I grew up in Western Washington and moved to Utah a little over 3 years ago in order to pursue life as a professional ski bum.

I couldn't be happier with my decision although I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss being able to walk down to the water whenever I want. ( and no a giant body of smelly water full of brine shrimp does not count)

When I'm not working you can find me playing in the dirt, snow, water, or any place i don't have to worry about the way I smell.

Arc'teryx Miura 50 Backpack - 2746-3356cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2012

this pack is fantastic. some people have complained about the way this racks your gear but i love the feature. it racks sideways so that you can then basically flip everything outwards and select what you need. the ability to turn this into a chair is also awesome. i can fit my 60 m rope, all my gear, food, and water for a day with absolutely no problems.

i'm about 6'2" and 170 lbs. with a 20-21" torso. the tall size fits me perfectly.

Black Diamond HoodWire Carabiner

Black Diamond HoodWire Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2012

so you had all these great BD wiregate biners and you said "there's no way BD can improve on these babies." fortunately a BD engineer was in the room with you and accepted your challenge. sometime later...voila! the Hoodwire was born! this is one of those things that you really only notice when you switch back to using a different biner. then you notice how much more functional these ones actually are. just buy one a couple and try them out, you'll notice an improvement.

Wild Country Pro-Key Nut Tool

Wild Country Pro-Key Nut Tool

Rating for this product: 5 May 20, 2012

there's really only a few things i need when looking for a nut tool. gotta be strong enough that it doesn't seem flimsy and i need a palm guard so i can smash my hand against something when i get frustrated with that one piece that just won't come out. this tool has both of those and then they went and added something even more awesome. the little lanyard keeper thing seems kinda goofy but it's actually really handy. makes perfect sense since pretty much everyone i know has to attach a piece of cord to their tool when they're using it anyway. they're one step ahead!

K2 HellBent Ski

April 29, 2012

these skis are going to be heavenly in powder, okay on groomers, and terrible on ice. obviously there are going to be plenty of people who will disagree with me and tell you that they ski their hellbents every day on ice all the time. i'm not saying you can't do that, just that the skis are not designed for that and there are better options if that's what they're going to be used for primarily. if you're looking to ski mostly powder...great choice.

by most traditional standards that would be a bit long for your size. however there's really not all that much about this ski that puts it into a traditional category anyway. you're certainly not going to be skiing tight trees with them any time soon, but if you want them to slay big, steep lines, i'd say go for it.

Greys GS Scoop Net

Rating for this product: 5 April 18, 2012

this net is great. it's small enough that it can easily be lugged around without becoming any sort of a hindrance. the rubber mesh is nice since it won't damage the fish nearly as much as a nylon mesh. wish i could say that it's not durable enough to handle my fish but so far that has not been the case.

Redington Skagit River Wading Boot - Sticky Rubber - Men's

Redington Skagit River Wading Boot - Sticky Rubber - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 18, 2012

I just got these boots and have only been able to use them once. so far they seem quite comfortable. I'm normally a 12 in street shoes and anything else so went with that. even with waders on they seem to be perhaps a tad loose. i probably could have gotten away with an 11 1/2 but it's not bad enough to warrant any sort of action.

i certainly didn't have any problems with sliding around while wearing this boot. they definitely gave me all the traction i needed for the Provo river out here in Utah.

if I have occasion to put some spikes on them and use those i'll update with how that goes.

Five Ten Moccasym Climbing Shoe

Five Ten Moccasym Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 April 18, 2012

This was the first pair of climbing shoes I even owned and i've recently come full circle. I wasn't sure which pair of shoes to get so on a whim I bought another pair of these and I can't remember why I ever stopped wearing these. You'll definitely want to go about a full size down as they will stretch out a bit. I wear a size 12 in street shoes and just about everything else and I went with an 11. It's pretty tight but they're not too bad and once they stretch out just a tiny bit they should be just right.

highly recommend this shoe for just about anything.

love this jacket

MontBell Thermawrap Insulated Guide Jacket - Men's

MontBell Thermawrap Insulated Guide Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 18, 2012

I bought this jacket as a replacement for the Mountain Hardwear hooded compressor jacket. I also really liked that jacket. As far as the fit goes. I'm about 6'2" and about 170 lbs and the large fits me really well. I initially tried the XL but the sleeves were too long ( I have pretty long arms even) and I just felt like I was swimming in the jacket.

