Arc'teryx Gamma SV Hooded Jacket - Men's

October 4, 2009

No question, go with the SV. The MX is a "toy jacket". It looks great, but it does seem to run tighter in the chest, and the insulation isn't as substantial. The dropped back is about the same and all Arcteryx sleeves tend to run long. One thing though- I can't honestly say that it works particularly well as a stand alone piece if you're looking to stay warm. A 300 wt. TNF Denali over the top will fix you right up in that regard. You might also consider an MHW Alchemy (all time favorite for many years), if you can do without the hood. I'm 6'-0" and 185lbs, and a medium fits me perfectly, even with a light-medium base layer...and...I'm more handsome, not to mention, cool. And, I owe it all to my jacket.

MSR Exo 2 Titanium Pot

MSR Exo 2 Titanium Pot

Rating for this product: 3 October 4, 2009

Sorry, Jeff, but it aint exactly so. I picked up an Exo2 a couple weeks ago and immediately got it out into the field. I gather from your pictures and review of stoves that you're using a Primus Omnifuel. We were at about 10,000 ft with heavy winds and a temp of 15 degrees. We were also beat and ready to eat, as in NOW! My Omnifuel was cranked all the way up and the Exo had about 2 liters of water in it. We got to a rolling boil in about 4 minutes using isobutane, and had the flames licking up one side of the pot in a couple places. My partner noticed that the sides of the pot were distorting where the flames were. We watched it for a few more minutes while we made sure the water was disinfected. We didn't have any burn through or melting, but now a have a couple good sized permanent whumps in the pot. MSR was stunned to hear about this and wants their pot back for study. I can only attribute the problem to the gauge of the metal on the sides being significantly thinner than the bottom (or at least it appears to be). I own lots of titanium- Evernew, Snow Peak, Mont Bell- and of them all, the Exo 2 strikes me as the least sturdy. It may be due to the larger surface area, but any question as to sustainable reliability and performance is not an option. MSR is going to replace the pot, but for a mere 1.5 oz more (and $35 less), I'm wondering if carrying only the 2.5 liter MSR Base 2 is going to be a better choice, both in terms of reliability and versatility in menu options. I hate non-stick cookware, but I hate gear problems when it counts even more.

Klean Kanteen Water Bottle - 40oz

September 3, 2009

Will the 40oz fit into the water bottle pocket on an Arcteryx Bora 80? I mean so that I can get it out with about the same ease as a 32oz Nalgene?

Mountain House Oriental Style Spicy Chicken - 2 Serving Entree

Mountain House Oriental Style Spicy Chicken - 2 Serving Entree

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2009

One of the better meals going from Mountain House. It really does taste orientally, second only to sweet and sour, not like anything teriyaki, which uniformly tastes like dust, even when wet.

Mountain House Rice and Chicken - 2 Serving Entree

Mountain House Rice and Chicken - 2 Serving Entree

Rating for this product: 3 August 26, 2009

It's rice, it's chicken, it fills you up. It doesn't try to be anything else. Let it rehydrate for a while longer than recommended. While not exactly a flavor sensation, it does make the short list a few times a year.

Mountain House Beef Stroganoff - 2 Serving Entree

Mountain House Beef Stroganoff - 2 Serving Entree

Rating for this product: 4 August 26, 2009

One of the best. Hearty, flavorful and filling. although a bit of salt never hurts. A package or two of this always makes it out into the field.

MSR Exo 2 Titanium Pot

August 24, 2009

How will this pot handle the intense, focused heat from a Primus Omnifuel or a MSR XGK EX? Let's assume I have at least a little water in it and the stove is on high.

MSR will send you a new cartridge

MSR HyperFlow Microfilter

MSR HyperFlow Microfilter

Rating for this product: 3 April 20, 2009

I own one of the first of these released. I thought, "great... light, effective, fast. I'm so cool and my butt is covered." But..... It is as everyone says...starts out really fast and easy, then really goes downhill quickly Anyhow, I just discovered, purely by chance (gee, thanks MSR) that all of you who bought before 02/09 can contact MSR for a new filter cartridge. The info is on their homepage but the number is:1-800-531-9531. We'll see if that solves the problem If it can live up to what it once was and the entire reason I bought it, It is a nice little unit. Just in case, I'll carry some chlorine tablets for the summer.

New cartridges to the masses.
