Oakley Beret Insulated Pant - Women's

October 24, 2010

My wife has an Oakley Parade Down Jacket - are these pants compatible with the skirt/gator on that jacket? That is, will they snap or zip together? Any other Oakley pants that will do the same?

Great for the price, but...

Princeton Tec Scout Headlamp

Princeton Tec Scout Headlamp

Rating for this product: 3 September 29, 2010

I bought this right before needing to changing out the clutch on my car - worked great for upclose wrenching, etc. The batteries have lasted almost 8 months of sporadic use. On the down side when walking at night the light casts a aura or something that just catches my peripheral vision and throws me off - sorry, its hard to explain. The other thing I'm not big on is the location/feel of the button. Sometimes I need to even take it off to find the button. Never read the instructions so I don't know about the different light levels, although I once accidentally switched on one of the flash modes.

ALPS Mountaineering Clearwater Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

ALPS Mountaineering Clearwater Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 4 September 13, 2010

I first bought myself one and then two more for my 9yo and 6yo boys for camping and an annual backpacking trip. They pack really well, are very comfortable, high quality, and a steal if you buy on sac ($45ish). I agree that 20 degrees is probably not doable - I had it down to 30ish and was a little cold even with a full layer of clothes. I picked up a liner but haven't needed it yet this year. I had the same zipper issue someone else mentioned, but figured out if you keep tension on the zipper pull away from the bag as you zip up or down it works pretty well.

Nice and warm

ExOfficio CoreTech Fleece Jacket - Men's

ExOfficio CoreTech Fleece Jacket - Men's

Very nice if you get at a sale price - mine was from SAC for $40. Wind resistant and seems to be cut for layering. Some nice touches like the inside pockets and waste cinch. Runs a little big - most times a medium fits me pretty well (5'6" and 145 - I like things a little loose) but a small probably would better for me - I can live with the medium I bought.

I've had this stove for about a year and used it on about 4 backpacking trips. It does boil water quickly and the electric spark is a nice feature. I also like the built in wind guard. I didn't notice this til packing up on my last trip but the pot will hold a can of fuel when in your pack. The included case is nice, but on my next trip I'm going to see if I can use a rubber band or something to hold everything together and save a little weight. Picked mine up on SAC for under $60

Great for sleeping in

Eureka Autumn Wind 2XD Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Eureka Autumn Wind 2XD Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 June 29, 2009

Sets up quickly and with the rain fly secured is very stable. I like the large main door shape and location - worked well for accessing the pack in the vestibule. With the mesh door I was able to do little star gazing and have the fly on while keeping the bugs out. The stuff bag is extra roomy so you don't need to roll everything up super tight to get it in. I strapped mine to the bottom of my pack so a little extra bulk didn't matter. It might be a little heavy to some people but it is probably average. A little small for two adults and since it slopes and narrows in the back you MAY not want to use it if you both will be doing a lot of sitting up and spending time in it during the day. I didn't try out the side door so I can't comment on it merits.

Very nice

Vasque Breeze Low Day Hiking Shoe - Men's

Vasque Breeze Low Day Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 29, 2009

My first foot ware specific to backpacking and am really glad I made the move. These were very comfortable right out of the box with no break in required. Good cushioning and true to size - my feet run a little wide and these fit just fine. But the biggest plus is the grip of the sole. No slipping on the granite I hiked on most recently - even when near verticle. 4 stars due to a little fraying of some of the mesh before I had a couple of miles on them.
