Backcountry.com Dreamland T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

This shirt definitely fits true to size, if not just a little bigger than average mediums. I float in the Medium + range. Most mediums fit me just fine, but some are just a hair too tight. This shirt fits me perfectly. Oh yeah, and I'm 5'10, 170.

Awesome Bag!

Osprey Packs Torque Courier Bag - 1200cu in

Rating for this product: 5 October 7, 2009

I've had this thing for about 2 weeks now and I love it. Before I was carrying a laptop case and a backpack. Now I have consolidated everything into just this bag. It all fits great! The bag is also very comfortable. It sits very nicely on my shoulder and when I have it full, the waist belt comes in very handy. I carry a ~15 inch Dell laptop (with a battery that sticks out about an extra 1/2 inch). It fits in there perfect. Though as far as height goes, there is not much room to spare with the bigger battery. Did I mention that it is stylish? Overall, I would highly recommend this bag. Get it now! What are you waiting for?

Ex Officio Give-N-Go Sport Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 30, 2009

These things are great. I have spent several days in them at a time and they have always performed well. They dry really fast and they do a great job at wicking moisture away from your skin. They are also much more comfortable than boxers or traditional cotton underwear. Do not go without these!!

This headlamp has been great. It is very bright and takes forever to run the battery out. It also has some neat little features, all with just 1 button. I highly recommend this headlamp. I do not leave without mine, even on day hikes!

Coleman Insta-Clip 2 Accordion Tube Shape Mantles - 2 pk

June 12, 2009

Gary, I ran a quick search and found that the Coleman Pinnacle latern requires Coleman Model 2000 Mantles. Cabela's looks to be the easiest place to find those exact ones.

These mantles here on Backcountry appear to be very similar but are not the exact ones that I found to be recommended.

You can not go wrong using this pot set to cook for big groups. The anodized aluminum is great because it is light, distributes heat well, and the anodized coating make it very durable. Another great MSR product.

Great Pants!

Mountain Hardwear Mesa Convertible Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Mesa Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 29, 2009

I just recently picked up these pants and used them on a 10 day hiking trip in Utah. These pants did a very good job. The are very lightweight and did a great job at keeping me cool, even in the high temperatures of the desert. I purchased a size medium because I have a 32" waist. They ended up fitting just right. If I was much bigger they wouldn't have fit. Also, I have fairly large quads and a bigger than average butt (it is a blessing and a curse). These pants were borderline too tight for me around the leg. Overall, these are great pants. Buy them!!

Lose a good night of sleep that is. This mattress is SWEET! It is very comfy and does a great job keeping you warm. You can't go wrong with it. I would not recommend putting it in/on a pack (it is not the lightest). It travels great from your car to your tent though!!

Cheap Light in Your Tent!!

Coleman 8D Pack-Away Lantern

Coleman 8D Pack-Away Lantern

Rating for this product: 4 May 14, 2009

This is a cheap and easy light that is safe to use in your tent. I alway take this with me when I am car camping (never when I am backpacking though, because it is HEAVY). The light portion of the unit slides up and down to save room when not using it. It has 2 brightness settings and does an awesome job at keeping the tent lit up. There are much better quality lights like these out there, but this is a cheap purchase that has done a great job times the many times I have used it.

Great for Large Groups

MSR Alpine 4 Stainless Steel Pot Cookset

MSR Alpine 4 Stainless Steel Pot Cookset

Rating for this product: 4 May 14, 2009

This is a nice pot set. It is great for larger groups and is very dependable. Having more than one stove would help to get things done much faster with set. You can use them to cook anything. The pot grabber is actually fairly stable, as I have used it to handle the pot when it was full of boiling water and I did not have any problems. The biggest drawback to this set is the extra weight of stainless steel. I have not heard great things about heating aluminum too hot and titanium is too expensive. This is the best of both worlds.

This is a nice pot set. It is very dependable. You can use them to cook anything. The pot grabber is actually fairly stable, as I have used it to handle the pot when it was full of boiling water and I did not have any problems. Everything fits nicely into the biggest pot (including my MSR Whisperlite stove). The biggest drawback to this set is the extra weight of stainless steal. Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Ridge Rest Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 4 May 8, 2009

This sleeping pad is simple but it definitely gets the job done. It is easy to roll up and put on the bottom of your pack. Although it may not be as comfortable as the other pads you put air in, it is cheaper, less hassle, and you never have to worry about having a leak. It also does a great job at keeping you warm while laying on a cold surface. Simplicity rules!!

Great Bag, Great Price

Mountain Hardwear Switch 20 Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

Mountain Hardwear Switch 20 Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2009

You can not beat this back for the price. I have used mine on countless nights with temps varying from ~25 degrees all the way to ~75 degrees. In the cold it does an excellent job at keeping warmth in. I've never been cold in it (I always wear a thermal top and bottom though). In warmer months it is still great because it vents very well and can actually help to keep you cool. I have had some minor trouble with the zipper on just one occasion, but it wasn't a big deal at all.