This is a little thicker and warmer than the compressor. One feature that I love is the neck of the jacket zips up independently of the hood. That way you can keep your neck warm without being forced to wear the hood. Also has plenty of pockets for just about anything I could want.

Metolius T-Nut Bag

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2012

nice review title, right? there's really not much to say about these. i used about 400-500 of them on my home wall and they all work just fine. the only thing i would say is that unless you spend a TON of time when you're initially putting them in, you're going to have a few that come out kinda crooked. just take a long bolt and carefully thread it in then pull on it real hard a few times. that will reseat the nut in the wall and allow you to easily screw on your hold. so far i've had no problems with these whatsoever.

great suit but...

Stoic Merino 200 1-Z Suit - Men's

Stoic Merino 200 1-Z Suit - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 31, 2012

Stoic almost hit it out of the park with this one. The suit itself is awesome. Great construction, warmth, comfort, everything you could ask for as far as the way the suit functions. The only drawback, and what lost a 5-star rating from me, is the lack of a buttflap. It's true that it's generally not THAT big of a problem but, for the cost it wouldn't have been that hard to put one on there. i actually cut my own flap and sewed velcro on which has really made it fantastic. if you go that route, just make sure to sew the velcro high enough up that you're not sitting directly on it when you're sitting down.

sizing: i'm about 6'2" and 165-170 and the large fits me great. at first i thought it was too baggy but once i cinched up the waist strap it fits great.

Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro Shell One-Piece Suit - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2012

I love this suit. I was a bit hesitant to drop the money on this but i'm very glad i did. i was initially only planning to use it for riding on storm days but found myself enjoying being all wrapped up in my invincibility suit. however for its intended purpose, storm/powder days, there is nothing that beats this suit.

sizing: i'm 6'2, 6'3 on a good day and about 165-170 lbs. The large fits me great. Plenty of play to move around in but not so much that I'm swimming in the suit.

Oh and the thumb gaiters are a great touch.

this thing is perfect for me. i don't like to put my actual bills into a wallet and so haven't needed a wallet in years. i was getting tired of keeping my various cards loosely in my pocket so decided to try out one of these. very glad i did. i can comfortably fit about 6-8 cards in the outer pockets and another couple on the inside. initially i was worried that the inner straps were a bit loose and things would fall out. once i put a few things in there though they worked out just fine. as an added bonus the inner pieces are like a magical jacob's ladder and are guaranteed to amaze your slightly more inebriated friends.

Fox River Mammoth Sock

Fox River Mammoth Sock

Rating for this product: 4 January 31, 2012

These socks are great. They're not quite as thin as I would have liked but they work just fine for the slightly colder days. They're a little thicker than the comparable pairs from Darn Tough and EURO socks. The only other thing is that the front-padding is not as anatomically fit as some other brands so it tends to feel just a tad bulky in my boot. Really not much of an issue though. Smith I/O Interchangeable Optics Spherical Series Goggles

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2012

These things have amazing field of vision. I was previously using the Smith Phenom goggles. I honestly don't feel that the lenses are really any easier to change in and out than were the Phenoms. This could be because I was used to those ones. Either way, it's more a matter of both of them being really easy than one being better in that respect. Where these things really shine is their optical quality and field of vision. I love Smith goggles and these have done nothing to change that opinion.

Smith Skullcandy Single-Shot Helmet Audio Kit

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2012

I love skiing with music. For some reason I can't ski with ear buds in my ears. It seems to affect my balance. Having these however is great because i have music rockin' and i can still hear my skis on the snow and other things around me as well. I had the older version which were just the pads with speakers permanently in them. I think these ones are a big improvement. The integration is smoother, my old plugs would sometimes come out. Additionally the button to stop the music/hang up the phone is much less likely to accidentally get pushed than was the previous model. I'm using these with the Smith Maze helmet.

