim it's 10% warmer, since the R value increases from 2.6 to 3.5 (also 35% more).

3. This pad is 2cm thick, the standard RidgeRest is 1.5cm. Guess what? Also about 35% more. This basically explains the increase in weight and warmth. The aluminized coating probably doesn't do anything.

4. The only thing which is not 35% more is the price, $25 vs $40, a 60% increase.

The North Face Meru Paclite Jacket - Men's

July 9, 2010

But be aware that GoreTex doesn't work anymore if it's hot and humid outside. Then it will actually conduct moisture into your jacket and not out.