MSR Fuel Bottles

Rating for this product: 5 May 7, 2009

MSR makes a great product. This is no different. Although it is something as simple as an aluminum bottle, it is important that you get something that is made well. This bottle doesn't leak, is VERY sturdy, and you can put cool stickers all over it! I wouldn't recommend any other fuel bottle.

Great Stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 4 May 7, 2009

This is a great stove for all sorts of backpacking trips. It is a step up from its brother, that only burns white gas. This stove will burn multiple fuel types. It is easy to use, easy to repair/maintence, and boils water pretty quickly. It is also nice because you can adjust the size of your flame so you are not scorching your dinner! The main drawpack to this stove is that you must carry a bottle of white gas with you. This adds weight and often times makes a mess. Oh yeah, it takes some time to light too because you have to prime it, light it, let it heat up, and then light the flame. This stove's best feature is that it is extremely reliable.

Great Tent!

Black Diamond Mega Light 4-Person Shelter

Black Diamond Mega Light 4-Person Shelter

Rating for this product: 4 May 7, 2009

This tent is pretty cool. First of all, it is incredibly light. Just a pole and the top. It is also very quick and easy to set up. I recommend purchasing the floor that goes with it, as it attaches to the top and actually pulls up from the ground, blocking water/bugs from getting in. They also make an adapter that connects 2 trekking poles together so you don't even need to take along the provided pole. This tent is Sweet!!

Spy Soldier Goggles

Spy Soldier Goggles

Rating for this product: 5 May 7, 2009

These are a great pair of goggles. Spy makes an awesome product and this is one of them. In 5 years I spent well over $150 buying a brand new cheap pair of goggles right before every season. I finally realized that was stupid and I bought these goggles. I just finished up with my 3rd season with Spy Soldiers and they are still as good as when I got them. They NEVER fog up, they circulate air very nicely, and hold up well through a face plant (trust me, it hurt). Get these goggles. They may seem a little expensive, but you will save time/money/hassle in the long run. Trust me.

Great Watch, but.....

Highgear Alterra Altimeter Watch

Highgear Alterra Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 3 May 7, 2009

Let me first say that this watch has been a great watch. I have had it for over 3 years now and it has done very well for me. First with the good: The altimeter does a great job, the ski chrono works awesome, the 2 time settings is nice to have, the chrono/lap works great, the compass is a nifty feature, and the barometer does a good job at letting you know when weather is coming in. The bad: the face plate is huge (I get made fun of a lot, but who cares right?), you have to calibrate frequently to keep your altitude correct, this thing eats batteries for breakfast, and worst of all, the construction is not the greatest. I have reattached both metal plates above and below the face plate and the button covers keep coming loose from the sides of the face plate.

I know there was a lot of bad in this review, but this watch has worked great for over 3 years. Overall, I am satisfied with this purchase. Would I buy this specific watch again?? Probably not.

Tecnica Dragon 100 UltraFit Boot - Men's

Tecnica Dragon 100 UltraFit Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 6, 2009

I have put an entire season in this boot and have really enjoyed them. It is actually pretty comfortable, has padding in the right places, and fits my foot nicely. My foot width is average, so it doesn't squeeze too much sideways (I actually have a little more room than I'd like). My only semi-complaint about this boot is that the buckle system isn't the greatest. It seems that Technica wanted to make the buckles look fancy, which I believes takes away from their ease of use. They still work just fine, they just are a little bit harder to get buckled up than a regular buckle. I would NOT let that stop my from buying them though. This is a great boot!!

Osprey Packs Kestrel 38 Backpack - 2200-2300cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2009

I've had this pack for almost 6 months and I absolutely love it. It's compartments are conviently located and the suspension system makes the pack incredibly comfortable. K2 Extreme Alpine Ski

K2 Extreme Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 May 5, 2009

I just got this ski about 1/2 through this season, and have them set up as an all-mountain ski (I'm not into park/pipe). I've put about 10 days on them. Each day had different conditions. I must say that I was impressed with the way these skis handled all conditions. Whether it was hardpack, ice, slush, crud, packed powder, corn, or even a little powder (didn't get to try them out in anything over 6"), these skis did the job. This was my first twin tip and I must say that I really enjoy the ease at which I am now able to ski backwards. I would highly recommend these skis!!

Nalgene Wide Mouth BPA-Free Bottle - 32oz

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2009

These are typical Nalgene bottles. You can't break em, they never leak, and they last forever. I also prefer these specifically because they are made of a bit softer plastic than the typical clear Nalgene bottles. You can still see through the green ones well enough to use the measuring grid on the side. This bottle is DA BOMB!!

Love These Poles!!

LEKI Summit Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

LEKI Summit Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 May 4, 2009

I picked these poles up on SAC a while back. I can't say enough good things about them. First the grips are great. I've used them for all day hikes and haven't had any problems with sore hands. The straps are well-made and easily adjusted. Last, but not least, the shock absorbtion system is pretty sweet. I was a bit leery because I wasn't sure if the pole would absorb too much and create instability. This isn't the case at all. The poles absorb just enough to make for a comfortable pole plant. Needless to say, these poles are great! They have my highest recommendation!
