  • Stomping Grounds:

Anywhere... I'd stomp the moon if it had powder!
  • Bio:

--- Gimme a stick and some snow! ---

I reign in southern Louisiana (Houma, if you've ever heard of it). I grew up skating, so I had a real good background on boards. I progressed pretty decently in snowboarding, and I started convincing my friends to join me up north during the winter months. I'm still learning, obviously, but my love for this sport is only growing.

I take as many trips as possible per season; next season (2009-10) I'm banking on 4 or 5 weeks up north.

I'm moving to Colorado as soon as I get on with an airline (currently in flight school... free flights, anyone?), and I plan on riding until I die.

My only board now is a 2008 Burton Malolo 162, equipped with Burton Missions. I put my Burton Hail's in 'em and stomp pow as much as humanly possible.

I plan on getting a Forum Grudge 156W with some K2 Formulas when I find the cash for it all; then I can feed my need for the park.

Like I said, I'm still a beginner/intermediate, so I'm asking questions by the hundreds. Thanks to all the staff and people of Backcountry for giving me advice every day.

Foursquare Duval Pant - Men's

Foursquare Duval Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 7, 2009

I love these pants. The waterproof rating is spot on; run it under a sink, step in a puddle, anything, and you're dry. The warmth rating is amazing; I'll only have to wear some thermals, if that.

The color is actually my favorite part about the pants. I bought the Blaze Leaf Maze color, and it's BRIGHT! It's pretty much hunter-orange. Perfect, because I wanted some obnoxious pants! Get 'em if you want great pants at a cheap price!

Thanks, BC for the help.

Adequate pack

Burton Day Hiker Backpack - 20L

Burton Day Hiker Backpack - 20L

Rating for this product: 3 July 28, 2009

I bought this pack for sidecountry/resort riding, and it's good enough for the job I give it. I don't require any real avalanche safety in my pack, but I keep spare gloves, goggles, a beanie, some food, a board lock, and an insulated hydration bladder in it. It's held up just fine. It's big and sturdy enough to hold your board for a hike, but small enough to sit on the lift comfortably.

CONS: Mine didn't come with a fleece-lined pocket... bummer. Also, the material isn't the strongest, so I keep it light when packing supplies.

OVERALL: Good enough for occasional side/backcountry, great for resort.

DAKINE Heli Pro 16L Backpack - 1000cu in

July 18, 2009

I've been wanting to pick up a good pack for sidecountry/resort usage, and I've found a 16L in a local sporting goods store much like this one, with a hydration bladder. The only thing is, I'm not positive it's waterproofed well enough, and the bladder doesn't seem to be freeze-proof.

So is it a horrible idea to get a cheaper version of this pack with a bladder that's not freeze-proof? Or should I chuck up the cash for this one that I know will work in all conditions? Thanks guys

K2 WWW Rocker Snowboard

July 15, 2009

It'll be on the smaller side of your spectrum, but it's not like the board just won't work for you. If anything, it may take a bit of getting used to. I've ridden and tested boards within 7-9cm difference, and it just comes down to how you like a stick to operate.

Rossignol Jones Snowboard

June 27, 2009

It will obviously be a good big-mtn board, but because you're on the smaller side, it will be a little harder to handle in groomed or thin conditions. If you really like the board, though, you'll adapt to turning harder, and it will be a more enjoyable ride. I got a board a bit larger than I wanted, but use it for powder more, and turning with every bit of my heart and soul is just an awesome feeling! Lol, good luck man

Burton 2L Gore-Tex Shelter Jacket - Men's

June 22, 2009

If it's a large helmet, you'll have trouble getting it into any hood, unless the jacket is L or bigger. I've worn and tried on several jackets in store and on mtn with a helmet, and most can't fit my large helm.

So if the helmet is a M or S, shouldn't be any worries.

Burton Bullet Snowboard - Wide

I'd go with the 154, or the 157 for a larger board. But you really don't need the wide unless your boots are larger than an 11.5 or 12ish.

Giro 2008 Bad Lieutenant Helmet

Giro 2008 Bad Lieutenant Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 June 18, 2009

The Bad Lieutenant fits really well, keeps your head warm, keeps you safe, and looks good on the mtn. You don't get that "my head is huge" look either. And with an audio option, it gets even better. What more do you want from a helmet? Oh, ventilation... That's a negative. Oh well, if your head sweats, take it off. Works fine for me! Good overall, get one.

