Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

November 11, 2009

For size reference, I'm 5'8" 135 lbs. This has enough room for a baselayer underneath and feels really comfortable. Perhaps an inch short in the torso, nothing to be upset about. Wind proof, water resistant, warm to the upper 30's, tough but flexible fabric. This thing will probably never leave my pack.

Great for winter

The North Face Mountain 25 Tent - 2-Person 4-Season

The North Face Mountain 25 Tent - 2-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 4 November 9, 2009

I really like this tent. In harsh winter storms you'll sleep well knowing you're protected from such a great tent. It's got just enough room for two people and some gear. There's great mesh pockets on the walls for odds and ends (glasses, headlamp, gloves, whatever) and the vestibules are great for your backpacks. However, I wouldn't bring this with me in the summer. It's too heavy and bulky and with two people inside it'll definitely create lots of condensation, even with the vents open. But if you want something to save your ass in high altitudes and in winter storms, this fits the bill perfectly.

Functional

Backcountry.com Siphon Street Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Men’s

Backcountry.com Siphon Street Full-Zip Hooded Sweatshirt - Men’s

Rating for this product: 4 November 6, 2009

This is a really cool hoody - it's got a nice athletic fit (just like all other BC apparel) and the material is thick and warm enough to wear alone over a baselayer down into the mid 30's. It's also pretty attractive casually, though the tight fit might look a little goofy with baggy jeans or something. Anyway, my only issues are that it pills really fast - after only a handful of wears, and there's no waist draw-string. The pilling isn't really an issue for me as I only wear it hiking and the lack of a drawstring isn't a big deal since it's tight fitting anyway. Definitely not worth full price but for 50 or under it's a good deal.

Oh baby

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Backcountry.com Rime Pullover Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 28, 2009

There's nothing particularly amazing about this piece, but its simplicity is what makes it so great. Sizing is the standard athletic cut of most BC tops. For reference, I'm 5'8" and 135 lbs, and the small fits great with enough room for a baselayer underneath. Fabric is thin but warm, and it's not stiff so you can move pretty freely. It sheds light rain well, blocks a good amount of wind, and breathes excellent. Summit Sky is a pretty bright color but at least it'll help me not get shot by hunters.

Good but delicate

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Prime Power Stretch Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 26, 2009

Real nice top. Warm, form fitting, and stylish. Works well over a base layer, as some of the seems tend to be itchy when worn against my skin. The only problem I've had with this is that the fabric is really delicate. A tiny twig can put a hole right through it - as I know from experience. I won't be wearing this anymore without another layer over it.

Good pack, not amazing

Mountain Hardwear Koa 55 Backpack - 3350-3650cu in

Mountain Hardwear Koa 55 Backpack - 3350-3650cu in

Rating for this product: 4 October 24, 2009

I've had this pack for a few months now and I like it a lot but I'm disappointed in a few aspects of it. This pack will keep you cool in the summer for sure, but I found it a bit uncomfortable, even after trying a variety of different ways of fitting it. It creates pressure points on my upper and lower back where the padding is (not enough padding) that start to get sore after a while. It's also not as durable as other packs I've used. Some of the stitching seems to be coming loose, especially in the roll-top cover part where the fabric gets bent around a lot. Another thing to be aware of is the fact that there are two pockets (one on the side, one on the front) that have external access, but aren't actually external - they take up space inside the main compartment. So think of how it feels when you have tons of stuff in your jeans pocket - it just creates a ton of bulk.

Overall I can't be too disappointed, I got this bag at a heavy discount. For ultra-light summer backpackers who don't want to sacrifice features, this is well worth it. I just wish I went with something that was a pound heavier in exchange for better padding and durability.

Nice, but not impressive

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 1, 2009

I wore this thing almost every day last year. It's stylish and a much better value than the Denali that everyone else at my college wears, though it's definitely not as warm. However, I don't really like this fleece for anything other than casual wear. The fit is a bit too relaxed to comfortably wear under a shell (although the waist drawstring helps a bit), and offers no protection from the wind at all. It's comfy when sitting in a cold lecture hall but not when you're a few thousand feet high and the wind is blowing at 40 mph. Also, it doesn't pack very small, in case you were wondering. So basically, it looks super sharp and is nice if you want to jump on the North Face bandwagon and can't afford the Denali. But don't expect this to be a life saver on the trail.

Great!

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Insulated Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Insulated Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 29, 2009

Super warm, light & packable. It's not nearly as puffy as a lot of down jackets, but probably performs just as well. It's best if worn under a shell, as the material seems really delicate and is definitely not waterproof. I wouldn't want this to get snagged on a branch or caught in the rain. Also, it's kind of shiny, which may be off-putting to some, but I really don't care. And finally, it's sizing is a bit awkward. I normally wear small, but was only able to try on a medium. It fit great through the arms and the length was perfect but it was a tad big in the torso. However, after using the waist drawstring, it felt just fine. Overall this is one of my favorite jackets and I wear it whenever I stop moving outdoors.

Backcountry.com Overhang Pant - Men's

August 6, 2009

They're like a mix of dark brown and dark gray. As mentioned above, it kind of depends on the lighting. From a distance they'd probably just appear dull black.

I don't really know what the other guy is talking about with matching to other clothes. First of all, when I'm out hiking I don't really care what the birds and squirrels think of the colors of my clothes. Secondly, they definitely do look great with other clothes. I mean, if all you have is black and brown clothes you might look a little odd, but I wear these with blue, gray, red, and green a lot and I think I look pretty good.

The pants I've been searching for!

Backcountry.com Overhang Pant - Men's

Backcountry.com Overhang Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 6, 2009

These pants are absolutely awesome. I'm usually 29x30 or 30x30 and the small fits perfect. The slim fit is really stylish and comfortable but it doesn't restrict your movements because the material has the perfect amount of stretchiness to it. They breathe well, I wear them on light hikes when its in the 70's. They're also super durable - I wore them bushwhacking through thick vegetation in the middle of the night with no tears or anything. Definitely my favorite pair of pants. I love BC gear!

Solid Backpack

The North Face Yavapai Backpack - 1830cu in

Rating for this product: 4 July 27, 2009

I've been using this backpack for over a year as a school bag and a day hiker, and I've been satisfied with it for both uses. The main compartment is big enough for a few text books and some notebooks, or an extra jacket and gear. Also, the laptop pocket is excellent for keeping my laptop (15" macbook pro) safe. The other compartments are also surprisingly roomy and loaded with pockets for pens, notepads, maps, binoculars, compass, or whatever else. Two water bottle holders may be a bit unnecessary, but it's been helpful for long hikes on hot days. The fit is pretty comfortable, with plenty of adjustment with the straps. The bag is also very durable. I've had very heavy textbooks in this bag, rubbed it against rocks, gotten it dirty, etc and I have no tears in the fabric or seams. Overall this bag is an excellent multi-use bag that will be comfortable and versatile as long as you keep the weight down.

Pictured is me about to ascend Mt. Monadnock in NH wearing the backpack.
