La Sportiva Lynx Trail Running Shoe - Men's

February 21, 2010

I have read that this shoe runs slightly small. I usually wear size 11, but some brands are a bit big in that size (Lafuma) while others fit well (Montrail). I am wondering if anybody else has noticed that these run small? Should I buy a size/half size up?

Sierra Designs Hurricane Jacket - Men's

Sierra Designs Hurricane Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 6, 2009

this guy kept me bone dry during the maroon bells' monsoon season while doing the 4 pass loop, and for that I am grateful. i use this jacket far more often than i expected to, and believe it a great jacket for the price. the only complaints (and why 4 not 5 stars) is that the hood is quite small, and and DWR seems to be wearing off quickly. 6'2" 175 and the large fits well, maybe a bit baggy, but nice for layering underneath...

Kelty Makes Great Packs!

Kelty Coyote Backpack - 4750cu in

Kelty Coyote Backpack - 4750cu in

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2009

Durable. Versatile. Affordable. These words come to mind when asked to describe the Coyote 4750 backpack by Kelty, but they, and others, could be summed up with one word above all: Value. One of the grizzled veteran packs of Kelty’s popular Trail series, the Coyote has been around long enough to establish itself as a solid and dependable long weekend or weeklong pack and comes at a great price on top of that. The feature of the Coyote that stands out most, in this tester’s opinion, is its adjustability and versatility in terms of size and space. There are numerous straps that allow smaller (weekend) loads to be cinched down tight, and awkward loads to be accommodated without making the wearer suffer, yet it expands right back out to a full-size weeklong pack in just a few tugs. That flexibility is what most makes this pack such a great value: it really can take the place of two or even perhaps three packs with its large range of effective sizes. Beyond its multitude of sizes, the pack is just solidly built and ready for action. The Cloudlock 2 suspension keeps the load snug against your body but still allows a breath of fresh air to reach those nasty sweaty spots on your back. The pocket placement is also very intuitive and handy. The Coyote is incredibly durable and is sure to last the user a long time: a friend has a Coyote from a few years back and lived out of it in South America for a couple months and it still looks like new despite numerous trips since! Finally, with a list price of $160 this pack has a great price attached to it. Don’t let the seemingly “cheap” price fool you though: this pack means business and will keep you happy for a long time…

MSR Skinny Too Tent 2-Person 3- Season

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2009

MSR has a sweet little tent in the skinny too. it is light, it is nice and roomy, and it is well-priced. i would say you can't go wrong with it. biggest beef i had is that it is single wall, so no stargazing through the ceiling, but when the weather rolls in you'll be glad you had this guy. longest i used it for was a pictured rocks through-hike, and i hardly even noticed it was in my pack. great buy!

Lafuma XLight Mid OT Hiking Shoe - Men's

Lafuma XLight Mid OT Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2009

This shoe is an excellent hiker, and should make any owner happy. There is a reason is got best overall hiking boot/shoe from Backpacker magazine... This thing is really, really comfy and fits your foot like a glove. It feels light, and the Vibram performs well. The OutDry seems to work very well, though I haven't soaked it totally yet. One thing to note, for people who shop by look, it is chunkier than it looks, but I would say the "order half-size up" is accurate. Also, the coloring (at least in Dark Earth) is darker than that picture looked, but that doesn't really matter if you're just looking for performance (as I was). The only thing I remain skeptical on is the lacing...we'll see if the cords last.

Great hat for the price!

Backcountry.com Himal Beanie

Backcountry.com Himal Beanie

Rating for this product: 5 October 13, 2009

I got the green one, and loved it right from the get-go. For $15, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better hat. The wool is thick and comfy, but still breathes out of the unlined top so you stay warm, but not too warm. I have had it out in the early season snow up here in the Keweenaw, and my head is excited to have a new friend for the winter! Hooray for BC!

p.s. the sherpas made my pom-pom extra big...and it's awesome!

Big Agnes Air Core Sleeping Pad - Mummy

August 31, 2009

Is it necessary to use this pad with a BA sleeping bag? I have not used BA equipment before, but it seems like they design their stuff so you use one of their pads in one of their sleeping bags. If I want to use only the pad under a sleeping bag I already have, do you foresee me having problems?

Thanks!
