Patagonia Simple Guide Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 23, 2012

Are the specs listed here on BC.com correct? I ask because the weight is listed here as 12.9oz (and yes I read the question and answer below), but on the patagonia website it is listed at 17.4oz (using 6.2oz fabric). Here is the link to patagonia website:

http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/patagonia-mens-simple-guide-jacket?p=83746-0-889

I am very interested in this jacket at 13oz, but not really much at all if it is 17oz. I am in need of a light stretch woven softshell without a hood (I hate them). If anyone has any ideas on that I would love to hear them too! Thanks for the help!!

Half-gloves?? Does this jacket have the same half-gloves as the non-hooded version? If not, does it have thumb-holes at all, or is it a normal cuff.

Thanks!!!

Mountain Hardwear Effusion Power Jacket - Men's

December 28, 2011

Question about the material. Here on bc.com the material is listed as DryQ Active, but on the MH website it is listed as "AirShield Active," not the DryQ Active; however, DryQ Active IS listed as a technology for this piece on the MH site. My question is this: what material is used in this jacket (as least the front facing material)? And if it is AirShield Active, how does that material compare with the DryQ Active?

Thank you for the help!!

Backcountry.com Titanium Cookset - 1650ml

December 19, 2011

I told myself after being burned the last time that I would never buy a pot/pan with these thin, folding handles again. However, I am looking at this set up for use when my jet boil with companion cup is not enough. My question is this: how easy are the handles to use when it is cold with cold stiff hands or while wearing gloves?

As a side note has anyone gone from using Aluminum to Titanium and noticed a difference in fuel usage? The Titanium should not transfer heat as efficiently as the Aluminum, and I was wondering if that translated into increased fuel usage or if it is not noticeable.

Thanks in advance!!!

Mountain Hardwear Powerstretch Softshell Jacket - Men's

December 15, 2011

The R1 hoody is made out of polartec powder DRY; whereas, this jacket is made from polartec power STRETCH. Power stretch is more expensive, much warmer, and has (hence the name) more stretch. There are a few types of power stretch out there, and it is very difficult to know what type is being used on a particular piece. This jacket is saying that has the "hardface" technology, which means that it is going to offer some added wind resistance for use as outer wear. So, if you are looking for a jacket to use as a warm softshell, this would be a better choice then the R1. The R1 would work better as a not as warm base layer. On a side note, REI uses polartec powerdry in their base layers at a FRACTION of what Patagonia charges.

Hope this helps!

Arc'teryx Delta LT Pullover Fleece Jacket - Men's

March 10, 2011

The main difference is in the material. The LT uses Polartec Classic 100 Micro, where, the R1 uses Polartec Power Dry. The power dry is heavier (about 2.5 oz for the R1 pullover), but should wick moisture better and would be warmer. If it makes a difference, the R1 also has a chest pocket. The price is about the same, so go with works best for you. Hope that helped!

Mountain Hardwear Onata Softshell Jacket - Men's

March 5, 2011

This question is for Jon Webb. Since you seem to be the "go-to" guy on everything Mountain Hardwear.

I have the Mountain Hardwear Chockstone Jacket; which I love. However, I hate the hood (I hate most hoods, not just the one on the Chockstone). I just ran across this jacket and see that it seems to be the same material (chockstone doubleweave) as my Chockstone Jacket, without the hood. I figured that by losing the hood, I would also lose some weight as well. But this jacket weighs more then the Chockstone Jacket with the hood. So, does this jacket have a thicker lining (i.e. warmer) which would be fine, or is it something else?

Any information you have would be great.

And, as a side note, the tech answers that you give are extremely informative. Thank you!

Stoic Microlith Softshell Pant - Men's

March 2, 2011

No problem! I was wondering what the weight on these were too. You might also check out the rab treklite softshell pants (http://www.backcountry.com/rab-treklite-soft-shell-pant-mens), or the mountain hardware chockstone pants (http://www.backcountry.com/mountain-hardwear-chockstone-pant-mens). Both are on sale right now too. I have to chockstone jacket and it is very abrasion resistant, and very, very thin. Not much in the warmth department. Good luck!