This one is pretty good for a low profile helmet. It's one of the smaller ones out there; I was really close to buying this one before switching to the Giro Bad Lieutenant, just because it was cheaper.

Basically, it won't make you look like you have a mushroom head.

I always size up in jackets, for comfort and mobility. Whether you have one or four layers, I'd rather a looser jacket than not being able to move my arms as much. It's really a matter of opinion. A small will fit, but yes, you may be restricted a bit when layering.

Burton Clash Snowboard

It depends on how much powder you plan on riding in contrast to park riding. This board will be good for a developing park rider, but if you're more all-mountain oriented, or more powder specific, this board won't cut it where you're going.

Either way, if you want powder, a longer board will be better; the 155's a good idea. As far as this board's performance in the powder... that may be shaky.

Burton Vapor Snowboard

April 23, 2009

Lemme say first off that I haven't ridden any of the three sticks you mentioned, but since you wanted all opinions, perhaps I can drop a bit of insight.

I won't tell you one way or the other, because I'm not qualified to do so, but after reading reviews on four different sites, I think I can help, at least a little. With what I've read, I have yet to find any review that can substantially knock the T6 on any bad aspect. Also, and I'm sure you've read it, an answer on the T6 page says he bought a Vapor and wishes he still at a T6.

As far as the Custom X goes, Custom's have been around long enough to deserve some respect, too. With the ICS system, you know it'll be more responsive...

Again, I'm not telling you which one to pick, but from a fellow boarder to another, I like your options. I'd give up food for a month for any of these three; personally, I've been peeping the Custom X for a while as well.

Good luck with your decision, Cyrus! Also, kudos for stepping up the all-mtn free ride! And hey, how's Timberline in the summer? Does Mt. Hood drop some good snow in June? I'm dying for a summer trip.

If you're sized as a L, but you usually wear XL's, it's kind of a toss-up. While the L might be snug enough, you may be on the verge of an XL. The XL could allow room for warmers, if you should choose to put 'em in there, but may be loose.

I'd say L if you're gonna be using your hands a whole lot (which I have to imagine is the case). A tighter fit will definitely be easier to maneuver.

I got these on sale last year and used them in all conditions (bright light, dim light, real blizzards, fake snow-making). They held up to everything well, and would rarely fog up.

The only cons I found are in dim lighting, when colors and shadows are really hard to make out; night boarding with these is pretty perilous.

First board

Burton Malolo Snowboard

Burton Malolo Snowboard

Rating for this product: 5 April 1, 2009

The 2008 Malolo 162 was my first board, and having only rode rentals before it, I was obviously amazed. It performed great; I first rode North Carolina with it. We had decent conditions the first few days, a little ice here and there, but the Malolo actually handled well even on the ice! It surprised me a lot. I could race down the mtn, blowing past my buddies and spinning with ease. The last couple of days there, we caught 10" of powder. I didn't think the board could handle any better, but when I got first tracks in deep pow between trees, it felt like I could die happily.

Overall, the board handles well, turns and spins easily, and runs smooth and fast. No jitters for me; all fun on the mtn. Get one!

These are my first bindings; they're great, but I can see some minor flaws already. The clip on the toe strap came loose on me and actually broke free on a run. I thought it was a freak accident, then the opposite foot's toe strap started sticking.
On another note, the bindings handle well. Turning is easy, and when the straps are holding tight, they keep great control. Get them if you don't have the money for higher priced bindings. They won't let you down... if you keep a screw driver in your jacket.

Awesome boots. I got these 2 months before my first trip of the season. I wore them a few times (maybe 3 or 4) around the house to get my feet used to them, but they actually fit great the first time I tried them on! When I got to the mountain and strapped in, they definitely performed! Held tight to my feet, didn't hurt at any point, and stayed warm all day and night. Get 'em while they're hot!

How does this board handle rails in the park? Too stiff, too much flex or what? Anyone with experience on that?
Also, I'm 6' 185, 12 boot. Is 158 the best, or can I downsize to 156W if I find a better price? Thanks much.

Would this be the best or one of the best boards for all-mtn freestyle? I own a powder board (Burton Malolo), but I've been dying to get into the park, while still not giving up all-mtn ability. So basically, does this board have it all? Thanks
