The North Face Scree Gaiter II

The North Face Scree Gaiter II

Rating for this product: 4 July 16, 2004

I bought these to use with my Montrail Hardrocks. Montrail does not make a generic gaiter and these seemed minimalist compared to the others I checked out. I wear a 9.5 HR and ordered the medium scree gaiter. The HR lacks attachment points, except for the back, so a little problem-solving made them work. The front attaches easily to your laces. The back clip can be folded under. For the side clips, I used a length of elastic chord, knotted some loops, and lached it under the shoe arch. The first go out, everything was great, except that it felt like a sharp noose on my ankle (I wear low cut socks). This I remedied my sewing a neoprene collar onto them. I have run four times since, between 5 and 15 mile runs, and they have worked flawlessly -- not a grain of sand. I think using the medium size is a crucial factor, because they stretch and grab the shoe reasonably well even without being lashed down. Laces are easily tucked up under and shouldn't present a problem. Overall, with a little tinkering and ensuring a snug fit by proper sizing (opt smaller), I can't see why these wouldn't be an asset. Better ankle comfort and they'd get 5 stars.

Best worn on feet.

Montrail Hardrock Trail Running Shoe - Mens

Montrail Hardrock Trail Running Shoe - Mens

Rating for this product: 5 July 8, 2004

Before buying these I tried on the Vasque Velocity. They felt like moon boots. But the Hardrocks fit snug, were super light, and had zero excess materials. I wore a pair of Leona Divides into smush, and in comparison the Hardrock is trimmer with a narrower toe box. Whereas I wore fat Thorlos with the LDs, the HR fits fine with a thinner sock. Zero blisters. Squishy comfort. Heel stays put. Tip-top performance on rugged trails (Tantalus on O'ahu); except for broad, slimy rock faces and wet roots on which it can slide out (but probably every trail shoe would). The tongue slides over on one foot (though to no effect), unlike the LD which is sewn to the base. Just enough laces. A waterproof version of the HR would be supreme. To improve, I imagine next years version will induce levitation. Order a half size bigger than your street shoes. And where are generic Montrail gaiters?
