Asolo Power Matic 200 GV Backpacking Boot - Men's

Asolo Power Matic 200 GV Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 2, 2009

Boots are put together very well. I have taken them over some very rough and rugged terrain. The bottoms of my feet have never hurt by the end of the day even on the 6 and 7 day trips. Feet stay very dry and warm. My only complaint is that they seem to take quite a bit of time to break in. This is one of the only boots I've owned that I actually got a blister while wearing even after logging over 300 miles on them. My dad owned the same pair and ended up taking them back after deciding that he would never be able to break them in even after several trips over about 15 months. All in all a very well made boot that performs at a high level just not quite as comfortable as a few others I've owned.

Gamma can't touch this

Mountain Hardwear Dragon Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Dragon Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 2, 2009

I've owned/own quite a few softshells over the years and rarerly leave the house without one, even in the summer I have a jacket in the back of my car or trunk as a just in case. The Dragon Jacket surpasses everything else on the market in its class of windproof water resistant jackets. It is much warmer then the gamma mx while remaining lighter. The material itself is quite a bit sturdier as well. It has an mp3 pocket on the interior of the jacket and best of all pit zips, which makes it much more versatile in a wider range of temperatures and activities. I still can't understand how arcteryx can offer such an inferior product at almost half the cost.

Missing a few key features

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 2, 2009

So the pros first. The material used is very flexible or "stretchy" the helmet compatible hood is very nice as it works very well with or without a helmet at retaining body heat. The jacket is also pretty warm for its weight. Like all high quality softshells is windproof and highly water resitant. Cons are price for the features its missing an interior pocket for the mp3 player it is to heavy for high aerobic cool weather activities making it only useful if it is colder out. What is most baffling about this shell is the lack of pit zips for almost $400 dollars making the jacket almost completley useless for anything really high aerobic. If you want a jacket that does it all go with the mtn hardware dragon.

Best socks in my drawer

Darn Tough Merino Wool Micro Crew Cushion Hiking Sock

Darn Tough Merino Wool Micro Crew Cushion Hiking Sock

Rating for this product: 5 March 2, 2009

Great weight to warmth ratio, they breath well and are very durable. I've had them for about a year now and they show almost no wear despite being the first socks I reach for when I'm in need of merino wool socks. I own quite a few smart wools and quite a few of cabelas merino wool socks. Now if they would only make this sock in a crew sock or something that came to just above my boot tops, which is the reason I own the cabelas socks.