Black Diamond Chaos Harness

Black Diamond Chaos Harness

Rating for this product: 4 January 31, 2012

the ONLY reason that I didn't give this harness a 5-star review is the non-adjustable leg loops. if I were using this strictly for the summer or indoors then this would have worked out great. the harness is ridiculously comfortable. the non-adjustable leg loops just weren't going to cut it for me though as i wanted to be able to maybe wear some warmer clothing at times. i ended up going with the BD Aspect instead. I'm about a 33 in waist and the waist sizing on the medium was just great. fully recommend this harness if you're not going to need to worry about the adjustable leg loops.

boils soup in just under 35 seconds

MSR SuperFly Stove

MSR SuperFly Stove

Rating for this product: 5 September 18, 2011

i have had this stove for going on about ten years now. It's been my go-to stove for almost all my backpacking adventures. i just now used it to heat up a can of soup for my lunch break at work. i timed the boil time of the soup, just out of curiosity, and was pleased to see it reach a nice roiling boil in about 35-40 seconds. i usually take one 8 oz canister with me for up to a 3-5 day trip and have never really run out while in the backcountry. after ten years my stove is still in great condition as well. it has the usual slight discoloration on the supports from being subjected to high heat for so much time. that certainly hasn't affected the performance one iota. i will continue to use this stove until it breaks, at which point i will promptly buy another one.

Arc'teryx Rho AR Bottom - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 13, 2011

The title really says it all for me on this one. I got these about 4 years ago and have skied roughly 75-110 days each year in them since. They show barely any signs of wear and are still as comfortable as the day I put them on. I am about 6'2" and about 170 lbs. I tend to wear larges in most pants but got these in a medium for that nice snug fit. It made the legs a tad high above the ankles which is just fine for skiing. Definitely recommend to anyone who needs a midweight long underwear.

So much fun...i mean useful. I haven't actually gotten to throw this at very many things yet. Turns out that when living in an urban area people frown upon walking around throwing axes at things. However I did use this for some vigilante pruning the other night and it worked wonders. it's a bit too heavy if i were taking it backpacking but this is definitely a must for all other camping/outdoor adventures. i also feel more secure having this around for when the Zombocalypse occurs.

at first i was a bit worried that this wouldn't be particularly functional, due to its small size. those fears were put to rest the first time I used it however. it's about 3.5" by 5" or so. those are definitely not exact measurements. as someone had previously mentioned, it works great as a base for a stove or anything else you need to rest on a flat object. I like how lightweight this is as well. really makes preparing food in the backcountry more enjoyable. fully recommend this product.

weird shape...great function

MSR Insulated Stainless Steel Mug

MSR Insulated Stainless Steel Mug

Rating for this product: 5 August 8, 2011

I'll admit, this cup has a weird shape that took a little getting used to. However it does do everything it is supposed to do, very well. As hot as I could get my coffee I still could barely even feel it through the insulating sleeve. It's quite light and seems to be pretty durable. (I haven't yet tried the accidentally running it over test) It is also very convenient for putting my various spices in when hiking. I'll definitely be buying another one of these in the near future.

GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless Percolator

GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless Percolator

Rating for this product: 5 August 7, 2011

I busted this out on a recent camping adventure and was extremely pleased with the results. It's really easy to use. There are little dashes inside the container showing lines for filling for either 4 or 6 cups at a time. The coffee was great though slightly on the weak side. I attributed this to the fact that I didn't let it do its things for quite long enough. Washing this beast is a breeze. All the pieces come apart for extremely easy cleaning and it is dishwasher safe which is always nice.