Stoic Microlith Softshell Pant - Men's

March 1, 2011

I just got off of the live chat, and was told that these pants weigh: "0.82 lbs, about 13 oz." I just thought I would share. As for comparison to the scree, the scree pants weigh 17oz (http://marmot.com/products/scree_pant) with more pockets, so it would seem the microlith pants are a bit thinner and not as warm.

Ibex Woolies Bottom - Men's

Icebreaker Body Fit 150 vs. These

Does anyone have any kind of idea how these compare to the Icebreaker Body Fit 150?? I think that the Icebreakers are a little lighter, but I have no idea on the durability of either one. I am looking for my first pair of wool base layers, and these two are at the top of my list. With them both being priced at $60 right now, I wanted to see if anyone out there could give me some ideas on which way to go.

Thanks for your help!!

Stoic Vamp 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

December 23, 2010

Does anyone know what size a compression sack would be need for this bag? I was looking at the sea to summit event dry bag (this one: http://www.backcountry.com/sea-to-summit-evac-dry-sack) in the 5L size and I am wondering if that will be big enough. Granite Gear makes a dry bag (http://www.granitegearstore.com/eVent-Sil-Drysacks-P110.aspx#) like it but much lighter. The problem is that the smallest size is a 7L. Anyone have any ideas on a stuff sack size???

This thing is amazing!!

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Vest - Men's

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 23, 2010

I just got my order in and could not wait to try it out in some wind. It is my first windstopper item, and I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype...YES!! It just so happened that here in sunny southern California, this week has been not so sunny. I wore this vest in 40mph winds and was amazed at its ability to keep my core warm. It feels lighter then 11 oz (although I know my XXL is heaver). It is very light functional piece of gear that will be a part of my layering system for a long time.
As for the fit, it has a long enough torso for me, which means it may be too long for some of you (in backpacks I measure a 21.5"). Mountain Hardwear sizes always seem to fit me very well and this one is no different. It fit perfect with a layer under it, and then a XXL Cohesion over it.

I have used this for a while now

Mountain Hardwear Cohesion Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Cohesion Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 23, 2010

I first want to say that I really like this hardshell. I have had it for almost a year now, and it has served me very well. Its waterproofness has been excellent. I have have been in some serious storms (and a two hour ocean fishing boat trip where spray landed on me the entire time), and have not had any leaks at all.
Breathability could be better...but really can't it always? I over heated the jacket in about an hour of hard up hill hiking with a light pack. The pit-zips on this are a life saver though. I almost always have them unzipped.
The fit on me is perfect. The xxl fits perfect over the xxl windstopper tech vest I just got. The torso length is long enough for me to just about cover my butt (like a rain shell should). I have a very long torso though, so it may be too long for some of you.
At some point in the future I will move on to the marmot mica jacket though....got to go lighter!!

A Great Pack....If You Use it Right

Granite Gear Vapor Trail Backpack - 3300-3900cu in

Granite Gear Vapor Trail Backpack - 3300-3900cu in

Rating for this product: 4 January 23, 2010

I bought this pack after doing serious research on many, many packs. It is very light, and quite comfortable to carry. The construction of the pack is top notch.
My problem is this: this was to be my one and only pack for quite a while to come. I realized it would not work for me on an 18 mile one day mountain hike. I need more room then my ultra-light 18L pack, but way less room then this pack (or a pack with better clinching and far more organization options; like the osprey exos 58). I had serious, "hey, where did that bagel go??" issues. With only one huge pocket, everything got lost quickly. That being said, in the future I may get this again as a longer trip backpack, where less little stuff will get lost inside.
All said and done and very well made, light, and comfortable pack, just not what I need right now.