GSI Outdoors Salt and Pepper Shaker

GSI Outdoors Salt and Pepper Shaker

Rating for this product: 5 August 7, 2011

It's a salt and pepper shaker. I've only used it a few times but I certainly have nothing bad to say about this little guy. The caps seem to stay on snugly when being rattled around in my pack or car.

if you're gonna pass out after too much sangria...it might as well be in this hammock

Hammock Bliss Triple Hammock

Hammock Bliss Triple Hammock

Rating for this product: 5 July 31, 2011

this hammock is awesome. it's become pretty much a permanent road-trip partner for me. i took this all up and down the coast of california and used it everywhere i stopped. whether curled up with a good book or something cuter and less educational, this hammock does the trick. i was a bit worried that it might be even too wide. the first time i set it up (which was a snap) all my fears on that matter were immediately put to rest. it feels great to sink down into the hammock and curl the sides up around you. all in all. can't say enough good things about this hammock. buy one.

great, comfortable fit

Arc'teryx R300 Harness - Men's

Arc'teryx R300 Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 10, 2011

This harness is great. Truthfully I have yet to have a chance to try it in the field but I am very impressed so far. When I first put the harness on I was impressed by how snug everything stayed around my body. Harness companies are always touting their new harnesses as "so comfortable you'll forget you're wearing it." this is the first time I've ever actually thought that. the warp-strength technology really enables them to make a harness that lies flat, I can only imagine how comfortable it would make this harness for a day of ski-touring or all-day cragging.

not too shabby

ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxer Brief - Men's

ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxer Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 19, 2011

These are really nice. To be honest they fit much more like a pair of boxers than a pair of boxer briefs. That being said, I may have accidentally received the boxers and not checked very closely. The materials and construction are still both top-notch and I have no trouble recommending these to anyone. I have worn them for a few days at a time and haven't noticed any problems with funk. If you want a somewhat looser-fitting pair of boxer briefs then definitely give these a whirl.

pretty sweet shorts

Patagonia Capilene 1 Boxer Brief - Men's

Patagonia Capilene 1 Boxer Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 19, 2011

These shorts are really nice. The quality is everything you'd expect from Patagonia. Great construction and materials. Super soft. The fit is great although it's not quite my style. They run fairly short. If that's what you're looking for then these would be great. I prefer the Stoic Merino Boxer Briefs just because they have a bit longer cut to them. Again this is not really a reason for complaint, more just a preference thing. Highly recommend if you don't mind a slightly short cut.

Stoic Merino Boxer Brief - Men's

Stoic Merino Boxer Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2011

I just got these things last night and am pretty sure I'm never going to take them off. Although to any ladies out there that are reading this, yes I do change my clothing on a regular basis. That being said, these are probably the most comfortable boxer briefs I've ever worn. Some other people had said that there was a problem with a bit too much sag in the *ahem* crotchal region. I actually have not noticed this at all.
For sizing reference: I'm about 6'2", 6'3" on a good day, and about 170 lbs. I ordered a medium and they seem to fit great. They are definitely somewhat long in the legs but because they are nice and snug they don't ride up and bunch up as some other boxer briefs I've had. If you're on the fence about sizing go with the smaller of the two options you're thinking since they are a nice, somewhat stretchy material.

Hestra Seth Morrison Pro 3-Finger Glove

Hestra Seth Morrison Pro 3-Finger Glove

Rating for this product: 5 January 6, 2011

these gloves are it. i should think with the credentials of the top review on these beasts there should really be no question in anyone's mind but, just thought i'd throw my two cents in the mix. i've tried any number of gloves; dakine, bd, swany, marmot, etc. and these gloves are far and away my favorite of the bunch. they are ridiculously warm and i have yet to feel discomfort when wearing them. i've ridden them so far on a couple days where, with wind chill, the temps reported were about -30ish. let's just say the rest of my body was wishing it had a giant Hestra Seth Morrison Pro Model 3-Finger Glove to crawl into and hide. the only reservation i had going into the purchase of these gloves was an expected loss of dexterity. when the winds get going up at hidden peak it can suck to fiddle with clipwires and the like. especially when it's a mad dash to get strapped in and be the first to taste that sweet Snowbird powder. the very first day i used these i actually found myself forgetting that i had a lobster claw instead of my normal hand. apparently my last couple fingers have not been pulling their weight this entire time at all. either way, loss of dexterity should definitely not be a consideration when looking to purchase these gloves.

Bottom Line: _____________(insert your own term for the only gloves you'll ever want to wear again)
